In hopes of all these new plants - Plant markers?
Comments (9)I've tried almost everything, from pricey copper stake-type markers to Target "dollar stop" tin markers...in the end, I prefer white mini blinds with Sharpie/paint pen for writing. They're cheap (a single $4 blind from WalMart can yield hundreds of markers!), widely available, easy to spot in the dirt...when you're marking hundreds of jugs/bottles/transplants, this is the thriftiest way. I cut the top ends of mine with "Victorian" scrapbooking scissors, just to make them a bit fancy :-) Karen makes a good point, the mini-blind strips are a bit harder to force into clay soil...so in the one area of my yard where this is an issue, I force a small weeder into the ground where I intend to place the marker, to help things along. Comments (14)I buy cheap vinyl blinds at BIG LOTS. The 36" seem to be the best value. Then I cut them into 7+ inch lengths. I use a black china marker to write names on topside. It is nice and black and stays for about 5 years. I use a soft lead artist pencil to write name on bottom. It will last as long as the marker, just not as visible. Some bury a small plastic tag below ground level in front of clump. I don't but I think it's a good idea. Maps are good too, just lots of up-keep. Ed...See MoreBest place to order plant markers???
Comments (6)I get mine from paw paw too. The free shipping is awesome, as they are heavy. I use a brother labler to attach labels, but I also write the name of the cultivar in pencil on the back. The sun can't fade it there and that way I'm covered even if the brother label fades. Get more than you think you will need. The price is better with the larger quanities and you will need them, because all the pics everyone posts on this forum will certainly entice you to keep adding new faces to your garden. I love using the blinds for seedlings and divisions that I'm giving away too. Avoid using the "permanent marker" pens. They fade out in less than a season in full sun. Patty is right, pencil is the way to go on these types of markers. Happy Gardening, Kim...See MoreBest type of red ever-bearing raspberry plant for Long Island, NY?
Comments (20)If you pinch the tips they will branch and be bushy but as the canes get older the thorns get worse. They can get thick so picking berries can be like a dangerous easter egg hunt.... sometimes you get too eager going for the fruit and get a sharp stab. I currently have them in those blue water barrels cut in half. The ones cut length-ways are in wood frames to keep from tipping over and sit on cement patio fruiting for 2yrs+. Another barrel I cut width-ways so about 17in deep 24 wide also survive winter snow on cement patio. Just make sure something blocks the wind. I know it can get brutal especially further out Long Island, that can cause tip burn or if you're closer to shore you may have a bit of salt in it so you can cover canes with tarp but you need rain and snow to get to soil during winter so mulch or frost blanket over ground at bottom....See Moreseysonn
