frameless vs. semi-frameless showers

hi, i think i read on here somewhere that someone ran into the same issue but i can't find it. i got 2 quotes from 2 different guys on our shower enclosure. it will be in the corner, so the north and east walls are our bathroom walls and the west and south 'walls' will be glass. the first guy says we can't do frameless, it has to be semi-frameless with a thin rail of metal along the top. the second guy says of course we can do frameless, as well as semi-frameless. neither guy seems to be able to tell me why they are saying what they're saying and thinks the other guy is wrong, LOL. i turn to you, o wise ones, for an answer...

It took me several months and many many glass companies coming out to give quotes to find the right glass company to do my shower. (long story) Just keep getting quotes. I didn't want anyone drilling into my floor so with each person that came out I learned a little more. My shower consists of 3 panels. One of the fixed panels is 1/2" and it runs from floor to ceiling and has 3 clips, 2 in the wall and 1 on the ceiling to hold it solid in place. The door (3/8") swings off of this panel and the other panel 3/8" is fixed with only one small clip at the top and the rest is silicon-ed in. It works terrific and it is beautiful. One thing I learned is nothing is easy and even if you hire someone to do it you practically have to learn the trade.

Although my bathroom remodel was some 5+ years ago, I got many VARIED quotes for frame-less shower walls. One company in the city proper was $2,500 while the company I went with (and MUCH BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE) was only $1,200.

Like the previous poster said -- get lots of quotes.

Why don't you shim behind the wall to make it square, then find the right size door that will fit. Don't make the door fit the wall, make the wall fit the door. I don't think a filler piece would look that attractive. In a pinch, if this is the way you want to go, you could make it yourself- simle DIY project. I'm sure HomeDepot has all the materials you would ever need.

When I had the shower door guy out to measure, he made a point of checking how high the shower head was. Ours is on a sliding bar, so it can go up pretty high. We have a 6" curb and a 6' shower wall/door height, and it is fine with our standard 8' ceiling. Our "gap" is 18". Remember also that this "gap" benefits the air circulation in your shower to help dry it out so that you don't get moldy grout. Unless you have a very high shower head (very tall shower user) you should be fine.

For a 4 foot opening, you should do a french door set up...two equal width doors on two hinges each. Say "no" to the channels. The less of this stuff, the better. Do not worry about leakage. French doors is the ultimate, you get two swinging doors allowing the ultimate in flexibility and ease of cleaning...swing each door out to clean, no more climbing around inside your shower to clean. I have 2 showers in my home with french doors and have no threshold gaskets or door gaskets, and the most leakage I have is equivalent to the amount a wet foot creates when you step out of the shower. No big deal, just leave a towel on the floor if that bothers you. This will pay back big time by eliminating channels and the silicone caulk. Super clean and fresh set up. I minimized my openings between both french doors and the walls to about 1/8".

Interestingly, I have 2 showes, and one have the header and the other doesn't. The one with the header does not have any brackets on the side or the bottom. The one without has brackets on the side and the bottom to hold the glass. I was actually given a choice on this by the glass shop. They convinced me that without the mounting brackets, it is better for the steam shower to reduce the leak. I don't know if this is true or not. But even with the header, it was not too abtrusive. On the steam shower, I actually like it without the mount brackets.

Mine sounds like yours (north/east = walls; south/west = glass). We have frameless with the chrome clips and it is perfect. The door is on the west, touching the north wall, then a 1 foot wide fixed panel that forms the corner with the south panel. I can't see why it won't work.

for jjaazzy, did your glass guy tell you that 1/2" was the best way to go for the glass panel that is floor to ceiling? one guy we asked said 3/8" is good enough, but the other one says that is wrong it has to be 1/2".
