Hand held shower only placement

I'm putting in a Grohe Atrio hand held shower on a 24" bar in my guest bath. My shower is 37" wide. My plumber is recommending we put the 7.5" pressure balance valve in the center of the 37" and put the bar off center with the shower head tilted toward the center. I'm thinking I'd like the bar centered and put the pressure bal valve off center. The issue is the valve trim is pretty large at 7.5" will it look funny off center? All of the photos I see of this set up are for larger showers so there's more space for the bar and trim. Anyone have this kind of setup and how did you do the placement. Thanks.

Nancy, I have the Grohe Atrio trim, too, with a handheld, although not on a bar. It's a different configuration than your's, but I'm posting a picture for you because I think you can center both. In my picture, the part on the 7.5" plate is the temp. control, that would be your pressure balance valve. You could easily put a 24" bar above that (the tiles you see are 13 x 13). Hope this helps. (P.S. We're using a Waterpik shower head from Costco which is fabulous -- took off the Grohe Movario).

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. While bonnieg011 's arrangement would technically work for me, it would be more effort to install. I'd have to drill through another corner of the support structure, and get four long hoses to connect the faucet to the levers 5 feet away. Plus, while it does sound nice to be able to top up the hot water without getting it in the face, or having to re-arrange yourself to reach the controls, it also seems like it'd be a pain to fill the tub in the first place, since you'd have to adjust the knobs, then run over to the other end of the tub, check the temp, then run back. I know it wouldn't be that bad, but I also just prefer the look of all the chrome things clustered together. -Joel

There's also something like the following which are intended for a retrofit (Kohler example; there are others). The top bracket that mounts to the wall is actually attached to the source for the original shower head. I'm not sure what your point is about your linen closet not having an access panel. It has nothing to do with new construction. I also wanted to maintain my existing tile. My home was built in the late 50's and it did not have an access panel in the linen closet either. That didn't stop the plumber from busting a large hole in the plaster wall in the closet. I created my own access panel to cover it up. Well it's really your decision on whether you want to trade form for function. In my case, I have never thought a bar looked badly. It simply never crossed my mind. When we built, I wanted a bar pretty badly because I came from the exact situation you were considering and I hated it. When I diverted to the handheld, the power of the spray spun the handheld around on the pivet point and I had to make sure I had it in my hand when I diverted the water. I never could use the handheld as shower head on the pivot because it wasnt in the right spot. We had four people using one shower and nothing was ever in the right spot for any of us. It was a no-brainer for us that we would never get ourselves in that "fixed position" again. With the handheld on the bar, you save yourself the cost of a showerhead PLUS a handheld. We were then able to afford a quality company, Grohe, for one of our baths. We did make a huge mistake in choosing Moen for our master bath, however. We have had nothing but problems. We only chose them originally because the polished brass (very desirable at that time) was more affordable...now I know why....

agree with ravencajun that there are some really nice handhelds out there that rival or even beat a basic fixed head, plus their utility for cleaning is critical to me. Another option is to place the handheld on a slide bar so you can adjust to different heights. This is especially nice for kids or folks with very different heights. Unless you have a wide tub, I would be inclined to go with a really nice handheld on a bar and the tub spout, otherwise as linelle pointed out it will get busy with so many fixtures. Plus you will need additional diverter valves and trim for extra fixtures and you may decide that money might be better spent on upgrading the shower head (or some other part of your redo) We went all out in ours, but it is a good sized shower only - but you can see what it looks like in the picture below with two fixtures on one wall. I have a hansgrohe 36" wallbar in our shower over tub. We did this since it is guest/kids bath so it can be lowered for the kids, or put towards top when adults use it. Our bar is mounted center and so is the pressure/temp valve. the valve the water comes into the hose for the handheld (forget the tech name of it), is off center from the wallbar. I would include a pic, but don't know how. It works great and think it looks great too. Good luck.

Our GC just asked us the same question (wants to put the bar off centre).
