Father's Day plans anyone?

We're having the family here for a Father's Day cookout/in. I'll visit my own dad in the a.m. at his assisted living facility and then come home and cook for my DH (with help from our daughters and a boyfriend.)

We're having:

marinated flank steak

lobster

grilled veggies

ice cream cake

We decided to give DH a break from all the cooking. My new job is much less strenuous and my commute is 1/3 of what it was, so....I have my life back!!!!

Anyone else have plans?

hi bonnieann! 2 of our grown sons will pick up DH in the am & take him to brunch. A friend who fishes in Alaska brought us some beautiful salmon filets, so I'll grill those & serve with a cucumber/dill yogurt sauce. Sweet white corn, homemade whole-grain bread, & a nice garden salad for dinner. Dessert will be one of DH's favs, banana pudding-yum!

DH knows I've been lurking here, so asked me to set the table with our wedding china.....I'll try to take decent pics & post.

Bonnie, sounds like your DH will have a wonderful dinner for FD. Marinated steak and lobster, wow, sounds yummy.

So happy your new job is allowing you more time at home and less stress too. I'm sure your family is enjoying more time with you.

Dishcindee, it sounds like you have a wonderful dinner planned for DH also. I love salmon. Sure hope you have time to snap some pictures of your table to share with all of us.

We will be going out for dinner tomorrow. Not sure where we will end up but my guess would be Johnny Carinos or Famous Dave's.

Hope everyone's FD is a fun one. It's suppose to rain here so might as well head to the city and do some shopping.LOL

We never made a big deal about Valentine'a day nor our anniversary. He was usually not home on those days. The first year we were together I sent him roses. He was building a store at Powell & Market in San Francisco. He almost fainted when they were delivered. He really thought there was a mistake. His first wife never did things for him. One year he bought me a crystal heart. As long as his memory was good he always referred to me as his bride (about 23 years). I gave him a surprise birthaday party on his 49th. It turned out that was the first birthday party he had ever had. My "gift" to him was a hard hat. I stenciled "Super Jew" on it. He really got a hoot out of that. I have a picture of him wearing it while building the first house he built for us. His 80+ years old Mother always sent each of us a check on our birthdays. He always told me to take his check and spend it on myself. When he was to select commemorative jewerly for his 25 years with Walgreen's, he selected two diamond pendants for me. I enjoyed using my silver flatware on a daily basis. One Christmas he bought me stainless flatware. He said, I should save the silver for special occasions. I never told him other wise and put the silver away and began using the stainless. When he went the nursing home a counselor asked him what he was proud of, meaning his accomplishments. He looked at me and said, "my bride". It gets no better than that. My favorite picture of us.

What a FABULOUS gift for a special day!!! I'd LOVE to have such an opportunity!! Maybe I'll suggest it to my hubby who has really indulged me my passion for a plant!! He's not a hosta-lover but he's a love to allow me my hobby and the time he's spent with me drooling over many of them in nurseries, and on field trips to other forum members homes. Actually, he's come a long way--he even likes one of our forum friends, 'Dave' and looks forward to being with him and his wife when we have gotten together to do the 'hosta-thing'! treemon--I bet your head is still whirling!! I can only imagine the fun you had and the knowledge you got to glean from those hosta-greats! WOW!!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful weekend with us, too!

My mom would have said no because she hates BD and often makes things worse by not thinking things through. I would have allowed dd to stay a couple more hours. Granted the drive isn't far. Not a big deal. Honestly from a BM perspective, I think mom's who make it impossible for a child to have extra time or impossible to agree to changes is really showing that they are jealous that they don't want their child participating with 'the other' families. I felt this way a long time ago. Lol I remember the first weekend of our seperation was devastating. It was a Thursday and the judge allowed BD to have dd Friday night- Sunday night because his parents had come in to town to support him through 'this rough time'. I did not get along with my ex inlaws. So when I found out the ENTIRE family was in town... I flipped. I stormed over there, demanded my dd back (not my time to have her) but then when BD was bringing her out, she was bawling (she was 4) I don't want to leave mommy my cousins are here!! I miss them! We're going swimming! Mommy!! I just broke down, I sat in the drive way crying (feeling sorry for me). I didn't want to go home alone. I didn't want to get divorced. He filed on a Tuesday, the following week we were in court on Thursday, this was Friday or Saturday. I had no idea BD wanted a divorce so I was just in complete shock. I let her stay. I felt like such a fool. So embarrassed how I acted. It only proved to his family how right they were about me. And that ate me up even more. I was so 'jealous' they were having family fun and I was no longer included. I changed quickly. I still sometimes feel a 'pang' of jealousy but it never goes further than a stab at the gut and I move on. So being in those same shoes I can see what people (mom's and dad's alike are guilty of this) are doing it and identify it. I don't think it's healthy. It's the most unhealthy thing for a person to walk around like that. And what neither grandma nor BM realize is they are hurting SD. She probably sulked all the way home. I often wonder if DD treats dad and SM the same as she treats me when she doesn't get her way or what she wants... I know I say yes more than they do. I hope she does though. I sometimes hate how they get 'special' treatment by dd just because she isn't around them much. It's ok to disrespect me and to whine an yell at me when she doesnt get what she wants ... But towards them she accepts their answer and says nothing back to them... But I deep down know it's because she isn't comfortable with them. I guess I'm ok with that. I actually enjoyed sharing that story because it reminds me how much I've grown in 6 1/2 years :)

