Northern NJ Tile retailer recommendations

Hi all,

We would like to try a new tile retailer, other than the one we've been using. It's an extremely small shop and the selection is limited. Has anyone had any favorable experiences, with some of the brick & mortar establishments, in the NNJ area. We don't mind traveling. Thanks ...

Stratta Tile in Hawthorne NJ!!! (Hawthorne is next to Ridgewood, Wycoff, Glen Rock) I can't say enough good things about them.

They have the most amazing selection I've ever seen, the people who work their know their tile, and are incredibly nice and helpful. Even the store is stunning. And their prices are terrific - they worked easily within my beer-level budget.

Tell them Lisa sent you.

I've bought a ton of stuff there, and I swear I wish I had another bathroom to tile just to shop there again.

Just over the border in NY (Rockland Cty--Bardonia); Greene and Roth. Ask for Rick or Annette.

Vince, We did a 76" H 3/8" thick frameless shower door; starfire glass with clear shield, with the contemporary handle (slightly higher priced than the "standard" handle). The cost seemed consistant with prices we'd read and heard (here on this forum and elsewhere). We used Glasscrafters because H-D uses them. We are repeat customers and have a very good rapport with our salesperson, so we knew we would get as good a price (with GC) as possible (pricing/payment is done through H-D). Also, if there were or are any problems with the door, we know that Sean will make sure that it is taken care of promptly. Having spoken with the people at GC on the phone, and having seen firsthand the care with which the installers installed our door, we feel confident that they stand behind their product/installation completely, as well.

mightyanvil, The contract template is the same as the contractor is using with his other clients, supposely reviewed by his attorney (not sure how long ago that review took place). As far as the NJ law, I called Consumer Affairs office and sure enough there is no such regulation. Unfortunately, we may be stuck on this one. I am very upset, we like his work and want to have good working relationship with him. And here we have a disagreement over the contract terms before the project even started. But here is another question. Is it as bad as it appears to be? In addition to the payment schedule, the contract says exactly this: "If any portion of work remains incomplete only the dollar value amount of the incomplete work may be withheld until that work is completed". The way it was explained to me is, for example, if there are five tiles left undone in a bathroom because we ran out of material, we still have to pay for the tile work except for the five tiles. Of couse not what we want to hear. However, I wonder, if we do sign the contract which includes these terms, is this how we have to interpret it? I would like to interpret it in the above example as "bathroom renovation is not complete" instead of "five tiles not installed". And my objective is not to make him complete by certain date which I know would be impossible, but to prevent a situation when we have a bunch of items to be finished all over the house and he doesn't show up for days or weeks. Reputable NJ Pool Restorer

I'm hoping that someone might be able to suggest some reputable pool restorers in Northern NJ. I'm looking for someone to do Pebbletec re-surface, tiles, and coping (the pool currently doesn't have coping, just a concrete curb flush with the sides of the pool.) I also need to have the existing bluestone decking re-seated and re-grouted and would prefer a company that could handle that too. Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your home is gorgeous! I spent a year renovating a 1939 petite colonial (1700 sf). In my case, I had to add a kitchen as the old one was tiny had badly renovated in the 1990s. A few workflow tips in your newer post with the kitchen. I'd put the prep sink at the range end of your island, instead of at the dining room entrance end. Think about it -- you chop, then have to carry the food to the range. Please rethink that desk in your kitchen. I've had "work/message centers" as built-ins in previous homes, but here in my new old house, I'm using a piece of furniture -- a drop-front secretary where I can close up the mess when guests arrive, but sit there and work (printer in the bottom). You can put the secretary in any room. Where your desk is located, it's not a drop station for bringing in the mail, schoolbooks, etc. For aesthetics, please try to make the kitchen fit the spirit of the house. White cabinets would likely fit it better than stained wood. Consider having at least a few glass-front upper cabinets. If you turned that desk space into storage, you wouldn't need to line the walls with upper cabinets. It's amazing what you can fit into a "hutch" look that would fit the aesthetics of your home. I had hutches flanking my farmsink in my previous home. One for pantry items, the other for dishes. My current 1939 home new renovation -- hutches -- the one of the left of my paneled fridge is for dishes and the one one the right side is filled with food items stored in canisters and containers. My kitchen is only 12x12 as the dimensions are in keeping with the original room sizes. The dining room is 12x12 and the living room is 12 x 21.

Thanks for the responses. We will try these stores. When we built our house (1984), we actually used Greene & Roth, for all our floor tile selections. I pass by them, everyday.

G&R has a nice selection, and they took very good care of us. Our tile guy (Rick's brother actually, though we knew our tile guy first) did much (most? all?) of the tile work in their upstairs showroom.

PS and you can't beat the proximity to Rockland Bakery! :)

Thanks Cat .. We were in the Bakery, yesterday. Bagels were coming out. Rolls plucked off of the conveyer belt. One (1) - Chinese cookie munched on. Doesn't get any better ... We love to take visitors there.

DH was there yesterday, early-ish evening. He brought home a baguette and a raisin challah. :)

An update .. We spent ALOT of time, with Annette at Greene & Roth. Alot of time. For a (relatively) small space, G&R packs in alot of product. Most of the displays are on big flip cards, for easy browsing. We chose a Sant'Augustino (Earth Collection) tile floor. We also chose Cesarstone (Linen) for our bath shelves and floor saddle. The Cesarstone material was fabricated by Marble & Granite, in Ridgefield Park, NJ. Our 60" vanity is a Strasserworks (Chocolate Cherry) unit. We're not going to make a final decision on the countertop, until everything else is in place. Kohler sinks and tub, with Grohe Allure fixtures. The dumpster arrives on Monday and the death/destruction of our bathroom will begin shortly after. We're stoked ...

We were very impressed with the amount of stuff they have on display and is available to order. They were terrific about bringing in samples, finding out about availability, or "do-ability" and special ordering stuff they don't normally carry in stock, too.

We love Annette, she is such a sweetheart and was so helpful (as was Rick--we love him, too!), throughout the entire process.

It's exciting when the demolition begins--makes it really real! Good luck!!!

We are currently using LaRaj tile in Roselle park. They have been great to work with. Lance is the sales guy. We also went to Wayne Tile, they have a few locations, and their selection is great.

We have done business with Blair Tile in Blairstown, NJ
Dorothy, the owner is very helpful and we have always done well with her suggestions.
