Does shower tile have to match floor tile?

I am in a bit of a dilemma. The floor was originally a microtopping over concrete on 3 baths and a kitchen. The ctr. did an awful job and I got most of my money returned to me. I can have another microtopping put on, or grind it down to the orignal concrete and stain it OR put tile in. I done want to deal with another microtopping and I am scared also to have the original floor stained.

Now the showers are done. Can I use a tile that doesnt match the showers for the floors? Each of two showers has a different tile - casa del casa neutra series which is prohibitively expensive to buy for the floor. I was thinking of a dark grey tile, which will butt up against the pale beige of the master shower and the dark brown/grey of the spare shower. Alternatively, I go with an alternate floor type - concrete, I guess. Any suggestions?

I'd like them to look 'right' together, but that doesn't necessarily mean matching. If they both work in the room's color pallet, it will be fine.

A different tile on the floor is fine as long as it coordinates together. In your case, I think a dark grey floor tile would be great.

Should the grout be the same color? Not necessarily. Will it look weird to use a darker gray on the floor and a lighter gray in the shower? Not at all. Any recommended colors for the shower and floor tiles along these lines? I've been getting stuff at Lowe's and they carry MAPEI Warm gray for the subway tile, and silver for the hex, if you lke a darker grey for the hex. Silver is actually a medium grey, but it'll appear alot darker with the white tile. Our bathroom isn't perfectly square. I think a colored grout seam that is uneven will be really obvious(that's my understanding where you would do any flubbing). Can you grout just the seam white? Can you skip grout and caulk it? Any suggestions here? Grout everything on the floor the same color. it'll actually show up more if you try doing what you suggested. It'll literally draw attention to it. What you want to dpo is make sure that you're square to the most obvious walls from the door. Especially with the hex, it won't be quite as obvious as you think, unless it's WAY out, and then nothing you can do will hide it, even using a blending color grout. One other thing-- that joint where the floor hits the walls should be caulked, but still caulk it with a caulking that matches the grout, both color AND texture. Does anyone know what the measure is for hex tile and subway? For subway, use unsanded, and for the hex, use sanded.

A "standard size" hall bath is 5 x 8 = 40 square feet. Your bath is very small, so I suggest Corian panels in white (bonus points for no grout). You could add wallpaper if the outcome seems too plain for your taste.

Your instinct that they would clash is spot on--I would not put those two together. Your inspiration photo is beautiful because everything is the same material, and it looks cohesive and flowing. Either do the same material on both or use a plain white quartz on the counter tops and the tile on the b/s and vent hood, OR do the Noble Gray counter tops with a plain white tile.

Your rooms are spacious enough to let you play with more than monochromatic scheme in your bathroom. You have yellow-brown colors now, if you stay in this group everything will look nice and blended/ warm shades/. Grey will be complimentary if you find warm shade of it. Grey with cold look to it- more blue undertones might look too distracting.

Jenny, if it looks good to YOU, that's the tile you need to use. None of us have to live with it, and our collective tastes might be a whole lot different from yours.

thanks for the advice. The problem is that the tile has to co-ordinate with 3 baths and a kitchen. The kitchen has light grey concrete counters and white cabs., so I think a dark grey would work in all rooms. The problem is that both showers have a step up made of the casa del casa tile so the tiles would butt up against each other.

The other thing I could do is I could afford to do the casa del casa each of the two baths to match the showers and then do grey in the half bath and kitchen. Would 2 baths with showers (upstairs) matching floor tiles (one grey/brown and one beige) and one bath and kitchen (downstairs) with matching tile look all right in a house with wood floors? The two baths are separated in different "wings" of the house, completely sepatate. That is four floor types...

Most of the homes I tile-- every different tile surface gets a different tile, whether it be different in color, size, shape, texture, or any combination thereof. There's nothing that says rooms have to match.

Thanks Bill. That is helpful. I am thinking of putting the casa del casa neutra to match the shower in the master bath, and putting a dark cement/concrete grey tile everywhere else.

BTW Bill, you were great help to me once when I had a distant nonblood relative mess up my showers. I had to purchase new tile and I hired a licensed ctr. I think he did a good job. What do you think? Here is a video of my bird dancing in the new shower.
