Decorating a Cake Plate...

We went to a birthday celebration for a friend tonight. I gave her a cake plate, decorated with a carrot cake with nuts and pineapple and cream cheese icing.

Kathleen, Your cake is just beautiful and the pansies on top look perfect with the blue cake plate. What a nice birthday present. I love carrot cake.

I've been around for a lot of years and collected antique glass for more than 40 years....and have never seen a patterned glass cake plate with a plain glass dome. In fact I have seen precious few glass cake domes until just these past few years....when the Princess house lines and the Martha Stewart lines came out. I believe you have a nice old cake plate.....and a dome...not a set. There are lots of similar domes and cakeplate "sets" on ebay asking about $30.....and a few where the dome has a pattern reflecting the pattern on the plate....those are asking for more. I have 6 or 7 old pattern glass cake plates and a couple of plain glass domes that were meant to be cheese domes....smaller than a cake dome. I have never seen a matching antique plate and dome for sale....at an auction, a shop or an antiques show.

Making a firm cake out of a cake mix for decorating

I always use the method from "The Cake Mix Doctor" (and use it for ANY flavor cake mix): BASIC YELLOW BUTTER CAKE 1 yellow cake mix (18-1/4 oz.) 1 stick butter (8 Tblsp.) butter, melted (do not use margarine) 1 cup milk (2% or whole Â not skim) 3 large eggs 2 tsp. Vanilla extract Preheat oven to 350Â° F. Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans. In large mixing bowl, combine ingredients listed above. Beat just until blended, and no lumps remain. Pour into pans and bake at 350Â° F. for 27-29 minutes or until cake tests done. If making cupcakes, bake for 20 minutes.

Bebe..............how funny in a very nice way! Everyone - just everyone does Yard Sales! And if they don't they really, really want to and are just scared - like you - to be seen at one....how brave of you to try! I don't go often because of the mileage to and from but when we do...we do it big! We make it either a ladies event or a family affair with a late lunch after shopping. On Labor Day Weekend we get together with about 8 to 10 other couples for the weekend, the guy go play mini golf or just hang out and we girls (and a few of the guys) hit the sales. There has been as many as 4 vehicles going from one sale to another and it is so fun. We make a list of things that we are looking for and give it to each group, so as we move around a sale if someone see something on the list they tell that person. We laugh and joke and most home owners have as much fun as we do! Many areas have block sales and these are really fun! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO go for it! Belle PS I used to feel guilty for not buying anything, now I just tell the owner thank you...and that seems to work.

Was that cake plate one of your Pier One bargain finds? You said you bought extras for gifts. You decorated it beautifully. I'm sure she was thrilled. Luvs

Terri, that's good, a SWEET gift! Luvs, yes, that is the Pier One plate. She has the same fruit w blue trim dishes, so it goes nicely.
Thank you ladies, I am out of practice. I used to be able to whip several of those out in the time it took to do just one. I hope she liked it, the cake came out good, everyone seemed to enjoy it I also made brownies w cream cheese and choc icing.

Wow Kathleen, that is beautiful! The pansies are a lovely touch and compliment the plate wonderfully.

By the way, with I had a piece of that cake...it looks delish!
