Can sheets of old tin ceiling be put back up?
Comments (6)Having installed a large tin ceiling and cornice (1600 sq ft)I would say that you could probably make a decent job of it. Tin is very thin and malleable. If there are bends, they will flatten out when it's nailed back up. Creases are another matter. They will need to be flattened with hammers and dollys. The edges will be the easiest to deal with, as they get worked anyway as you install. A wood block run along the seam should mostly flatten the beaded edge. In your case, it's probably advisable to install over plywood so you can add extra nails wherever they are needed. More worrisome is the surface condition of the old material. If the old paint doesn't come off in sheets, it will certainly begin to come off in small chips. But you can clean them up now while they are in a prone state. I hope you removed more than you need, because there is certain to be some loss during the re-install. Casey...See MoreWhat do I do with two ceiling-tiled ceilings?
Comments (9)I had two issues in my house and I have done the following... I did foam board in a hallway because it is going to be torn out in a year or two. I put a thin coat of joint compound on it and painted. I nailed the foam board up like you would dry wall. Found the foamboard at the dollar store. I mixed a gallon of dark brown paint to joint compound and got a brush from the dollar store and burshed it on in a swril design like the walls. My walls were a light tan and mixing the dark paint in the white JC made it a light tan ceiling. Both of these fixes were done last March so it has been a year and a half and everything still looks good. The ceiling in the kitchen I do not understand what your question about "cleaning". I used ceiling paint then painted the color I wanted. They sell paint now that has both the undercoat and paint in one. So you do not have to do two steps. I have not tried it so I cannot say for sure it will work if there is a lot of oil and dirt....See MoreCeiling moulding in bedroom, what type?
Comments (4)I don't think I would put molding there. With the change in plane of the wall, you could paint the ceiling white without the use of molding. Or you could use the same color as the walls, and it still will look like a different color than the walls. I believe that bed molding is designed to go on two wall planes that are at a 90 degree angle. Will it work on a greater angled location?...See MoreHigh ceilings, where to put ceiling fan?
Comments (12)Are you replacing all the drywall? Moving electrical gets quite difficult if not. You may need to rewire all the way to the switch and also install a hefty box - fan rated and all. From the angle of the shot, the current placement looks too close to the windows even with a downrod. But either way, your pics don't really tell enough about the room to give a good answer....See Morenewhomeowner2011a
