Christmas Cake plate and cover

This was a metal cake cover and pedestal plate I had found at TS at different times. Both are fairly lightweight, so not "the good stuff".

I had found a cute gingerbread and candy pattern I wanted to use, but when I reduced it to fit, the details would not have shown up much. So I then remembered this design with the candies and holly. There's a design on the front and back.

The red had to have multiple coats to get a nice even coverage, and keeping the edges of the red sections neat wasn't easy either!

I do think it turned out pretty good in the end, and know I will enjoy using it on my table during the holidays.

Oh, I will not be putting food directly on the painted stand but will set a glass plate inside it to hold the food. Also this will not be submersed in water, only wiped off with a damp cloth.

Soooo cool! You did such an awesome job on it. I love the candy. Love how the hi-lites make it look 3D. It's gonna look so good on your holiday table!! ~Anj

Luvs, your cake plate and top looks great together. I would of never thought to put the two together. Your so talented. You will love having this out for your holiday table and the others will be wanting one just like it for theirs.

Good choice on the pattern cuz it looks 3D like Anj said. Have you ever painted green first and then painted red to cover easier? I read this somewhere and have done this but don't remember what I thought after wards. I'll have to try it again and see what I think and maybe I'll remember this time. LOL

This recipe is one I make this time of year for birthdays, not necessarily Christmas. A very luscious chocolate cake, but inexpensive. It can be kept plain or filled and decorated as you like. BOILED CHOCOLATE CAKE: Into a saucepan, put 4oz Butter 1Cup Water, 1 Cup Sugar and 2 tablespoons of a good Cocoa Powder. Bring to the boil and simmer for three minutes. Let cool. Then mix in 2 eggs 1 1/2 Cups of Self Raising Flour 1 teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda. Put in whatever tin you like, eg:can be made into a slab or a conventional cake in an 8" tin. Bake in moderate oven until firm. We are on a dairy-free diet, so instead of cream as a filling, I make cooked filling with soy milk. For birthdays I make a white custard and a choc-custard and layer the cake with them then cover with icing. It is just delicious. For Christmas I make a 'traditional' Christmas Pudding. The recipe has been handed down through generations of my past husbands family. I have modernised it somewhat. I don't boil it in a cloth and I use a good quality margarine instead of 'suet'. Also add other dried fruits too if I have them, eg: dried apricots and dates. This recipe is a large quantity, can be broken down to half or a quarter. AUNTY ELSIE'S CHRISTMAS PUDDING 1 1/2 lbs Plain Flour 1 teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda 1 lb fresh breadcrumbs 21b suet (any shortening will do, butter or margarine) 3 lb sultanas 3lb raisins 3lb currants 1 1/4 lbs sugar (can mix white and brown) 1 Cup Milk 20 Eggs Brandy, Whiskey or Fruit Juice Chop the raisins and mix fruit, sugar and put some in liquor/fruit juice to moisten and leave to meld overnight or several days occasionally giving it a stir through. Mix in all other ingrediants and put into well greased tins or bowls and cover with greased cooking paper or a lid and tie the top. Put into a pan of boiling water that just comes up two thirds of the way of the side of the recepticle. Boil gently for five hours, replenishing the water with boiling water every hour or so. This can be made days or weeks before Christmas. To reheat we just slice and heat in the microwave! In the old days they used to reboil it. Probably a good idea when done in a pudding cloth. Is just fine reheated in the microwave though. Can be served with a brandy custard or last year I glazed ours with a caramel sauce as well. For Christmas lunch before the pudding, and some cold sweets too, we usually have a roast, pork and turkey or duck and fresh vegetables from my Dad's garden. Welcome Purplemoon, how wonderful to have another enthusist here! Your stacking plates are cute! If you want it "fuller" maybe you could add a few round sparkly Xmas ornis to it, and add some larger red roses, those slightly bigger things help add height and weight to the design. Your DIL did wonderful on her plates too, it is so cool that you two could do this together! I'm sure the dish manufactors in certain areas are wondering why the rush on the cake plates, they're probably thinking everyone is doing some "cookin" LOLOLO The easter plates should be pretty easy to do for everyone, since so much is available out there compaired to V-Day.

Jeanne, what a beautiful setting. It all looks lovely together. Your DGM compote dish w/glass spoon and the other depression dishes are so neat. DF keeps telling me she is going to give me a snack set in pink that was DH's aunts and I can hardly wait. I love all of these dishes. RECIPE: Marzipan for Christmas Fruit Cake. - recipe or buy it?

