My large above-door ledge is starting to feel "off" ...
Comments (65)I actually like the horse the best. I have these in my home: 2 clerestory windows and 2 flat spaces above the 2 closets in the entry. We choose to ignore them. We did try plants once; however the sun and heat up there made short shrift of them. i like the horse because it adds a touch of whimsy, relates to your horse painting, therefore makes the area look more like an area to display an additional part of the collection, and looks less contrived. Be aware, though, that sun and heat will damage anything you put up there, so don't use anything too precious to you....See MoreShould I forego uppers above my stove area? Design pics included!
Comments (27)@benjesbride Yes, the 11'1" will be open to the dining room area(once we knock down that portion of the wall). On the other side of that 3'5" wall is just space that belongs to the living room.. And the the door on the 10'6" wall near the bump is the entrance to the kitchen from the hallway.. The second door should have been removed, sorry for the confusion. It's really a shallow pantry (12") with bifold doors that we're going to close off in order to place cabinets besides the fridge. You're right in that it is tight.. It's not showing on the rendering, but I wanted the island counter to be 3'X6' including the one foot overhang. The space between the island to the bump will be 3'7"... the space between the island and dishwasher is 3'3" and, island to oven is 3'1. I read that minimum passageways through a kitchen is 3' so I was hoping it would work? @mayflowers I'll have to check if it's feasible to move the stove over, since the hood vent will also have to move. That would be ideal though.. If I couldn't move the stove over, would it still be better to still reduce pantry width to at least have longer counter space between the stove and fridge? @emilyam819 here is a drawing with the island rotated.. I left about 3' between island and counters.. and you can see it's quite tight with that bump in the wall. Foregoing seating would make it work, but I really wanted to have seating. @dyhgarden Your kitchen is gorgeous! I love the clean, white look you have going on (this is what I also hope to achieve); it looks so roomy with your high ceilings not to mention that entire wall of built-ins! The patisserie stand is a really nice touch as well. I really like that it's free standing and so I wouldn't have to make holes in my backsplash :) Is your backsplash a hexagon pattern? Thank you so much for sharing!...See MoreShould I put lower cabinets in my pantry? Help me think it through pls
Comments (18)"Veering: I think Costco , SAMs, etc can be a quick trip to a fat farm, or a poor house," Yes, if you're an impulse shopper and/or haven't done your homework regarding what works and what doesn't in your family. Just like shopping anywhere, IMO. I love Costco even in a household of 1 person, but I know what I want and don't want, what I'll use and won't use, etc. I buy things that will store well and I will use up (things like dishwasher detergent, garbage bags, contact lens solution, body lotion, batteries, etc). Outsized packaging is something I figured out easily how to deal with back when I had a little kitchen with awkward shelves (2 kitchens ago), and I decant many things (from white vinegar to baking flour) into reusable jars. To each his/her own -- I'm more likely to be an impulse buyer at Home Depot than I am at Costco....See MoreShould I tile up to the ceiling above vanity?
Comments (16)I have had this window for 17yrs with a shower curtain protecting it until now. No mold or condensation as I am particular on cleaning and keeping water out. Since your old solution worked... I was suggesting that the taped plastic is going to be a problem because condensation will collect behind it (and not be able to dry readily) and where you have water & warmth, you're creating a perfect environment for mold & mildew. (Unless you remove the plastic & tape after every shower.) With your shower curtain solution, at least air can circulate around & behind the curtain. How much of a problem? Depends on where you live. Arizona? Great. (I live in wet & humid central WI so mold, mildew, algae is a constant battle, inside & out.)...See Moreweedyacres
