Please help - need advice on trouble with GE s/s fridge
Comments (6)Hi, dadoes. I know you're right about the model number, but I didn't have it handy when I posted before. Hub called the national 'hot line' GE number and talked to a rep (he did have the model number), who said a repairman couldn't get here before Wednesday to diagnose the problem, let alone fix it. So I hit the yellow pages - yes, did it the old-fashioned way - and found a company which sends out repairmen 24/7 (what a novel idea), and also charged a LOT less than GE's quote. We were pleasantly surprised at the total for dx and repair, which was far less than what we were expecting. The guy was really good. Not only did he fix the fridge but he talked to hub the whole time, explaining everything to him. At times they worked together. This was invaluable for hub; this is exactly what he likes to do, as he always learns a lot. The problem was the thermistor. It had gone bad and quit working. The guy had to dismantle the freezer side and found a solid block of ice behind a large panel. We had to leave the freezer open for 24 hr. (thankfully, we have a separate large freezer and could put the food and ice in it). We turned it back on at the right time, and it has worked beautifully ever since. Now the temp in the fridge is 35. The milk is nice and cold, and we don't have to worry about spoiled food. The ice maker is churning out ice once again. Thanks again to you guys. Even though it turned out like it did, I really, really appreciate your input. Blessings to you both. :)...See MoreLiebherr repairs in Manhattan?
Comments (4)Good point, Kitchenkat. I'm now remembering that when I had icing problems with my first Liebherr fridge (since replaced), the tech inspected the base grill to make sure it wasn't being clogged by dust, etc. At that time, he advised me to occasionally remove the grill cover and vacuum in that area. Not saying that's the problem here, but it's a simple thing to check out which doesn't even call for a service visit. Good luck!...See MoreWill this "true counter depth" Liebherr fridge fit?
Comments (7)DamaskDi -- I owned a 30" Liebherr refrigerator with bottom freezer that was enclosed in a partition against a wall. The space had less clearance on one side than your space. The fridge has 0 clearance doors and opened against the wall. However, to be absolutely sure you want to check the specification sheet for the refrigerator. That will give you accurate information -- the information you need, not inaccurate speculation. I've linked the Design Guide below. Look for the model number. The fridge depth is 24-1/4. For semi-built in it will need some clearance at the top for ventilation -- they will tell you how much to leave but as I recall it is a minimum of 2 or 3 inches. If you have any doubts, call the company and ask. In any event I would call and ask them about installing a refrigerator next to ovens (usually not recommended but often seen) and be sure it is done properly. Check the location needed for the plug and the ice maker as well. There is a note about door clearance which will be needed to open the crispers inside. The doors have a 145 degree swing. Do yourself a favor and use the spec sheet -- there are other design guides as well. I would always call the company to verify those and be sure nothing has changed. Comments (21)"I was grown up to believe that german technology was second to none." Geeze, I wished you could have taught the 2 mercedes Benzes that I owned that!!!!! After about 10 years of keeping the Service Dept of the Mercedes Benz dealership well financed, I finally got tired of that, and bought a 1993 Cadillac Allante. It has seen the Cadillac Dealer service dept once, and that was to buy and install a battery for it. I have a friend that still buys Mercedes, and after 70,000 miles gets rid of them as He says that's when the repair expenses start to really escalate! I did buy a Miele DW, back in 2006, as it was the ONLY DW, back in 2006 that had the 3rd tray, (cutlery rack). It is rarely used, and has been trouble free, whilst my Electrolux Oven, speed oven, Induction cooktop and wine fridge are used all the time, and are alto trouble free. My Jenn-air fridge has only needed 1 repair about $350, since 2006, You cant even talk to an SZ repair man for that (yeah I'm exaggerating just a little) and I doubt you would be able to get much repaired on a Liebherr fridge for that price either. Moral here, is there are more makes of fridges other than SZ or Liebher. Take a look at some of the Whirlpool products, (Kitchen-Aid, Jenn-air, Whirlpool), Look at some of the GE's. When I had my rentals, I just bought "garden variety fridges", and I never had any problems with them, certainly not the kinds of problems that you see with this new "esoteric Expensive Stuff"!
