decent double wall ovens other than Electrolux?

Well, after picking out everything I wanted, including double Electrolux wall ovens, we got the final estimate from our GC, and now I think I need to downgrade to something less costly than Electrolux. I'd still like one of them to have convection. Does anyone have a recommendation? (I know KitchenAid is risky because of the cleaning cycle problems). Thanks in advance!

I've heard good things about the Bosch. They were recommended by a friend of ours and were also rated highly in the most recent issue of Consumer Reports kitchen guide. I'm not sure how they compare cost-wise to the Electrolux though. Worth a look though.

I would think hard about other things you could cut back on other than your ovens. I have the Electrolux ovens and they would be the last thing I would give up.A really good oven is very important.

Hi again, Lilia. Sears outlet is a wonderful resource. I bought a great Samsung fridge with a teeny dent, yeah in the front, for my daughter, for a terrific price. Sears may be the largest appliance retailer in the world, and their outlet stores are the way they get rid of, or put back into circulation, the dents and scratches or reconditioned items. I had no qualms. Getting a 30" was easy for me as we did a gut reno, with all new custom cabinetry. But, keep in mind that a lot of the fancy, expensive stoves/ranges (not cooktops necessarily) have smallish ovens. Those buyers adore huge flames on their cooktops, and pay little mind to the size or functionality of their ovens(in my opinion). They lust after the searing capability of their stovetops and don't give a hoot about ovens. Tons of expensive ranges/stoves have ovens that are way smaller than 27" wall ovens. Cj47 who posted here is a particular hero of mine, and a respected cook and baker. She modestly gave her opinion and said,' oh, contact me'. Cj has, as I recall, 3 hungry teens. She has a Miele induction cooktop-I have a Bosch induction cooktop. Her cooktop is $800 more. My kids have long flown the coop. She cooks and bakes daily. I am an empty nester, with an anorexic husband(he really hates to eat!) and don't cook much anymore. Yes, my accumulated cooking time amounts to something, but not like Cj. I bake bread as a new hobby, she bakes for real. When Cj says something about cooking or her appliances, I listen, a lot. So maybe a 27" oven is less than your existing oven in interior dimensions but will function just fine with 2 or 3 sheet pans. think of bluestar, capital, aga, etc., owners with much smaller ovens-who have self smug faces because they have 15 foot high flames! Ask Cj, a real cook, who feeds her family well.

I bought an Electrolux double oven Model#EI30EW45JS2 on 4/27/12. I LOVE this oven and have been very happy, but started to see some rust spots. DON'T ignore these if you get them. I now have a hole which I saw when I started to remove the grates for self-clean. I was frightened and contact Electrolux who first asked, do you have an extended warranty?I don't anymore although purchased an extended warranty when I purchased it. They said they would check to see if they had parts to replace the liner (also rust starting on the upper oven) and after about a week, they called on Saturday to say they could not get the parts. Great. She also told me that they could do nothing until a service person saw it. I asked what would happen if I got a service person in and she said, well, it is no longer under warranty and you would be responsible. Well, thanks a lot since a) an extended warranty doesn't cover rust and b) there aren't parts to fix it anyway. She said they might give me 10% off an oven (probably with a gift card), so I have to spend more than $3000 on a new Electrolux which probably will do that same thing in 6 years and they are being generous giving me $300. DO NOT BUY THIS OVEN. It is so unbelievable discouraging to be treated like this. BTW, I had a Thermador range that is 23 years old and still works perfectly, although it no longer looks perfect. I will now be buying a KitchenAid double oven because Electrolux will not help at all. Beautiful oven, just don't expect it to last for more than a few years. Just think if I had actually used the self-cleaning cycle and my house burned down. SO dangerous.

