A little OT..A trip to the Dollar Store

I don't have any Dollar Stores near me, so on when DH and I went "clubbing" yesterday, I asked he pull in to one we were passing, on the pretense of finding fish nets for the gkids. Of course, anything for them, LOL. He had never been to one before, so was very cynical..well we spent 55 dollars, on cwap! Some recorders for the gkids to use at THEIR house, coloring books, drain strainers, etc. and I snuck in 2 square white plates, and 2 provencial looking ones, like Pfaltz has, green with mustardy gold etc.

Found my Poppies Pierrogi which I have been looking for..so all in all I think I will get him to stop when we are near one.

Kathleen, Those "dollars" sure add up even in a dollar store. ;~) I love your plates. Very pretty colors.

Oh, I really like the color and the design on your plates. Sandi is right, those dollars still add up quickly--but I am so glad you found some pretty dishes. Doesn't it make setting the table more fun when you have some variety? Luvs

Thanks, Everyone. Its such fun to share with all of you! Jeanne, afraid the phone has to stay there, LOL. Don't worry about bunny falling off tho, he's held on tight with sticky stuff. Tho I'll be removing him soon since he's not exactly Fall or Christmas looking. And those witch boots definitely AREN'T made for walking... LOL. They are resin or ceramic, and together as one piece. I don't know what's going on with my photos tonight. I resized everything properly in Photobucket, but only some of the pictures came out right in my posts. Weird. Anyway, sorry for the BIG ones as I know its tough on the dial-up folks. Looking at the turkey candle-holder, I'm think I need to do a bit of cosmetic work on his eyes. He looks pretty mad to me. The big turkey is resin, but sure looks like wood which I like a lot. Pheasant too. Their painting has a "grain" look to it like wood. OA, the orange balls sound neat to decorate with. I've not seen any either. Tho I didn't look in that area of Hobby Lobby yesterday. I made myself stay away from Christmas ornaments this time. LOL. hugs, Karen

I'm glad you had such a good shopping trip. Looking forward to seeing the haul. As soon as the dish Nazi I live with turns his back, I'll get pics and post them. He's starting to get a little suspicious of the " that old thing.. I've had that forever" line :>) lol -- I got busted this morning. DH (also known as the Dish Police) just noticed something I put up last week. "Where did that come from? I've never seen it before." He knows UPS delivered some stuff last week, so I confessed. He just laughed. He also finally noticed that there were *two* lamps just alike in different rooms. He thought that I had just been moving one from room to room. lol Lee

Redcurls, copyright laws are complicated and I understand the apprehension, but one is allowed to quote from a published piece of work in order to discuss it. A work cannot be copied in its entirety. BTW paraphrasing can still be copyright infringment if the entire work was paraphrased. I know of two cases where an entire work was paraphrased. Anton LeVey's best selling and only book, has been proven to have been lifted and paraphrased from an obscure 1880's published book. I read in the news about a Valedictorian who was stripped of the title when it was discovered that an essay he had 'written' had been lifted and paraphrased from The Onion newspaper. Although neither of these cases were prosecuted under copyright laws, it is written into copyright laws that paraphrasing a work and selling it, can be prosecuted. One of the things that defined with copyright laws is if the person made money off of the copying of the work and distibutring it OR, did they copy and distribute the work with malice, to short the sale of said work. The profit angle is often part of copyright prosecution. For instance if you created a website as a fan club for your favorite rock star and put of photos to admire, it would probably not be prosecuted unless you started charging a membership to join or made money off of it in some other way, like by selling advertising space on the site or asking for "donations". This is how Wikipedia got into trouble, and has now removed all photos that had been put up that are not in public domain. Generally if one has inedvertantly broken copyright law the owner of the material will send a cease and desist letter. If there is compliance there will not usually be any prosecution. Court battles are expensive and are wished to be avoided by both parties.

The gingerbread man does look happy -- that you can't catch me written all over his face. ;-) I think it is fun and proves you don't have to get elaborate to have a tree with color, lights and sparkle and that whimsy can be a nice change of pace. Your candy canes are plastic, but the year I used a lot of candy canes, I took them all to our pediatrician's office and they handed them out instead of lollipops while they lasted -- in case anyone else considered the idea but doesn't know what to do with all those candy canes.

Well, no one would look at those and think, "Dollar Store."

You'll certainly get some satisfaction about that when folks come to your house and ooh-and-ahh over your unique dishes.

I love the Dollar Store and we have one about 2 minutes from my house and I am a regular customer. Of course with 3 Great Nieces, and ya know I have to send them a box of stuff every month or so!!

Deals is another very good place to shop for bargains!! But the closest Deals is about 30 minutes from my home and not near my weekly errand route.

Hi Michelle, glad to have you joining us. I've never heard of Deals either, tell us more about them. All I have here is Dollar Tree and 99 cent stores, and I've seen a Dollar Plus but haven't checked it out yet.

Hope you will keep joining in here, it gets a little slow between holidays, but we all enjoy chatting with each other.

I can't seem to find a web site for Deal$-Nothing over a Dollar Stores. But I did find an article saying that the Dollar Store bought out Deal$ in March. Deal$ stores will still operate under the name Deal$.

Deal$ is basically like the Dollar Store but they carry higher end merchandise and far more food items too. But this was before the Dollar Store bought them out.

Judith, dh was amazed how much we spent on c-ap!
My friend went to Christmas tree shops over the weekend, and called me from the store, She had gone upstate, neat Tam, (have you heard from her??) to visit an aunt, and I made her promise to go. I gave her a short list..She is coming back Wed. I hope I find my camera card which I lost,,or I will have to buy a new one!!!I want to take pics of the goodies!

kathleen, yes we want pictures. I justify the dollar store purchases like this....sometimes I go in there and get nothing...sometimes I go in there and spend...lots........
I feel it evens things out. LOL (sounded good to me..)

Great philosophy! I have now added 4 white square plates to my collection from the dollar store. The best news for me is they are going to open a Christmas Tree shop 45 min from here...I hope before Cmas!

kathleen, you lucky duck, we don't have a Christmas Tree shop here. Just a Christmas Mouse, which is expensive and "not all that".
White plates are great, they go with everything! My dollar store did not get anything like that in. Bummer..
