Really cute teacher gift idea!

Saw this on a blog and just had to send all of you to see it. I'm sure teachers get so many gifts--is this something any of you would have liked? I've been told that the favorite teacher gift is a "gift card". Luvs

That should be a terrific teacher gift! Next to gift cards, LOL. But seriously, this is a wonderful idea I think.

That is cute! It would be nice along the window sill in the classroom. I had plants for years there, used to make cuttings for the kids in milk containers..Then we weren't allowed to have them anymore due to the fact that there is mold in the dirt! So many rules!
And yes, Karen, those gift cards are wonderful..one size fits all!

I am a teacher and love getting gifts no matter how small or silly. It feels so good to be appreciated. I am a music teacher, so I don't get large presents or often, but usually 5 or six kids will bring something and it makes my day. My favorites include a heartfelt note written by the kid or parent, HEALTHY food gifts like a soup mix or fruit, gift cards to half price books (they go further there), cool magnets for my whiteboard, a nice pen or other practical classroom items. One mom embroidered a tote bag with my name and that was really cool. Another bought a bunch of inexpensive plants from Home Depot (think 6-packs) potted them in baby food jars and tied on a pretty ribbon. She had one for the librarian, principal, etc. and they said Thanks for helping me grow. Not very expensive or time consuming, but so special. No, I don't feel badly towards kids who bring nothing, that is really the norm, but a cute little gift will cheer me up and probably make me a better teacher that day. Honestly, though, when a child draws a picture of me holding his hand - well, that is just as special and uplifting.

I would think twice about spending that kind of money on a mug for a teacher. I know many teachers, both elementary and secondary, and all of them say that they receive too many mugs at Christmas. One teacher I know received 5 from her students one year. A much more appreciated gift would be a gift certificate to Office Depot or a teacher store or a book store. A Catholic High School where one of my children went had a school wide collection for the teacher's Christmas gift. The money was totaled up and every employee from the principal to the part time janitor received some money -- all an equal amount. It was done by the PTA. The teacher's loved it. Another school had the room mom take up a collection, and the teacher received a very nice gift certificate to the mall. She was thrilled!

This is a little late for this year but I wanted to share the response to the teacher appreciation gift I made for a 1st grade niece. She is always "designing" things for herself for us to embroidery. Last fall she came up with her idea but it didn't get stitched out until much later. It was the name of her school on the first row, elementary school on the next row, 5 stick kids on the 3rd row & "a fun place to learn" on the 4th row. She wore her's to school around spring break & her teacher commented that she needed one of those. She also had some flip flops she'd tied gingham check strips of fabric onto to match the pants she wore with her shirt. The teacher was admiring those too. As it got closer to school ending, she wanted to do flip flops for her herself & me make her a shirt. She gave it to her the day before school ended & she wore it the last day. I picked my niece up when school let out & she had a note with names & phone numbers of teachers that wanted to purchase one for themselves. Her teacher told her to give the note to her Mom so it wouldn't do for me to get it. Her Mom got with me on a price & started calling the teachers. She spoke with one she knew personally & she told her that all the first grade teachers had seen it on their hall, but when they went to lunch, the poor teacher couldn't eat for answering questions & standing up to model her outfit. She told her they were having a final teacher's meeting the following morning & she would pass the info on to those who may not have seen the gift. So ever who wanted to know what everybody was doing????? My answer is "Embroiderying shirts for school teachers".

Slight tangent: she has tried for *three* *years* to get a HS history teaching job??!! Oh dear, this has me very worried. My own daughter graduated in May with a history major and secondary teaching certification and her dream is to teach exactly that. She has been shocked and dismayed that although she has been diligently applying all over, even hand carrying personalized application packets directly to schools and has at least had several interviews, she hasn't gotten a job. School starts here a week from Monday and she is feeling devastated...I'm puzzled that the field seems so incredibly difficulty to enter. I didn't dream she wouldn't be hired somewhere by this point. She says once school starts, and she doesn't get a permanent position (which seems likely), she will try to substitute but at this point we're worried nobody will even deign to give her that chance. And she graduated cum laude from a well regarded university! Is it really that tough to get hired as a teacher? Seems all one hears is that the pay is bad, teachers are overworked, disrespected etc, leaving the profession in droves....so why is it impossible to get a job? Semi-facetious, but only semi. Kathleen, isn't it funny that things that were done for years and years, and all of us survived it, suddenly were not allowed anymore? I know at the banks where I worked, we used to serve iced tea and coffee along with cookies on Fridays in our lobby--then they said we couldn't do that anymore unless the cookies were purchased in individually wrapped packaging. (We always bought them at Costco.)

These would be nice for the teacher to take home anyway--or you could fill it with lotions and such instead of a plant. ;o)

Karen, I think they would be cute for gifts for my friends/neighbors too, don't you? Actually could decorate them for any occassion I think. I like finding cute easy ideas.

That is a cute idea! I agree that some schools and other workplaces, can make it so hard these days to add personal warmth to a classroom or office.
Because so many of my close friends are teachers, I heard early on to avoid anything that says "teacher" on it. My bestfriend had a large box filled with "teacher" ornaments, mugs, suncatchers, etc. Gift cards are much appreciated, though. A heartfelt letter is another special, treasured gift.
Along those lines, my friend who's a grade school counselor joked one day years ago, that while teachers are always remembered, she'd only gotten two gifts her entire career. After that, I've always made sure that I gave our own school counselor and my DD's bus driver a small gift at Christmas and at the end of the school year.

When I retired I donated 100 mugs and other teacher related things..! The thrift shop said it would take them 10 yrs to get rid of it. I also left a box of mugs in the Faculty room for new teachers and those who broke their mugs.
Luvs, it would be a cute hostess gift, planted with some herbs would be nice too! I am not a fan of indoor plants..I have 2, and that's my limit.
In school though, I had tons of them! Good to teach the unit on plants!
Lynn, I always made sure to remember all the teachers, music, art, etc as well as the school nurse.
Something small but useful, and nothing with # 1 teacher on it..:)