Here are a couple of recipes that I have tucked away in my cookbook. I did make marzipan one christmas to make minature fruits for decorating a cookie tray. It worked out well. Don't know about the total yeld, but think you could make a couple of batches.....or adjust the ingredients to suit your purpose. (Bought some marzipan once, but it did not have a good taste, so it was a waste of good money. That is when I decided to make my own!) ALMOND PASTE 100 g blanched almonds 100 g icing sugar egg white 2 ml almond extract Grate the almonds finely and mix with the sieved icing sugar in a bowl. Mix in egg white, little at a time, until you get a soft and kneadable mixture. Add the almond extract and continue kneading with your hands. Wrap the almond paste tightly in plastic. Use it to make candies, to cover cakes or to fill traditional Finnish shrove buns. Almond paste may be coloured and flavoured with food colourings, cocoa powder and various essences and extracts. There is enormous confusion about the difference between what we call "almond paste"and what some confectioners call "marzipan," and candy manuals are not much help. Some would say our recipe is one for marzipan, others would say, that it's almond paste. But whatever name, you can use the paste made by this recipe in pastry and cake fillings, as well as to make small candy shapes that you can tint, using a small brush and food coloring. The advantage of making your own, over most of the versions available in shops is the absence of inexpensive fillers and excessive bitter almond extract that compromise the delicacy of the flavor. Those with nineteenth century leanings might prefer rose water to the almond extract in the recipe. (Nice for wedding or special cakes.) Well wrapped and refrigerated, the paste will keep for many months. .1/2 pound whole, blanched Almonds 2 tablespoons Water (for processing almonds) 1 cup Sugar 1/2 cup Water (for the syrup) 2 tablespoons Light Corn Syrup 1/2 teaspoon Almond Extract, or more to taste Preheat the oven to 250 degrees and spread the blanched almonds on a baking sheet. Bake, stirring frequently, until they are heated through but not browned. While the almonds are still hot, put them into the container of a blender or food processor and grind them as fine as possible, adding the 2 tablespoons water gradually and stopping to scrape down the sides of the container occasionally. When you pinch a bit and feel no coarse grain, the nuts are fine enough. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, 1/2 cup water, and corn syrup. Boil without stirring until the syrup reaches 235 degrees on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat and stir in the flavoring. Start the blender (or food processor) and add the hot syrup in a thin stream through the feeder opening in the cover. Continue to process until the mixture is uniform. Cool the almond paste and pack it into a jar, or wrap it in plastic, allow it to ripen in the refrigerator for a week or so before using it. (If necessary to soften the almond paste after storage, heat it, wrapped in foil, in a steamer over boiling water, or put it unwrapped in the upper part of a double boiler over boiling water, just until it is pliable enough to use.)

Your cake tin is truly awesome Luvs! I can't wait to find one I can paint! You are so very clever in finding different surfaces to paint, I need to take my mind off the flat surfaces! Was this a pattern or one of your creations! Either way it is great!

Belle, you are so cute! Your comments made me laugh. I just love the thrill of the hunt I get from scouring the TS in the area and I always look for things I can paint.

I've seen some of these online and just drooled over them, so had been keeping an eye open to find my own. And I just couldn't believe I found two of them within a week of each other after having been wanting one for months and months! LOL

Today, I saw a neat wooden wall pocket that might have been fun to paint--but it had no price tag on it so I had to pass on it.

Hope you find just the project to work on, I'll be looking forward to your posting it. ;o)

I'm so glad that this has got Belle ready to paint something. haha We are always ready for a new project to share. Fresh water that's one way to say it alright. How Fun. I want to paint one of these also but don't have one yet. Yard Sales are my bag so maybe soon.

Punk, I seldom get up the nerve to stop at yardsales even though I know there are sometimes fantastic bargains! Just always feel awkward if I don't buy something! LOL

Also, around here allot of them are mainly clothing--I want wooden items, metal items, and dishes! LOL

Luvs, you always do such a good job with your paintings. I love this idea so much I am bidding on a vintage aluminum cake cover.

I love yard sales but don't have the patience to drive around looking for them. And I am not very good with bargaining - I have to have my husband do that. My sister is the best yarder, she told me to wear the worst outfit I have and not to wear my jewelry. I have a think about looking nice when I leave the house and I only have one pair of jeans (jeans were so casual, I only wore dress pants). But my fear is someone I know will see me and wonder what happened to me after I retired!! But I am going to try - I am going to get a T shirt and a pair of those jeans that have holes in them, brush my hair straight back, no make up, no jewelry and my crocs - she is going to be so proud of me! But first, I have to get a pair of sunglasses - you never know who you will meet at one of those sales.

Bebe..............how funny in a very nice way! Everyone - just everyone does Yard Sales! And if they don't they really, really want to and are just scared - like you - to be seen at one....how brave of you to try! I don't go often because of the mileage to and from but when we do...we do it big! We make it either a ladies event or a family affair with a late lunch after shopping. On Labor Day Weekend we get together with about 8 to 10 other couples for the weekend, the guy go play mini golf or just hang out and we girls (and a few of the guys) hit the sales. There has been as many as 4 vehicles going from one sale to another and it is so fun. We make a list of things that we are looking for and give it to each group, so as we move around a sale if someone see something on the list they tell that person. We laugh and joke and most home owners have as much fun as we do! Many areas have block sales and these are really fun! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO go for it!

PS I used to feel guilty for not buying anything, now I just tell the owner thank you...and that seems to work.

Bebe, If you run into someone you know at a yard sale--they are yardsaling too! LOL

Imagine your sister is telling you to look "poorer" so they might give you a better deal--but most yard sale prices are pretty low to start with, so I don't think that will be an issue for you. Just go as you normally dress, and if someone sees you, just say "I'm looking for things I can paint and give new life too--my way of recycling, repurposing, and reusing." This cake cover was only $1.99 and the pedestal bottom was $1.99, both found at two different TS at different times.

Everybody seems to be going now, many look for bargains to resell on Ebay. Even the owner of the little antiques and collectibles shop where I used to work goes to them.

Belle, your way of doing it sounds like allot of fun. How nice to go as a whole group. And I will try your suggestion of just saying "thank you" when I don't find anything I want to buy. My problem is that I tend to buy things I don't really need just because they are a bargain! LOL

Luvs, how wonderful that I choose one of your favorites as well as mine to bring up. I can hardly wait to see your next cake plate all painted up. I think little cupcakes with sparkling frosting would be cute.LOL

I did get quite a few pictures downloaded to Photobucket again so they could be viewed still. However some I don't have on my computer or camera any longer.
