Toddler in Open Floor Plan

I love my house, I really do, but......

We had our first two boys in an old farmhouse. When they were toddlers, it was easy to use a baby gate to keep them in a safe area.

We had our third son in our new house. He is 9 months old and becoming very mobile. Just like his brothers, he is a button pusher and loves to stick his fingers into the electonics. He is fast! Blocking off a safe area in this house is nearly impossible. The same wide open spaces that I love make parenting a challenge. He is into everything in the blink of an eye. My wife is recovering from an auto accident and is lacking full mobility. Gates available at the store just don't bridge the gaps between rooms and make her movement less easy. I am exhausted because I am never able to rest unless everybody else is sleeping--and that is when I am catching up on laundry and housework.

To those of you with open floor plans and toddlers, what made life more livable for you?

TIA
