Show me how you cover up your kickplates on paneled appliances
Comments (4)You will want to be careful to ensure adequate airflow if you replace the stock kickplate vent or cover it with another layer. The vents in the picture actually look a little constricted to me. Theoretically, if the fridge breaks for lack of ventilation they could refuse to warrant it if the vents are too small...though I suppose you could always remove the extra layer before the repairman comes and plead ignorance. Anyway, two other options: (1) I don't know whether the Kitchenaid grills are metal or plastic, but either way they are usually paintable to match the other areas of the toekick. It would still be obviously a grill, however, and the knob would be visable. (2) You can retain (and possibly paint) the original grill, and at the front of the toekick put in fake furniture-style legs and optionally a partial plinth (attached with velcro). Since it's going to look a little different whatever you do, this can make a lot of sense. With the partial plinth and legs in front, most people won't notice the grill unless they are on floor level (especially if it is painted to match the floor, rather than the rest of the toekick). I did a quick search for picture of this approach, and found one in the attached recentish post from gardenweb member jm_seattle. Of course, if you want to avoid the issue entirely you can get the Subzero drawers instead - they don't have a visible grill at all, looks like the rest of your toekick. For the dishwasher, you don't need a vent but most will leave a small gap at the bottom just so any leak is caught quickly - instead of building up and causing damage hidden behind the toekick, it would theoretically run out the gap and you would notice it sooner. Other than that, I think pretty much everybody just uses a piece of matching toekick trim velcroed on. Comments (17)I panelled everything that didn't get too hot (inc. the warming drawer which only gets a little hot), so if I vote for panelled, it probably doesn't mean much. A panel ready dishwasher costs more, however, plus having a a decent carpenter to make you a nice panel if you want it to look like a cabinet, not just like from the same company. Someone in a similar situation used a white DW and it looked good, but I'd probably just go with stainless at that point. If you want the panel to look like a cabinet (or drawers or whatever), your carpenter can make a frame that looks like the cabinet frames, and you can put fronts within it to match your doors/drawers. Or you could just buy the frame and fronts from the cabinet company. The carpenter might have to thin the frame a bit to make everything line up. Do check the specs as well, to make sure how much thickness the DW will take and still match up with your already installed cabinets....See MoreExplain to me how panels on panel ready dishwasher doors are attached
Comments (17)Did you read the installation instructions? Step 4 shows how to level the dishwasher and push it into place. Step 5 shows the panel width, panel height range, allowable weight of the door, and how the door handle is attached (screws must be countersunk). Step 6 shows how to adjust the door height to match adjacent cabinets. Step 9 shows how the panel is attached to the appliance, and Step 13 shows how to adjust the door to accommodate panel weight....See MoreBosch panel ready dishwasher - panel door too tall
Comments (6)@hallettco I used an Amish cabinet maker - just measured and the finish height is 34 1/2" but the toe kick is only 3 3/4" - so that's the discrepancy. Apparently these are the specs he always uses, but they don't make sense when trying to have a dishwasher that coordinates with the cabinets and toe kicks. I'm surprised he didn't run into issues before, even with dishwashers that aren't panel ready the toe kicks of the cabinets and dishwasher wouldn't align. Or other clients didn't care or notice... Didn't think I needed to specify the toe kick height with him since that's typically standardized. What type of filler did you use on that dishwasher? I did a google search but mostly ran across fillers for ranges. Or I need to track down those sliding hinges. That seems like a decent option if I can find them. Thanks for the help!...See MoreBuehl
