miele vs gaggenau induction cooktop

Any opinions as to which is the better cooktop? Because of Miele fixed pricing and dealer flexibility with pricing the Gaggenau, I can get either of them for about the same price. I know they each have their fans.

Hi! I saw your msg on the kithens forum and popped over here to give you my experience with the Miele cooktop.
I honestly didn't look at other lines because I went with the single induction cooktop as an afterthought. I had already ordered a 48"gas range and as I got closer to finalizing my plans, I just got nervous about my kids using a gas appliance. Since my island is so big, I carved out a spot on it for a single burner induction cooktop and Miele had one that was the perfect size.
I really love it! I have been able to use any reasonable priced cookware(Marshalls, Target, TJMaxx) and it works great. I use it more than my gas range because it is so easy to clean and also because it faces the room instead of the wall. Good Luck.

Thanks Michellemarie. Miele has a promotion on here at the moment, so I have to decide by the end of the week. I know they make good quality appliances.

In Austrailia warenty was only 1 year bought 2013 just under 12,000 AUD dollars it never works latest quote to reapair 1600 dollars , over the past year I spent 3160 on diferent reapairs down time nearly 7 months ( lucky I had my $200 plug in fryer ) I'm going to throw my gaggenau cooktop it in the trash & buy a new cook top defenetly not gaggenau . I do have the oven & the steamer they do look good , but for a functioning kichen , a kichen that prepares meals for a family gaggenau is not the product no matter how healthy one is one still what's its products to work

We are planning to replace our under counter Miele oven and solid plate cooktop. We want to use an induction cooktop with an under-counter oven. We have a granite counter and a 24" nominal width cooktop, so we can only practically fit a 24" wide replacement induction cooktop. We are looking at a 3 burner Diva DDP3 and a new 3 burner Miele KM5947(supposed to be available in Canada early next year). Any advice on choosing between these two would be appreciated. We don't know the price of the Miele but suspect it may be more expensive than the Diva. For the oven, we are looking at the straight convection Miele H4682B or the Gaggenau BO250/251. We know that the Gaggenau is more expensive but it does come with a standard 5 year warranty. We would have liked to consider the Gaggenau steam oven but the complications of providing water supplies and drains in an existing condominium and the fact that it is an under counter installation has discouraged us. Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated.

trove: My Miele odor comment was intended as a zinger directed at Miele due to various complaints on this forum about dishwasher odor (probably not confined just to Miele). Some who have looked into this in depth have recently blamed it on humidity acting on microscopic food particles not flushed by the dishwashing process, and on dirty liquid in the dishwasher plumbing left over after operation. I know I have had odor problems at times with my Optima, but due to onset of winter have to wait until summer to try to verify whether either cause of blame is consistent with my observations. Miele has to conform to European laws relating to energy efficiency, and this also affects water usage. It may be that old style American dishwashers remained more sanitary in humid conditions after their drying cycle. I don't recall odor from childhood dishwashers, but I think my family's dishwasher was run more often than my Miele. kas

You may have run into the CYA factor. Normally, to get approval from such as UL, various tests have to be run. A stand-alone unit only needs to be tested by itself, but if a manufacturer wants to approve combinations, then they have to show that the combinations are safe. No manufacturer is likely to expend the effort proving competitors products will work with their unit. Hence, if a Miele oven is approved to go under a Miele cooktop, it is because they determined its safety. One expects similarity of process for Gagganau units. (In that case, sibling products such as Thermador and Bosch may be approved.) Beyond safety, there are also lifetime reliability issues that relate mainly to heat. In fairness to the cooktop manufacturers, they have no control over how other manufacturers ovens are thermally insulated or even if the insulation on units made today is the same as on units made yesterday. There would have to be an industry-wide standardization agreement. (Waiting for you, ANSI.) In my view, if room permitted, meeting the gap requirement for an underneath air space, below which there was added and effective insulation above the desired wall oven, might be safe for both units. (One needs to know how the induction unit actually cools itself to decide whether any particular gap is going to be sufficient. Gap access to external air may be needed, possibly forced air.) The enemy of electronics is heat, and other than the ceram top, electronics is what constitutes most of an induction cooktop. kas

Miele has a promotion going? I was just at a dealer today looking at their induction cooktops but didn't see or hear of any promotions?

Hi Carolml,

For what it is worth, I suggest searching for reviews in this forum. Just google gardenweb appliances induction miele Gaggenau and you will get a ton of reviews. Especially from induction experts like Plllog (user name). Only suggestion I would offer is to try and actually cook something at a demo location.. Preferably the same dish with pans you like to use. I was all set on Miele but when I actually tried it, I decided to go with Gaggenau as I found the controls more intuitive and more fine grained (increase heat just a tad) than Miele. If the prices are same, I would ask that you try to do this before you make a call.

lalitha - thank you, that is exactly the kind of thing I want to know. I have to travel by ferry to Vancouver to actually see a Gaggenau. The miele can be seen locally but I don't like the way it looks quite as much. I have tried a few gardenweb searches but didn't have much luck. I'll try again. I will call before I go to Vancouver and see if anyone actually has an operating gaggenau. The promo ends Sunday, so I've got to decide. Have you loved your gaggenau? any complaints?

manifestkitchen - I think the promo may just be in Canada. Esentially, it is free 10 year warranty if you buy the base priced appliance. Here we have a funny three tier price system based on the years of warranty. Mind you, the prices are way higher than in the US anyway. Don't know how they get away with that, maybe we are just to polite to complain.

You might look in to how you'll get these brands serviced, just in case... Will you have to ride the ferry over to Vancouver to get service, if you get the Gaggenau?

chac_mool - We bought our gaggenau ovens here, so hopefully there is a service place. Its just that the appliance stores are small and the market smaller still. I will check though!
lalitha - I googled as you suggested and found lots of info. I've always used the gardenweb search engine before - google worked way better. Thanks.

Please let me know if anyone is interested in some new, closed box Gaggenau and/or Subzero appliances. Someone stiffed us, and the appliances are with an extremely reputable, high end kitchen cabinet company in their storage.

The manufacturer warranties are still effective. We are negotiable on the price, and these appliances are never discounted or go on sale.
