That was a fun site to visit Snolady. Thansks for sharing it with us. I've actually made a couple of small stands like those, and of course, my "stacked" plates are just temporarily fastened together. Why is it that things just look prettier on a cake stand? LOL

Occasionally cake stands and domes come into the thrift stores, too, all on their own. Which is always a bit surprising, when the domes are nicely intact. But you can get some good deals on some really nice display pieces.

I know the one day I was looking for one-- LO! There it was at the Salvation Army.

Funny how that happens. Love it!

oakley - that's a beautiful server/stand. I think is going to be a beautiful addition to your hutch. I have a gold finished three layer stand which allows you to use your own plates according to the time of year, or what holiday or event you are using it to serve from. The stand takes standard size china or dinner plates. I've had it forever, but use it frequently when we have dinner guests. I don't have to worry about where I am going to park the desserts. I can put three pies, or three different desserts, one on each layer. Sometimes I will use the top layer for candies or chocolates. The $20 cake stands (set of 3 graduated sizes) I purchased from Target online are clear glass. I purchased them to use in decorating project I was inspired to do after seeing one that judithva created. The three graduated clear stands plus a sundae dish from a dollar store are the "bones" of the project. You can do any holiday or occasion, only limited by your imagination! When they aren't "decorated", the stands can be used separately. Very nice to have the different size options.

The house I bought a couple years ago (and have yet to move into) was painted top to bottom, recarpeted in the bedrooms and completely and heavily staged for sale. The house was first renovated for sale in 2007 and I guess because the market dropped they kept it off the market. But the house was not really lived in for three plus years. In 2007 new cheap replacement windows and a new cheap kitchen and bath went in. When I bought the house in 2011, there were still packing materials in the DW and oven. Prior to the 2011 placement on the market the entire house was painted a dark khaki with a orangy brown undertone, and the trim painted a dark khaki with a slightly pinkish undertone. (?) And carpeted in decent quality dark khaki carpet. Then it was heavily staged with dark transitional microfiber and espresso-stained furniture. I don't know if it wouldn't have been better to paint the entire inside off-white and call it done. It was neutralized, it was furnished inoffensively, but it was all rather depressing anyway. It did cover a lot of previous sins, I guess. The owner was "artistic" and one room had been Yield sign Yellow, with Stop sign Red trim. Another pale green faux finish with french blue trim. Hideous. But the staging, although neutral, didn't really showcase the house. And, when it came time to rent it, the tenants asked that I change the depressing brown color and depressing brown carpet. The carpet stayed, it literally still smelled like new carpet, but I did paint their bedrooms since they supplied the paint. I actually thought the house looked better empty, and cleaner than it had been, once I covered some of the khaki. I know staging is considered important in some regards but I am not sure it affected my decision to buy the house, and the tenants didn't like it either. (although their furniture looks an awful lot like the staging furniture, generic transitional).

I had to read this twice. Looks like from the second post that the OP did not encourage the family to attend the wedding - the 'adult' part of her simply decided not to push the issue and agreed not to attend, herself. Dirtunder, are you upset by the events, or are you upset by the silence? Sometimes the elephant in the room left undiscussed is far more painful then the event itself. At any rate, we all benefit by setting emotions aside and by learning how to talk to our families about what upsets us. BTW, is anyone talking about the fact that brother is an alcoholic and had (has) sexual boundary issues? This seems like a forest through the trees topic to me.

Pretty stands....and these are so easy to make from thrift store finds at little cost. I love stacked cake plates!

Thanks snolady for posting that link. There sure are a lot of beautiful cake stands there. I have a couple but haven't gotten into the stacked plates yet...keep thinking about it though.

Dining Delight you should go ahead and take the plunge and do some stacked plates. They are so fun to do, and really get a lot of comments from family and friends who visit.

Judith did a step by step picture tutorial for us a couple years ago. Wonder if she could repost it for you? It might still be in one of the old threads on here.

Hmmm! Maybe we should all do a new thread for just our stacked plates we have done--that would be a fun inspiration post for newbies. What do you think gals?

Luvs, I have seen SO MANY WONDERFUL displays of stacked plates on this forum even before I came out of "lurkdom"..I think I remember Judith's step by step tutorial. I love your idea of an "inspirational post" for us newbies though. I think I will keep my eye out for a set of the stacking plates at a good price and go from there.

I know I have to go back to Ross where I saw some pretty plates in different sizes that would make a beautiful stacked set and several that looked antique, so my mind is racing and remembering those Spode plates that were blue and yellow at Ross.

What do we use to glue the plate to the stand permanently?
I read somewhere about an apoxy but can not find it now.

There is a product called museum gel that will hold glass pieces together, and it is also reusable. I haven't used it myself, but here is a link to the information.

Thanks. Would that be safe if someone picked the stand up or shoud it be a permanemt bond?

Linda, you could also use the GE Silicone II clear for windows and doors. It is water and heat resistant. I get mine at Walmart or Lowe's. Luvs

Thanks Luvs, that is what I was just getting out. That will be a permanent seal will it not? I just called a hardware store and she said I might could use the clear glue that is used to seal aquariums. I have the Silicone II for the windows so I am going to try that.

The GE II holds really well. Some ladies on the GJ forum have said that they have taken pieces apart by using a box cutter knife and cutting through the seal of the glue, but I've never tried that. Only other problem I've heard is if you get a really old tube of the glue. Just be sure to let it dry overnight before you try to pick it up. Can't wait to see what you create. Luvs
