Tools and Chemicals needed to remove cat urine
Comments (33)My previous roommate's cat peed on the rug my mom bought me as a housewarming gift. It's a 3'x4' dark red shag-style rug. My roommate cleaned it with Nature's Miracle when it first happened, but after a day or so of still smelling the urine, we rolled the rug up and stuck it in the garage (where it sat for 3 or so months). Well, I just recently moved to New Orleans (I left the roommate and her damn cat behind!!) and would love to use my comfy carpet on my new hardwood floors. Problem is, as soon as I unrolled it I could smell the pee -- it stunk up my entire house in literally minutes! I've read through several related threads on this forum and most have been about wall-to-wall carpeting with padding, etc. rather than just an area rug. I'm not sure if I can throw the rug into an industrial laundry mat washer or use a steam cleaner on it since it is a shag-style rug... any ideas? I know I could just toss the rug and save myself the headache, stink, and money -- but I would really prefer to save it if at all possible! Thanks in advance :)...See Moreremoving dog urine smell
Comments (22)Problem 1 : The urine odor. Try saturating the smelly spots with Natures Miracle or Odoban. Let air dry (keep windows open day and night), then have the rug professionally shampooed. Chem Dry comes to mind. Good luck. Problem 2. Regarding the behavior of the Nanny. My daughter is a self-employed nanny. She has plenty of customers because she is darn good and kids love her (and she loves them) . She is reliable, always on time, will clean up a little, make meals and feed kids, changes diapers, has her own transportation (Mom and Dad keep her car running, but she buys her own gas). Anyway, my daughter would never, ever have a pet. She owns a cat that lives with us (Mom and Dad). She had an apartment for a while but her cat remained with us. So, allowing a Nanny to even have a pet is OUT. Tell your sister to be very careful in her next hire. And my daughter's in New York, and not willing to re-locate, so I guess she's out....See MoreFirst day in new house - dog smell in carpet
Comments (20)I done renovation work in some homes where pets had soiled the carpet. Professional carpet cleaning should help. If the underboards are badly soaked they will have to be treated after the carpets are pulled up. Bleach and water applied with a paint roller works wonders! If cleaning the carpet fails have a look at carpet remnants. While it won't be the perfect kind and color it will be new and clean. If you are careful not to slice off a finger (my dad's advice to me once) it can be cut with a utility knife and simply laid in place. Again not the best installation but fairly inexpensive and much better then living with stinky carpet. Part of the joy of being a homeowner is fixing things. Check out the link to doityourself website! Free articles on everything from wiring to cleaning windows. I had never been taught electrical wiring and that site gave me enough information to be confident that I could do the job the right way. Just becareful as you could become one of the glassy-eyed masses wandering around Home Depot dreaming of the next six things you can do to the homestead. Dolly dog whizzed on my carpet and I noticed it was much worse then any kitty accident. I had to buy my own carpet cleaning machine with special pet odor soap... which has been handy as I stupidly dribble coffee on my carpet fairly often. Just one of those cheapo machines but it is easy and does a fair job... better then I can do with a scrub brush and rags. Alas... I have about 1000 sq.ft. of light blue carpet that is 12 years old. Getting to be time to rip it out and lay some new. : ) lyra Here is a link that might be useful: do it yourself...See MoreHelp! Loki Just Got Sprayed by Skunk!!!
Comments (18)Thanks Caroline. I will have to make up a kit just in case there is a next time which I hope there won't be. LOL I had everything but the Hydrogen Peroxide last night. I usually keep it on hand because if Loki eats something he shouldn't I give him some of that to make him throw up whatever he ate. I need to replace the empty bottle. After talking to Heather on the phone I called my vet and he said not to worry about Loki's eyes and I did the right thing by rinsing them with cool water. He said the skunk spray may irritate his eyes but won't make him go blind. I was outside brushing Loki to remove any dead fur and Paul showed up after his Dr's appointment. LOL He asked if I had my shower yet and I told him I had 5 showers since this happened. I wanted him to take me to Pet Smart way across town but he took me to the Pet store a few streets over instead where I buy my dog food. I asked if they had Nature's Miracle and they told me to try this other stuff instead because they feel it works better. This product is called Nok Out and can be used on every type of odour to remove it. I had never heard of either product so I decided to try the knock out and if it doesn't work will go back for Nature's Miracle like PK suggested. I sprayed Loki down and massaged it onto his skin, I sprayed his bed, furniture and curtains and the throw rugs and then I sprayed all the rooms in the house. I The label said ot take odours out of a room to put some in a cool vaporizer or humidifier with some water and keep it going for 4 hours. I just put some in a bowl and put it on the mantle to see if it works. LOL I noticed when I was in the pet store I could smell the skunk especially when I opened my purse. I sprayed that too when I got home. My eyes are stinging a bit but I can live with it. Raining now and I don't want to close my windows. LOL I also bought Loki a new collar since his took a direct hit and a new lead that matches. I like it because it is reflective and we do a lot of walking at night. I am going to relax a bit and make myself a pot of coffee and have my breakfast/lunch and then maybe take a nap. I am exhausted. LOL Thanks everyone for your help. I was in a panic mode last night not knowing what to do. I just remember Flamey using something other than tomato juice when her dog got skunked. Anne...See More- 18 years ago
