Two 6x8 HFGH and central shed idea -- Additional suggestions?
Comments (37)A recent update from the person who received the yucca is that it is green and doing well. The transplanted cholla are doing well, of course, but it will be a while before I know if any sacaton survived. We have been making progress but not as quickly as we hoped. (No surprise there! ;-) ) We have the foundation blocks for the outside beds in place up to ground level and filled with dirt. Pavers have been placed, but not yet leveled, between the existing shed and the north edge of the foundation. We have the water and electrical stubbed in. We have the SHCS tubes in place for the outside beds of the east greenhouse and hope to start filling that section soon with the removed dirt. We have removed all planned use of poured concrete from our plans and have made this planned structure possible to remove easily while still unlikely to be blown away. (Mostly due to bolting the foundation via J-bolts to rebar under bond beam cement blocks.) DH will be checking to see what type of permits/inspections we will need for electrical, water, and structures. I suspect that it will be just water and electric. We won't fill in any more until we find out. It is getting hot already so we will be putting in the outside structure and shade cloth before the central shed and greenhouses. That way we can work in the shade. :-)...See MoreScratch and Stain Resistant Electric Stovetops
Comments (34)A German company, Schott Ceran, makes a proprietary scratch resistant “ Ceran” cooktop. Miradur and Luminoir are two of their proprietary products. In addition to their own products, they also partner with Bosch, Miele and some other brands that provide this cooktop. My Jenn Air electric range is 23 years old. It has a Ceran cooktop that has held up beautifully and still looks amazing. Unfortunately, I must now replace the range. My research shows that Ceran is only available now on high end luxury brands. Jenn Air is now owned by Whirlpool. So far, I find no reference to Ceran still being used for the new Jenn Air cooktops. I’m seeing reviews on many name brand ranges indicating low quality finishes that peel or rub off, faulty components, inadequate self cleaning features, unpredictable temperature variations and limited customer service. I try to find reviews from customers who have had their new range long enough to experience the real result; not just the beautiful new range in the kitchen. I’m very discouraged in my quest for a new electric slide in range. In our household, the range gets a lot of use. It is a major consideration. I don’t want to replace it again in a few years. Looks like I may have to commit to a far more expensive purchase than originally planned in order to get the cooktop and more reliable features I need....See Moredishwasher - panel or no panel?
Comments (14)annesv - I never had a paneled DW in the past and when we remodeled, I didn't even consider getting a paneled one. I regret that decision. To change it now would be costly because it would involve buying a different DW in addition to the cost of the custom panel. Judydel's bar pull seems to have solved the problem with the panel getting wet. Could you ask your KD for a mock-up photo of the kitchen with a paneled vs not paneled DW?...See More2x4 vs 2x6 exterior studs with spray foam insulation. Better Option?
Comments (49)Michigan occupies building climate zones 5 - 7. Zone 5 is the warmest zone that can still comply with the R20 cavity-only requirement. It looks like Ontario has adopted similar IRC mandatory exterior insulative sheathing. We use the performance compliance path on every home, one of the many advantages to including a third party energy rater. Most raters are not keen on getting too far away from code prescriptions. For some of the prescriptions, like blower door minimums, it's cost-effective to exceed code. Most high performance builders are exceeding code with exterior insulation as code encourages risky wall strategies, hence the recommended minimum table I first posted about. Even leaky, all natural homes can have poor indoor air quality. Outdoor air ventilation is now required by current IRC codes and a smart idea for any inhabited enclosed space. It's a life-safety requirement and long overdue measure for modern homes....See Moregreg_2010
