Plant labels from milk jugs: thumbs down
Comments (29)Sharpies definitely don't hold up here in VA, even on the white plastic from cat litter or bleach jugs. The people who are praising them are also saying that they bury the tag, or turn it to face the ground. Grease pencil is most long-lasting, as long as you use black - blue (therefore green as well) and red are VERY fade-prone. It's true that the bleach-jug plastic is itself less degraded by sunlight than the milk jugs....See MoreContainer Markers that work, and ones that don't
Comments (36)For my perennials in the garden, I use labels made with a Brother label maker and stick them on 6-7" pieces of metal mini blind, which I cut with my DH's aviation snips so they are pointed on one end. They're not perfect, but they last several years and are easy to read. For my small pots and seed trays, I use a Sharpie marker and those purchased white plant markers that another poster recommended, the kind that come in strips. I'll have to look around here for the kind of marking pen someone called "Sharps-A-Lot". I would try Lee Vallley but there is none in my city. Maybe I'll look for paint pens too. Are they sold in a craft store or in the paint section of a hardware store? P.S. I got the suggestion of a Brother label maker from the Daylily Forum....See MoreBest Plant Markers Ever!!!
Comments (31)I went to Walmart the other day and found that they have permanent silver and gold paint markers. They work good and I think they will not fade since it is paint but they do take quite a few minutes to dry and are hard for me to see on a white background. Wish I could find the same type of paint markers in black. My WM has black paint markers in various widths -- and lots of other colors too. They're in the Craft section; the brand is Elmer's. Try Michael's, JoAnn, Hobby Lobby, and other specialty craft stores as well: they're likely to have better quality paint markers than WM....See MoreConsiderations for families with small children
Comments (36)Great post! We are in a similar situation. We have a two year old and four year old and plan to have one more child. We plan for this to be our house until our kids head off to college so we had many of the same concerns in planning. After initially planning all the bedrooms upstairs, we changed to a story and a half plan. We have the master downstairs, with one other bedroom (future nursery). We have two bedrooms upstairs for our boys with a bathroom and enclosed loft (this forum scared me too much about an open loft area!). The upstairs loft will function as a play/homework space for the boys in the future. If we wanted to have all three kids upstairs, we could close it off to make it a third bedroom if we wanted. Our plan is open concept with a playroom off of our great room, which will also function as a den/guest room as the kids get older. It has sliding barn doors that can keep it open to the great room or it can also be closed off (to hide all those toys!). We included a large mudroom off the garage with five lockers/cubbies. We also have a drop zone/desk between that area and the kitchen for keeping school papers, mail, etc. organized. We've opted for hardwood throughout the great room/kitchen/dining. Our builder is doing some distressing to it with the staining process so hopefully any additional wear and tear by our boys and golden retriever will only add to the look....See Morealyson_2008