Yes, I cooked for Elery and for my son in law, Dave. My other SIL, Kevin, had to work. We had Dave and the kids over for breakfast and I made his favorite, blueberry muffins, as well as pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage AND bacon. Dinner was barbecued ribs, baked beans, garlic rolls, roasted potatoes, sauteed corn. I made a gluten free chocolate pie with the pudding type filling from scratch, and a southern strawberry cobbler for Elery with fresh local strawberries, which were beautiful and sweet, almost a shame to cook them, but it's one of his favorites and we only get really good local berries once a year. We're having a family get-together at a favorite restaurant. My 3 grown kids and spouses, my Dad, and my 7 grandchildren. Unfortunately my husband won't be there
for our kids to celebrate Father's Day with him! LOL.
He's in FL, for his mom's 90th birthday! Left over a week ago and will be back middle of next week. (getting a nice vacation with his two brothers, especially the one who is also a golfer. LOL.) But Father's Day isn't the reason for the family thing since he's out of town, we'll be doing a birthday party for my granddaughter who's turning 20. (her birthday is actually on Monday).
It will seem odd without my DH, but will be fun. About 16 of us in all. Birthday Girl chose the place.

I hope everyone here has a wonderful day and I look forward to hearing about it, and seeing photos from those of you who do tables.

Our DS called from Afghanistan last night to wish DH a Happy Father's Day. We're making this a relaxed, easy day for my sweet hubby, as his days are usually so darn hectic.
He got a wonderful and totally unexpected gift of two dozen golf balls from a Vietnamese family who've been long-time patients of his. He was so touched, as he's become somewhat of their surrogate father/grandfather figure that they run every major decision past. That's one of the really nice things about being a family practice doc (the closeness, not the gifts).

This morning, Emily & I made his favorite breakfast, Huevos Rancheros. Tonight I'm making him Beef Tenderloin Medallions with Cognac Cream Sauce, Caesar Salad, Wild Mushroom saute, Caprese Salad, an appetizer, a yummy intense chocolate dessert and a great Cabernet that we bought recently. Afterwards, we'll sit out in the garden and sip some Port. The temperature here has been HOT, in the high-90s and DH is very content to sit in our air conditioned family room and watch the US Open golf tourney this afternoon. I'm sad to say that I don't have any special tablescape planned for him; just our Talavera dishes and good food, as I spent most of my free time out in that heat planting 3 red yuccas and making sure all our drip irrigation is working before we leave on vacation. Miss you all!

My husband actually has a set of NASCAR dishes. So...I set the table with those. Our daughter purchased them for him since she knows he likes racing and I like using them! lol!

I prepared one of his favorite dishes, pulled pork. We also had, at his request, potato salad, fresh green beans, and fried okra. He had iced tea, apple pie, and at one point he also indulged in a RC cola. Sounds southern, huh? lol!

I live several hundred miles from my daddy. I am blessed to still have him. I love having this opportunity to honor some of the wonderful men in our lives! Susan

Wow!!
What amazing menus you ladies have planned!
DH and I played golf this AM with some friends and then had lunch at the course with one of them and his wife met us there.
DH was supposed to work at the driving range this evening so we didn't plan anything special for dinner and then another worker showed up and took his shift, so he came home unexpectedly and we ended up just doing burgers on the grill.

Unfortunately, DH's daughters and their families are in San Diego, so no chance of them dropping by for a BBQ, LOL