Concerns are performance, frequency of repairs (hopefully low to none), and ease and cost of getting repairs. This final concern is one that leads my husband to think the GE might be a better choice. I quickly regretted the purchase of a GE oven. (Long story, short: Inconsistent and spotty temps, not holding heat, regaining heat by going into preheat mode and burning the tops of things... It was 'working properly as engineered.' They took my oven back but another avid baker here on the forum experiencing the same issues got no help or refund from GE, even though we were concurrently communicating with the same person.) Just after I bought it, I spoke to my favorite appliance tech (not good timing on my part) and he said they had trouble getting GE to send parts in a timely manner and that they were expensive compared to others. --Just trying to say that GE may be the opposite of what your husband hopes. Elux gets such overwhelming kudos on the appliance forum from members whose opinion I trust, that of your choices, that's where I'd lean. But I've also seen mostly favorable reports from Bosch owners on the current Bosch ovens.

I would not put much weight on capacity when comparing ovens that will fit in the same cutout. It's mainly used as a marketing gimmick and the manufacturers do whatever they can to inflate the number. At the end of the day you have to ask, what would I ever cook that will fit in a 4.8 but not in a 4.2? The only reason I brought up build.com was in case you were just doing research on there and wanted to buy locally, you might have had issues finding the previous GS model, I'm surprised they still have them in stock. I don't know if build.com is good or how they stack up to other online retailers - I've never really done any research on them or their competition since I personally prefer not to buy stuff like this online. YMMV though.

Funny - what wizardnm said - just last night my DH was telling me the Electrolux wall ovens are one of his favorite things in the kitchen (favorite is the induction cooktop). I've found he does way more cooking since we put these in a year ago (we've been married over 30 years).

When I got my heart set on these, he kept saying "those are really expensive, but get what you want - but those are REALLY expensive"

Now he says he's so glad I held my ground. Up until that purchase, the most I ever spent on a cooking appliance (range) was $600, and that was only 7 years ago!

When I was looking I didn't find the Bosch to be all that much cheaper, at least not in the white with the features I wanted - but I do know how it all adds up.

How much cheaper than Electrolux? We recently purchased a Kenmore elite dual convection double wall ovens (both are convection) which are made by Electrolux. We love them. They are Kenmore's top of the line double wall ovens but were less expensive than equivalent "official" Electrolux models by about 15%. If you wait until Sears has one of their very frequent 20%-25% Kenmore appliance sales, you can get an even better deal.

Like MCMesprit advised I am going with Electrolux or Kenmore Elite which by the way just had a 1 week sale on their wall ovens for 50% off. Missed it, but I'm sure Sears will be having another sale soon.

I think Sears might have that 50% sale twice a year, April and October - but I can't swear to that.

I almost got the big, handsome double Kenmore with the knobs-is that the Elite or the Pro-something? - during that April sale, and it wasn't even time for me to buy one yet. It was just such a good deal! But I went to the Kenmore website and read the customer reviews of all their double ovens, and it scared me a little. Plus, some people have had difficulties with Sears service. Of course, you are more likely to find complaints than praise in feedback, so the customer comments may not be representative. After all, MCMesprit loves theirs. I still haven't bought one, but I'm probably going with Electrolux and buying a good extended warranty from my local appliance store, just to hedge my bet.

We shared your concerns re: Kenmore double wall ovens (although issues like overheating during self-cleaning seem to plague a number of brands). The only extended appliance warranty we bought for our kitchen remodel was for the double wall ovens. It's been a few months now and they have worked flawlessly -- including the self-cleaning feature. Still, I'm glad we bought 3 years of protection for the peace of mind.

Re: self-cleaning issues -- they all seem to involve overheating of the electronic circuitry due to the high temps used. Our GC has a theory about this that I haven't read anywhere so I thought I'd pass it along. Overheating according to him can be a result of poor design or venting, but often why one double wall oven overheats and another of the same model does not has to do with what surrounds the ovens. If it is interior wood cabinetry, it doesn't have the thermal capacity to absorb excess heat. In contrast, our pre-existing wall oven surround was brick (which we veneered in stone) located on an exterior wall. Our GC doubted it would ever overheat because the brick is an excellent heat absorber. Just one more thing to think about.
