Do our glass showers look green??
Comments (30)Standard glass has a greenish hue because of its iron content, the iron in the glass makes it look green. Starphire is a low iron glass manufactured by Vitro (formerly PPG), but the name has become somewhat synonymous for low iron glass in general; kind of like asking for coke when wanting a cola. When viewed from the edge, Starphire appears slightly cyan to blue depending on lighting. This is intentional and is due to adding cobalt to the raw glass formula which helps to ensure visual uniformity, and it's also a very appealing color. Most other glass companies, but not all, do manufacture their own low iron glass with edge color ranging from crystal clear (in a product called krystal klear) to a slight yellowish tint, but only starphire (that I am aware of) has the slightly blue edge color. Possibly because Starphire is the most widely known, and is often specifically requested, it's also one of the more, if not the most, expensive option. And while commercial glass companies and glaziers have access to options other than Starphire, I suspect that Starphire is pretty much a given for residential low iron projects, but cost and availability might vary considerably depending at least in part on location and fabricator and/or dealer volume. Also since Starphire is somewhat synonymous with low iron glass, I suspect that it's entirely possible to ask for "starphire" by name, but the glass used in the final product, while still low iron, might be something other than actual Starphire, once again based on location and fabricator and/or dealer volume.....See MoreAnyone using regular white bulbs in a clear glass fixture?
Comments (8)Thanks, chelseahasrouni! I assume you mean they'd bother you from an aesthetic perspective, huh? That's what I was figuring. The reason I was steering away from Edison bulbs is I imagine the light output just doesn't look as bright as a regular bulb, but maybe a clear glass incandescent would be a good compromise between the two. I was hoping to go with an LED light though. They make nice Edison-style LEDs but not ones that look like regular clear incandescents from what I've seen....See Moreregular vs low iron vs starphire glass for shower doors
Comments (5)Starphire is a brand name for Low Iron (PPG now Vitro). The fact that a dealer is going to charge you one price for low iron and another for the same thing but the Starphire brand would make me quite skeptical. As far as whether Low Iron is a benefit, that is a personal opinion, but the tile will definitely pick up the green hue in regular glass over low iron....See MoreHow the regular forum has changed
Comments (104)I seldom look at GW's Home Decorating forum since the Design Dilemmas cross-posting started a few months ago. Going there now, I looked for threads that were posted only in Home Decorating on the theory that most of the pros only read Design Dilemmas. There are plenty of threads that are only posted in Home Decorating, and they seem to be pretty much PRO-free. I recognize many of the OPs and commenters as GW people. I think you may feel that it's more like the good old GW days if you pretend Design Dilemma doesn't exist. When we merged over two years ago, we knew Design Dilemmas was there but we didn't go seek them out, so why seek them out now just because they are on the same list as our Home Decorating threads? There should be plenty to keep you busy in just the Home Decorating threads while keeping your disgust at the silly DD posts and obnoxious pros at bay....See Moreathensmomof3
