How would you tile floor of this vintage bathroom?

Help, please! Our contractor is ready to lay down the tiles in our bathroom, so this weekend is THE deadline for making our decision for choosing tiles. We have wavered back and forth on this...marble...travertine...ceramic...

We are renovating a 90-year-old house and want to retain some of the vintage look..but I'm NOT loving those traditional hex or basketweave patterns (could it be because it reminds me of the grungy apartment I lived in back in my '20s?)

I have beautiful vintage inspired fixtures. I like subway tiles. What can I put on the floor? I love the look of polished marble tile, but this is a no no. So...what would you do?

There are lots of vintage inspired floors that you can do that aren't necessarily lots of little pieces. Bill V shows a bathroom with a honed marble floor on the diagonal with a thin dark border and then a polished marble border beyond that. You can search around a bit to find his website and take a look at it.

Also you might want to search back on claire de luna - she shows a similar look with terrazzo tiles and a border in a creamy and warm rather than grey and cool palette. This could be pulled off with travertine and coordinating ceramic and stone for a vintage but not a slave to period feel.

You could also do a checkerboard with larger format tiles - either a subtle tone on tone checkerboard in earthtones or black and white for something more graphic that would pop. There are many ceramics out there that either look like stone or not but have colors that would look great together in a checkerboard.

I love the look of polished marble tile, but this is a no no. So...what would you do?

Honed with a polished border and accent perimeter stripe.

amysrq- great idea for black and white, but we have that theme going on in the vintage bath that is in my oldests new room (back in the day it was the maids room) so she is in the room over the garage with her own bath which has black tile half way up the wall with black and white tile floor. I did see a pic in a magazine with BIG black and white paisley wallpaper accented with hot pink towel and decor with a white shower curtain that was monogramed in black. no green- nice idea never thought of that either for the bath, funny i had a color combo like that in a guest room, moss green walls and navy blue toile spread and plates on the walls with blue accents. Ive got to check the navy with this particular green in this bath

If the accent tiles had been painted in place, the artist would probably have gotten paint on the grout. I don't see any. So although I don't know for sure, I'd guess that those are actual production accent tiles from the 1970s or so, maybe even into the 1980s. That kind of whimsical art was popular back then, kind of like psychedelic motifs were in the 1960s. The flowered tiles look like they were supposed to be used with more tiles below them. The other tiles would have had stems and leaves to complete the flower image. Similarly, maybe the "squiggle" tiles were designed to form a border of sorts when used with similar or identical tiles to the left and right. This is admittedly speculation, as I don't recall ever seeing those particular tiles in anyone else's home. Someday, a future generation will be posting to ask how they can tear out and replace the "dated" design features that are popular in houses today. :)

Imagine walking over broken glass while in the shower....now imagine you paid good money for such an experience. Glass is not acceptable on a floor. The tiles you show are backsplash/decorative tile....It would take a tile specializing in GLASS tile (there is special thinset/colour used behind glass; special tools to cut them; special grout to finish them). Before you purchase anything expensive, please show photos of the water proofing and the 'water test' for the shower pan. Once that's done, you can spend more money on the pretty stuff. As L_W_O points out, the water proofing has yet to be done.

I would call that color coral not peach. Coral is super trendy right now! Look for a really good fashionable shower curtain which incorporates coral, black and white and use that to inform your wall paint color choices - you could even take the shower curtain to the paint store and have someone help you One other idea is find that exact color of coral on a paint strip (or as close to it as possible) and then pick out a shade thats a couple of shades lighter for the walls. That way the room is tied together (called monochromatic color scheme). A realtor told me that it doesnt have to be any one particular color, it just needs to bethe RIGHT color. Meaning that the colors in the house all fit together and look harmonious. Its impossible to predict what some future owner wants. Spend your time /energy getting it super clean instead of decorating (aside from paint/curtain)

If you don't like the smaller tiles, I think the example above would be a nice alternative. I'd probably say using terazzo or anything in that family would take away from the vintage style you're after.

If keeping a total period appropriate look isn't a necessity, you could also do a more modern layout of tile (maybe long rectangular marble cuts offset) using a period appropriate material like honed marble.

Terrazzo is fabulously vintage - just check bungalow baths for inspiration. Also as I said, claire de luna's bath. Not only does it not take away from the vintage style, it's part of what makes it.

Thank you to all who responded. We went out today and chose honed marble for the floor with mini-subway tiles for the bath surround. I'm happy, he's happy. Just need to determine best cleaning products..mmm..wonder if anyone's posted about eco-sensitive cleaning products for natural stone material..will have to check that out.

Actually, you have no choice but to use "eco friendly" products. All stone cleaners are ph neutral out of necessity. Acidic cleaners could hurt the stone, and basic cleaners could eat away at the sealer.
