Induction Cooktop Owners, what did you buy and why?

Hello GW,

I am having a very difficult time selecting what 36" induction unit to purchase for my new kitchen.

I have looked into burner layout, rimmed or not, wattage, price, but I just can't select one over another.

Could you please share what you purchased, why and any review you have?

GE Monogram 30" 2 years ago. I liked the high power of the big burner, the layout of the burners, and we got a great deal on GE. No regrets.

Thanks! I am getting Mongram wall ovens, so if I purchased this model and a Monogram hood I would be eligible for a rebate.

Does your cooktop have blue rings? The model on the Monogram website has blue instead of the typical white painted burner rings. I am not sure I like that blue.

But if I could save $1K due to rebates, I sure could learn to love that blue ring!

Just wanted to second the information on longevity (or not) of these things-- We have hard water--and have gone through two of these things in 10years. I am told no matter how much you spend, that without softening the water, 5 years is a high score. (my second one just bit the dust last month) I have loved the convenience--and will most likely get yet a third one when I update my kitchen this year. For a nominal cost it has been great over the years---from water to quickly heat baby bottles in the early years, to tea and coffee and other instant foods....and I've even used the scalding water for cleaning from time to time. I do not use a filter. I would spend as little as possible and go into it knowing you'll probably only get a couple of years out of it. (our most recent one was an insinkerator). My husband swore when it broke last month that he'd never install another one of these "pieces of !@#$" BUT a week later he said in passing---"I kind of miss the instant hot" So there you have it!

Miele Induction Cooktop...? for owners

No direct answers to your questions. However, I did play wiht a wok on another induction unit. On the postive front, it heated it up like the was no tomorrow. The water that was in there boiled very fast even though the surface area of the wok was rather small. On the other hand, anything 1 inch above the bottom was cool to touch. This got us worried as it meant that most of the cooking got done on the very buttom of the wok. So in our kitchen, we are getting a dedicated work induction hub. This allows the wok to go under the top surface and be surrounded by the induction coil. The handle and top of the wok will still be cool which is fine. But cooking surface extends above the bottom. As for large hub being in the center, I am not a fan of that design. We cook on the left front burner and want that to be most powerful so that we can cook on it most of the time, and see what is there. That location also makes it more optimal to stir than reaching further back.

I've been cooking on my Diva 36 inch for 5 months and really like it. I've had great results. It's very powerful and I have to remember to keep the heat on lower settings in order not to burn my food. It delivers more heat than I had expected. I only put it on full power if I need to quickly bring something to a boil. Then, I turn it down to actually cook what I intend to cook. It brings water to a boil quickly. I'm so happy I don't have to clean grill grates...did that for years and hated it. I'm very pleased with the Diva so far. I bought a large set of Al clad pans at Macy's for $420. I think the best set of pans that I found were at William Sonoma. They were the brushed nickel pans made for induction. However, they were around $800 for the set. I also picked up a few no name brands pots from TJ Max and Home Goods. They seems to work just as well as the all clad for boiling pasta etc. I definitely think it's worth the investment to buy a really good non-stick frying pan. Macy's also has a set of pans made specifically for induction that were priced less than $300.

Hi there. I'm one of the ones that "try_hard" was probably talking about up there; talking my head off about how much I love induction - especially my Viking. I do have the hybrid, because I was chicken. Plus, the price was better than full induction on the Viking. I chose Viking because of all the talk here about power sharing, and I also wanted the knobs. Others have mentioned the humming noise. The Viking's isn't bad at all. It's actually pretty welcoming since I can tell when the burner is on/off without looking. I did see a demo, but I didn't do it and it wasn't for me (at least not until I bought it). I was in the appliance store so much that I may as well have been getting a paycheck. I would lean over and watch other customers as they came in and wanted a demo or learned about induction. My model was on live display. I knew so much about the store and the sales staff that I would bet who would buy and who wouldn't. I'll never feel the same way walking into a store again, for fear someone was doing the same thing to me - LOL!!. One thing - I raved so much about much I loved my induction cooktop, the sales staff started using my comments in their pitch. Not sure if you have made a decision or not, but whichever you choose, I think you will love it. As far as cookware, I've heard so many here say, the cheaper the better, as long as it is stainless. I found out that the every-day, middle-of-the-road Cook's Essentials from QVC work (didn't think they would). They look pretty good too, and have non-stick inside. I have a few Emerilware and love it. I'll probably get one or two All-Clad, or another higher level. The one thing I'm looking for is something that is easier to clean inside. hmmm, we'll see on that one. You can check with your brand's website and see who has a live one set up. I bought a GE profile 2 years ago. I bought it because of the price, the high wattage, the appearance(rimless, subtle speckle design)and the size of the largest element. I passed on the Monogram(it would actually have been a bit cheaper)because of the blue rings.

Windcrest. It was cheap (good sale) and powerful enough. Also had good clearance beneath it. Almost went with Miele because it has a lot of features (like timers that will turn off the burners) but realized I wouldn't use anything like that. Miele (and Gaggenau) do seem to have the most features if you want it to do more than cook at different levels. :)

I went with the 36" Miele and have been very happy with it. Timers are great, up to 24 levels of control, good layout. Rim is very tasteful and not obtrusive. Only thing I may change is add a design to the top similar to Wolf's on it to hide any of the inevitable scratches that will occur. Of course, induction is very easy to keep clean, so other than some tiny scratches, it looks great most of the time.

Gaggenau. Love the knob. I needed a minimum of 17 power levels, and wanted the true timers. It's also very tolerant of non-flat cookware. Plus, it didn't require a lot of empty cabinetry space.

Second choice was Miele. That's a great one.

I don't have the blue rings because I have the mirror finish on the cooktop.

Although I don't have it installed yet, I went with a Miele. I wanted the programming capability for each burner, the ability to have 17 levels if I so choose, the nicely sized burners and the power. I also have a Miele vacuum that has performed flawlessly for the last 14 years, and I felt very comfortable with the reliability of the brand. The smooth, shiny top gave me pause, but after seeing that the cooktop in the Miele showroom had remained pristine after being used for years put paid to that worry. After playing with it, I was sold.

Enjoy your new cooktop, whichever one you pick!

I haven't purchased yet but planning on Miele. I like what I have read. I am also getting a Miele chef oven.
