Nearly 44 rivers criss cross Kerala popularly known as the âÂÂGodâÂÂs Own CountryâÂÂ. The numerous lagoons, rivers, lakes and even backwaters lying adjacent to one another is a unique feature of this land. Perhaps no other place has such a proliferation of different backwaters.

In Kerala package tours will take you through the unexplored areas in the backwaters, rivers, lakes and lagoons. The hundreds of houseboats plying through the backwaters from Kollam district in the south to the prominent Kumarakom area in central Kerala offer world-class luxury amenities. Even then they combine the traditional house building patterns followed since age-old times.

Due to the proliferation of the different types of backwaters, lakes, rivers, lagoons, other water bodies and areas with natural diversities, rare developments take place during different parts of the year. When most of the rivers drain into the sea, a unique ecosystem gets created there. In Trivandrum district, Poovar Island is a meeting point of a river, lake and the sea. Nearly three luxury resorts have now come up in this island. To reach this place, youâÂÂll have to take a boat ride through the Neyyar River.

Another interesting aspect of the meeting points of the rivers, lakes and the sea is that during the summer months, when water flow in the rivers start decreasing, the sea waves that lash against the land used to naturally close the flow of water into the sea by creating a sand barrier. For the river water to flow into the sea either there should be summer rains for several days or everything will have to wait till the advent of the monsoon. During the monsoon time due to copious rainfall, all the rivers overflow and the push of the water used to naturally break open the sand barrier. The developments in this meeting point are rare sights and to witness these developments a visitor will have to make specific tour plans at affordable rates.

Even in these modern times, very few fishermen have taken to the advanced fishing methods in the state. Even now, only the traditional fishing methods are popular and the age-old traditional Chinese fishing nets can be seen in many parts of the state. To enjoy the work of the traditional fishermen and also to relish the catch right on the table, a ride through the backwaters is a must.
