Is it really normal for Wolf range door to be crooked?

Hello,

Almost finished the kitchen, and loving my Wolf 36" DF. I noticed, though, the oven door is slightly crooked. When facing the range, the door is 1/8" lower on the left--not much but definitely noticeable.

Also, the left side of the oven door is "pulled out" further by 1/4", meaning it doesn't close as tightly, as flush, as the right side.

A Wolf repairman diagnosed it as a faulty hinge, but there was no improvement at all after the hinges were replaced. An older, more experienced repairman then arrived, saying that this uneven door thing is normal, since one side has a spring-loaded hinge and the other side has--if I remember correctly-- just a regular gas hinge.

He said the more I cook with it, the tighter the whole thing will get, and the door will even out. The whole store sounds a little suspect to me...

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I would go and look at one in a store and see how it is. Also, is your range perfectly level? Maybe that is throwing the door off? Good luck!

Hi Madeleine,
I just measured and indeed the left side of my Wolf DF over door does project out 1/4'' farther than the right side. I've had the range for two years and have never noticed this, even though I use the oven almost every day. It must not bother me aesthetically since I had not noticed as I've stood for hours gazing lovingly at my range.

Lol. Imagine a box, 3 1/2 inches on each side. Put it in the oven. that is the about the amount of space you are losing. But it isn't even that bad because it is spread out over the entirety of the top, bottom and sides. Is that worth $1500 dollars to you? to me it is almost an insignificant difference. Cubic feet is a measurment of the total inside space. Other factors come into play, such as where do the racks sit, where is the convection fan, etc. The only way to really tell which one would cook a larger turkey would be to stick that sucker in them both, in the pan you are going to use. The one that you can't close the door on is the loser, not the one rated .3 cubic feet bigger. Further, NEITHER of these ovens will cook your entire thanksgiving dinner without resorting to some extreme time management and/or cooking things in sequence, then reheating at the end. You need more oven than either one of these will give you by themselves. That is unless of course you are on the adkin's diet.

Thank you! I had found the thread about the hot door - my door heat seems reasonable, it is more the surfaces above the door, as if the oven is leaking air upwards. Interesting, though, that 201 degrees is considered ok by Wolf. Wondering if anyone has similar experience or if their ranges are only warm on top when the oven is on.

This post made me laugh ... I thought I was the only one who noticed where the vents were placed in a range! I agree that their placement can really be an issue with some ranges and that was something that I took into consideration when I was choosing which to buy. FamCook, is the floor model you are looking at the old-style AG with the top that comes apart? If it is, there is a removable drip tray that is positioned directly above the oven door. The outer edge of the drip tray forms a downward curve that covers over the door vents completely. If you were to spill some hot liquid while standing at the stove, the curved edge of the drip tray makes an excellent splash guard. I feel very confident that no spills would make it into my oven door vents while the door was closed. Some of the other ranges I looked at did not have any sort of protection over the vents .. some had such huge vents in the door that I couldn't see how things WOULDN'T fall into them! Of course, you'd have to be careful to avoid situations like you describe above where liquid fell in while the door was OPEN, but I think that since it has happened to you once, you are now aware of the possibility and it's unlikely that it will happen again.

We owned a 48” Thermidor for 14 years and regretted it for 12 of those years. We put at least $2,000 into replacement parts over that time. And yes the oven fans were very loud and near the end they would stop working and then my oven would stop working. I spent over two years researching ranges and reading hundreds of reviews. Finally we decided on the 48” RNB. We considered the Platinum but I had the same concerns as M concerning the heat coming from the back of the oven only and the constant fan blowing. Convection isn’t always the best for baked goods, bread, cakes, cookies etc. After reading some reviews on the pros and cons, I decided to go with the RNB. I have no regrets. The ovens are so quiet that I had to check to see if I turned them on. I was so used to hearing a loud fan that at first I thought something was wrong. Took a little getting used to the quiet. I love these ovens! My Christmas cookies all came out perfect; nicely browned outside and moist on the inside. Cheesecake, brownies, bread, and pizza have all baked beautifully. Meats and casseroles bake evenly and on time. My old Thermador has not baked evenly in a very long time and often stopped in the middle of baking. The RNB small oven does a wonderful job. Both ovens heat up quickly. My old small oven was useless. It took nearly an hour to heat up and twice as long to bake. I baked two 9 x 13 dishes at once in my small RNB on Christmas day and they were both finished at the same time. I could never do that in my Thermador. The ovens clean up easily, if you just take a few minutes to wipe up after a spill. I did want the higher burners of the Platinum but the oven made the difference. Also I did not need to move the griddle around. I would have like a grill to but we grill outside whenever we want so that isn’t an issue. The rolled steel griddle is like a restaurant and so much nicer than I expected. You can turn it on and leave it while you prep with no concerns. I went to a restaurant store and purchased a cleaning pad like they use in restaurants. Cleanup is easy. Something else I love is the removable steel trays underneath the burners and griddle. I just stick them in the dishwasher every couple of weeks and the look like new! I would never go back to a Thermador. I hope this helps.

Francoise, is it also slightly lower on the left when looking straight on? Like 1/8"?

I wish I didn't notice these things. Sometimes I drive myself nuts!

Oh, and yes, @Tina: it's level. The installers were great about using that giant level every which way. It's so nice for the oil to sit exactly where it's supposed to in the pan :). With my previous cooktop, it all pooled up on one side!

OMG I’m seven years late to this party but found this thread because I noticed exactly the same thing on a range installed last Wednesday. I don’t feel any heat escaping, even during the high-temp “first run” that they recommend, so based on this thread I’m going to chill out and not try to be such a perfectionist!

My GR366 has the same hinge setup and door problem -- and there was a heat mark on the left side of the door and it definitely was hotter on left side, and looked askew. After i bought the house 4 years ago, wolf sent their repair service (the only authorized in northern NJ, which is a joke since there is no competition for the repair company...), the technician tightened sone loose screws, but it still wasn't perfect -- bigger seal gap on left and door was lower on left than right side -- and it seems to have gotten worse. I realize now that there is a hinge adjuster on each side of door that allows vertical adjustment -- and technician never did this. Any technician that thinks the door will tighten up with use is an idiot. Furthermore, the unit should be rechecked for level on both axes-- fore and aft, and left and right before the hinge is adjusted. Also make sure the drip tray is fully pushed in and seated on pins the hold it in -- sometimes this gets cocked and makes the appearance of the door look worse.

The large oven door on my five year old 60” stove hangs open and let’s heat into the room and makes the front of the stove dangerously hot. The Wolf repair man replaced the springs but it is no better. The stove is unusable. What can I do?
