vacuum advice?

We desperately need a new vacuum. we have 2 sets of stairs & our house is about 3400 sq ft. Weight is our biggest priority b/c I have a history of low back issues & w/ our current approx 16 lb Bissell (which has little to no suction left anyway), I end up in back pain after only doing one floor and my husband also hates vacuuming b/c of the weight of the vacuum & having to lug it up & down the stairs. So I researched a few of the seemingly more popular & better vacuums and here is what I came up with. Does anyone have a recommendation based on our house & our issues? Our entire upstairs is carpet and our downstairs is about 2/3 hardwood.

so here are the pros of each for me, which do you think might be the best choice?

dyson- 15 lbs but have heard great things about cleaning power & the slim has a long hose (I think?) that you could use to do the stairs so you don't have to carry it up & down. filters are lifetime & no bag. 5 yr warrantee.

oreck- only weighs 8 or 9 pounds! but need to change filters & bags & i think is the most expensive of the 3. 5 yr warrantee

hoover windtunnel- not sure about weight (i saw something that said over 20 lbs, is this correct?), bagless w/ lifetime filter. not sure about warrantee.

Don't get a Hoover Windtunnel. Mine had very poor suction, even though I had it completely repaired/overhauled twice. I currently have a Bissell which I'm not really fond of . It is quite heavy and I hate lugging it up and down stairs. I have a three story home.

I second the Windtunnel. Mine broke twice, once under warranty and then a few months later. When I went to buy a new vacuum there were quite a few of them there waiting for repair.
I would suggest checking the March '07 issue of Consumer Reports which you should be able to get at your local library. They did a review of the best vacuums and their pros & cons. I was considering the Dyson Animal but CR rated a Kenmore as better at picking up pet hair!

Back years ago, I think in this forum, several members were interested in building vacuums specific to cleaning fish ponds. I was one who got into it. I developed several vacuums and went to several people's ponds to test vacuums in different conditions. Here's my page on vacuums. There's also links to building vacuums. I don't know your pond, but in general, some species of string algae when alive and mature is like horse hair. Bind a little together and it's like rope. I've pulled every bit of out of a pond in one pull and it brought pretty much everything in the pond with it up to the size of a brick. I don't think it would be possible to remove the string algae without removing the hornwort too. Once removed you could try and get some hornwort out of the string algae and replant. But string algae can come back, although often it's another species or it doesn't grow the same way next time. Even if you had no hornwort, gravel or reeds, I don't know of a single vacuum that is effective with string algae. If the string algae is still alive it is basically one plant and in your size pond when removed it could be in the 100-200 pound range. No vacuum can't handle that. I've seen a vacuum with a cutter on the end that's suppose to be able to cut the string algae. I doubt it works, but you should read reviews if considered. Even dead string algae, which breaks up easily is a big problem for a vacuum because of the volume. Easier to remove by hand or a swimming pool leaf rake. For live string algae I used 2 pieces of 1"x1" wood nailed or bolted together in the middle so they would open and close like scissors. I'd make them about 5' long. Open them a bit, push into the algae, close, and then spin them so the algae wrapped around the wood. Once I had a good ball I'd pull it out. Generally every bit of algae came along with this ball, along with anything it was attached to. Different species of string algae and the different life cycle stages can require different methods. I learned 2 basic things. First, there is no single vacuum that is effective. Ponds are cleaned in steps, removing big stuff first and ending with the small stuff. Different tools for each. Second, don't build a pond that's hard to clean. Loose rock, gravel, plants, all good great...until it's time to clean. I mortared rock so it was easy to clean and moved all plants into their own beds and so their crowns were above the water. Crowns above the water = no string algae = happy pond keeper. That means no underwater plants like hornwort and no lilies. Lilies can get their own pond or their own deep water bed adjacent to the pond so the pads can grow out over the fish pond.

Go to the store and buy a respirator. Not the white paper kind but a regular respirator. Wear it. Fill up a spray bottle with water and bleach (3 parts water to 1 part bleach). Go around and spray EVERYTHING (walls, floors, baseboards, appliances, bathroom fixtures, inside cabinets, etc.) When everything dries, while using a respirator, sweep up carefully. Take a bucket with bleach and soap, wear rubber gloves, and while wearing the respirator, wash everything down that you plan to keep, like appliances, bathroom fixtures. Mop the floor with the remaining solution. Only after you do all that can you then vacuum with a disposable bag vacuum, all while still wearing the respirator. Make sure you open all the windows to air the place out. If you get sunlight in the place all the better since ultraviolet light kills many pathogens. Don't want to make you freak out but I've been there and that's what I had to do to feel safe. Also, it's really the only way to get rid of that mousy smell. While you're at it after you clean set some traps inside ( the jaw kind work best) to see how bad your mouse problem is. I wouldn't use poison because they're finding it doesn't work well and could possibly harm you, your children or animals (if you have any), and might not give you the evidence you need to evaluate how big or small your problem is. Besides, there's nothing worse than having the smell of a mouse you poisoned die in a wall in your house. As to your question about mice liking figs - Mice will eat anything if hungry enough. The main thing is to clean up the yard, keep the grass short and any fallen figs cleaned up. Good luck.

Now going on 20 years or so I bought a Kenmore canister vac with a powerhead for the carpets (mostly hardwood then as now, with carpets here and there). It was reconditioned and not expensive. It's still around, with only a couple of changes of the powerhead belt when I caught it on fringes. It's been abused -- picking up plaster dust and drywall mud after sanding -- and it won't quit. The same basic thing, Kenmore/Panasonic is still offered. I picked up a more modern version (controls on the handle) on ebay for something like 50 bucks in order to have one vac that lived on the second floor. We have dogs and cats.

