Good morning-Friday

Just wanted to say hello and see what everyone is doing. I got a haircut yesterday and feels so much cooler on my neck now. Did shop a bit for vacation clothes, got a pair of capris and two tops. (Also a darling little top for GD--always have to browse through that section.) I made myself stay away from the "dish" areas--need to concentrate on clothes for the moment. LOL Weather here in the low 90's all week. So what's going on with you? Luvs

Ooohhhh new clothes sound like fun!!!
DH and I are going to visit DS and family tomorrow, and I have been thinking about wearing capri's. I don't usually, because I have to wear ugly shoes, but I just might break my own rule tomorrow...it's hot...it's wet....it's humid, and high water pants might be just the ticket!;^)
We will be celebrating DDIL's b-day and their anniversary, so it will be a fun day!! The two little girls have been calling me off and on all week to tell me what we are going to do when "you and Pa get here". I don't think we could cram everything in if we stayed for a month! LOL

"bought clothes and stayed AWAY from dish dept"? Well that doesn't sound fun. LOL. Still around 110 or more here. My husband and son Jason are in N. Calif playing golf all week, where it's beautiful and cool. Golf buddy invited them. My daughter and her family left yesterday for COOL Oregon for ten days where his family has a cabin. This is their annual vacation. I get to go feed her two big dogs twice a day while they're gone. Luckily she lives less than 5 min away.
I don't think I'm having fun yet. LOL. Can't even go to Goodwill or 99 Cent store, just far enough to cause too much pain with my stupid back. Would whine but have been eBay shopping to brighten my mood.

The answer is Yes. It will take awhile unless you already have everything (equipment wise) that you need. I would still expect to NOT make a taxable profit until at least year 3. I made a profit the first year. I only had 1/3 acre in veggies, no flower and the only fruit was strawberries. Did I make minimum wage, NO. I did cover all of my expenses, since I didn't have many. When I started to expand is when I really needed to add equipment and labor help, along with more seeds/dirt/pots and such. My first year expenses were: seeds and plants -- less than $150, market fees -- $200, didn't have/use a scale that year, had all the tables, purchased bags --$15, gasoline to get to market, gas price less than $2 --$200, labor to son --$300. Bought a used tiller $250. I had some other small expenses that might have added up to another $400 max. That year I sold $1700 and was extremely happy. Didn't make much but decided that I could make more if I expanded. At that time, our market barely had 20 vendors, the last year that I was at that market it had 85 vendors and others on a waiting list. I did very good until the number of vendors increased more than the number of customer did. After that happened, it was more stressful fighting to get that customer's dollar to my stand. Now I market at a much much smaller market, that is growing. I'm not making as much as I was, but the stress is usually lower along with the prices. The key to marketing in a farmer market is to be sure you have a good market with a consistent customer/vendor base and having a great product that YOU can sell to people. If you are not a people person, it does make a big difference. Some people can grow great, but can't sell. Some people can sell, but not grow. Being able to do both, that's what it takes at farmers markets.

I spent the morning cleaning up the yard and driveway. I have a shag bark hickory tree that the squirrels use as a launching point to throw nuts at me and the two dogs! Lots of shells and twigs to clean up. Then I had to take Carmelita in for her final (16 weeks) puppy shot and we scheduled her for spaying on the 23rd. She'll be 4-3/4 months old and the vet thinks the sooner the better. She just needed to weigh at least 4 lbs. and she weighed in at 6.6 lbs. today! She is growing up so fast. Still a little grocery shopping I need to do before my chores are done for the day.

Thank you for all of the nice comments! The allium in the bottom left of the Rock Solid is not real, it's garden art - I bought them several years ago from Gardeners Supply, they were called 'Everlasting Allium' :o) I gave all of them a fresh coat of spray paint over the last year. Mantis, I looked it up and I've had Michael Bennett since Aug 2012. I think it's been growing pretty well for me. I'm pretty sure I had it in a pot for a year or two, then planted it in the ground and I moved it last year. I'm not sure how many fans I have, but it has definitely increased. I'm not sure about budcount on it. Youthful hands, hah! I sure don't feel youthful most days... I guess it's all relative - but I am under 50. Nancy, allium do not do well here at this house. They grew really well at my old house, which is just 3 miles from here, but there is major clay here (I don't know if it's native or just crummy fill dirt that the builder brought in). The alliums I planted here are petering out. I have a couple of other different colored echinacea that I like too (Sundown, I think, and a Cheyenne Spirit that is mostly reddish), but I just really love this Dixie Scarlet. I found it at a Farmer's Market last year but haven't seen it again this year. I'm not clear on how the Cheyenne Spirit is supposed to work - my mom and I 'argue' about this once in a while (did on Tuesday night on a garden walk, as a matter of fact!). She and her friend insist that there are different colored flowers on the same plant (and I know the marketing pictures show that), but I think it's just because there are multiple seeds planted in the same pot that grow together and look like one plant. Sherry, I just got Neon Flamingo last year, so really can't comment too much on it. I have only had two blooms open so far. But, here is a picture I just took of the plant, you can see how straight and sturdy the scapes are. They are around 28-31" tall, but again, the plant isn't settled in yet. Thanks, all! Celeste, you are right about Butter Cream - I first saw it at a daylily show maybe 8 or 10 years ago and knew I had to have it. I was in awe (and still am). At that time, it was hard to find and the price was 3-4x higher than it is now... I finally bought it two years ago and paid around $25. Yes, Mantis, we got .22 inches on Thursday night and another .06 last night - yay for a little rain! Nat, I didn't show any of the ugly FFOs - Bullfrog Kisses is one that I'll wait to show when/if I get a good bloom! Dick, I traded part of my RFK and moved the remaining 2 fans when I did that in May - I was afraid I wouldn't even get to see it bloom this year... in my spreadsheet I see that it's FFO was July 6th last year. I have not gotten rebloom on RFK, but it's in a better spot now, so maybe I will in the future! Maryl, yes, that's one of my everlasting allium :)

Sounds like you two will be having fun. We never go on vacations, people come here to go on vacation, lol. I do have a bridal shower an hour away on Sunday...a shower on 4th of July weekend?? Leave the Hamptons where everyone is trying to be...oh well.

Jaybird, I have a hard time finding capris since I am only 5'1"--many of them are almost long enough to be slacks! LOL Hey, when it gets hot, I go for cool and comfortable--forget the fashion police! Isn't it great that your granddaughters are so thrilled you are coming? Have a great time.

Karen, I had to head towards the Mall today on an errand, so I did run into Marshall's to see what new dishes they might have. Really no new things that excited me. They did have some fish shaped bowls, but they were much bigger than I would want, also saw a cake pedestal in the red Bordallo with the little stars--very pretty. I have to say that they sometimes let their stores get so messy. They really need someone who could arrange the displays of the dishes better. So many things get broken too. Some of those tall glass jars had chips in the top or lids and many plates and bowls have chips in them--so sad to see that. Sounds like all your family have headed off to cooler locales. Good thing they have you to take care of the home front. Good that your DH and DS enjoy golfing together. Can't wait to see your ebay finds--can we look forward to a Monday post?

Kathleen, I just read an article in a magazine about your neck of the woods. I wanted to tell you about it, but now I can't remember which mag it was in. It was an article on vacation destinations--named several of the neat shops too.

Glad you are all well and busy. Got to go read the rest of the posts--have the evening to myself, DH went to play pool.