Do you want to stick with a canister or do you want an upright instead? Do you have mostly bare floors or mostly carpets? Hoover is now owned by a company called TTI... the parent company of Dirt Devil. Shark products are made by a company called Euro-pro. They are both companies that care more about marketing and advertising than producing a quality product. My vote would be for Miele or Simplicity/Riccar. Miele is a German brand, and Simplicity/Riccar is an American brand (their machines are made in St. James Missouri). They both offer uprights and canisters and produce quality products... Mieles are quiet, powerful, well built, and offer excellent filtration. Simplicity/Riccar machines are powerful and well built as well... of course most of these machines cost more than Dysons, and have to be purchased at independent vacuum shops (Miele does have a couple of models at Bed Bath and Beyond now), but you really do get what you pay for. If you get nothing else from my response, please know that I strongly recommend to avoid bagless machines at all costs. They are a mess to empty and leak dust when being used and don't filter well at all... and are very repair prone. I know several vacuum shop owners who state that repairs on bagless machines like Dysons are what keep their rent paid and lights on every month. If you get a quality machine, it will come with better attachments and sometimes even a better warranty, it will just feel solid and quality and will stand the test of time. I used to recommend Kenmore canister (made my Panasonic) when people wanted something decent for a fairly low price, but their quality has gone downhill so much recently that I cannot recommend them anymore... power nozzles and wheels break off, the electric hoses and connections develop shorts, simply not good. If you don't want to spend the money that a new quality machine demands, you can always look for a used one... Miele and Simplicity/Riccar are such good machines that buying a used one is not much of a risk at all... just get one that didn't come from a home with smokers or pets because you'll never get the smell out. Of course everyone is different, but I'd much rather have a used Lexus than a new Yugo and the difference between those two brands is very much like the difference between the brands you'll find a big box stores and the brands that you will find at real vacuum shops.

I third the Hoover, my mother has had several Hoover's (b/c of price) and none of them lasted. Most of hers would get clogged very quickly and then just blow dirt back out of the vacuum.

I have personally had an Oreck for 2 yrs. & absolutely love it! The only thing is that, yes, it is very light, *until* the bag starts filling up. You'd be amazed @ how much dirt weighs... LOL. Also, mine came w/ an 8 yr. warranty, maybe they've changed that. And, I'm not sure what filters you're talking about, maybe a newer version than mine, but I believe that mine are permanent, but could be wrong.

Anyway, good luck w/ your decision!

It sounds like you have two levels to clean and two sets of carpeted stairs - is that correct?

I am a huge Dyson fan, but don't have any experience with the slim model, and of course the regular ones would require some effort to push, and are heavy to lift.

In place of the Oreck, consider the 8-pound Simplicity Freedom. It is supposed to be a better lightweight vac than the Oreck. It is about $300.

We just bought a Hoover Windtunnel self-propelled for my elderly MIL. It was about $220 at Costco, and came with some great attachments for stair cleaning, including an extra 20 foot hose. You could get two of these for the price of one Dyson slimline. The self-propelled Windtunnel would be easy for you to use, and with one on each level, your husband would never have to lug a vacuum up the stairs.

Had the hoover wind tunnel and hated it , Messy to clean
and the filter needs cleaning every time you use it or
it looses suction. Dyson is ok but not that good. Seebo
is fantastic and I will never use another vacume again.
Well worth the money Wish I had never botherd with the
dyson and hoover.

I have a Numatic Canister vac, called "Henry". It is the best vacuum in the world!

I was sold on the canister because it has no moving parts, that means nothing to break. The suction is GREAT, the hose is 10 feet long so stairs are a breeze. The vacuum follows you around on carpet or hardwood ... plus it comes with a tool that does carpet and hardwood.

It's really a great vacuum.

It also has a 2 year warranty.

has any one tried the new Electrolux sold at Lowes, I had the Oreck it was a pure joy on carpet and very light weight,but now I have wood floors,2shedding dogs and the Oreck for some reason will not work on area rugs. I cannot figure it out , when I took it to be repaired they told me that and I thought they were crazy but when I took it up stairs with the wall to wall it was good as new it realy breaks my heart to have to get another one for down stairs. Hi, I have the Eureka BOSS, and although it is not the top of the line, it's suction is very good. As far as weight goes, I think it is about 16 lbs. It is also reasonably priced, around $150.00-$160.00. I like mine.

I had a Hoover Windtunnel bagless and a Eureka Boss, both of which broke when they were practically new. Maybe I gave up too early on the Eureka, as Consumer Reports labelled it a Best Buy two years in a row. The Hoover was an absolute dog. I had it repaired at least three times. The repairman said, "Look around. See all the Hoovers I get here to repair." I went to an appliance store determined to buy a Dyson, but the salesman talked me into a Bissel Grab and Go with a removable dirt cup. It does occasionally lose suction, but it comes apart easily so I can clean it myself.

I had a Hoover Windtunnel and hated it - it broke after just a couple of years. My sister has had to have hers repaired twice and they told her that there is a problem with the basic design.

I now have a Dyson and it has much better suction. The only thing I'm not totally happy with is the hose - it's stiff and difficult to keep extracted to a length that's convenient to use. I'm considering trying to find an extension hose that is more flexible and might be more friendly.

I second the idea of having a separate vacuum on each floor - You don't need as much suction for the hardwoods as for the carpeting so you may find you'd do better with different machines for each level.

My mother in law kept an immaculate house. Part of her cleaning system is that she had three vacuums-one on each floor. She kept them in closets when she wasn't actually vacuumimg, which I suspect she did every day.
