Colonial Birdhouse went outside on this Spring-y Day

Remember this TS find I showed you in the Fall of the Colonial Birdhouse...well, today it's sunny & so Spring-y outside (tho below normal temps) & I was working on the porch Easter decor...needed to find a permanent home for the bdhse. Here is last yr's pic:

Today it found a home at my "Lily Garden." Well, no lilies in that garden right now ...it's pretty sad lookin' out there...but DH & I added the Colonial Birdhouse anyway! Here it is:

While I've been recuperating this month, DH took a pattern from this birdhse & built a couple more. I'll be painting them soon. His are super, duper...because he built them out of heavy duty barnwood planks! Love 'em...they'll be for Farmer's Market.

So, Spring has sprung here ... & can't help but smile to be outdoors a bit & see more of the purple Crocus out front:

Jeanne, your birdhouse looks right at home with the other birdhouses. Cute bird cage with the blk bird hanging below them! You always have neat things outside too.

Your crocus are beautiful. Such pretty shades of purple. The little bunny looks so content surrounded by all the lovely flowers blooming. I just noticed my crocus are blooming too. Spring will come.

Ok, everything is growing & the Lilies have started blooming this past week ...here's a pic from today: A wren lives in the red house...but she poked her head back in when I tried to take pics: I dug & dug moving Lilies when I created this Lily garden w/birdhouses (cause we had lost a tree & there was more sun available in the new spot) ...but here's the old garden by the garden shed where Lilies are still bloomin' among the Hydrangea! The bird houses were very inexpenive kits that had small precut wood and fiberboard as piece parts. The small round opening was originally for a chickadee size. I blocked the holes and added some seperate compartments about 3x3 inches each, before putting on the small roof. A wad of plain cotton was added to each partition and small 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch diameter holes were drilled to enter into each seperate compartment. I knew that these were used, as a woodpecker had detected something and tried to peck big holes around the tiny openings, but didn't succeed. I also have a 6x6 inch chunk of wood that I drilled many various sized holed about 5 inches deep all over the four sides. Its way up on a pole with a metal trash can cover acting as a roof. Not sure if all the areas are activly supporting bees, but I also have a large mason been house that has 6 inch long tubes that are 5/16 inch in diameter, and are grouped together. They have liners inside each tube and these get replaced once per year, after the bees used the tubes. There are about 100 tubes per nest. The mason bee lays several eggs in the tubes and adds food, then plugs up the opening with mud. They hibernate and then wake up the following spring and eat the food, while opening up the end of the tubes. They are the earliest bees, earlier than even any other pollinating insect. They are noticably gone once the warmer weather is here, about mid April. By then, some of my fruit trees have been flowering already, and have been pollinated. Adding any moisture or sugar to the cotton can cause it to mold. The bumble bees treat the cotton like a bird would do for building a nest.

I know I posted before on this thread, but gotta share with you what my family and I did today. Well, let me start back a couple weeks ago when the city came out and took up the front sidewalk and replaced it. I had planting beds right up against it with those landscape timbers, so had to pull those out and also move some plants to the back until we got things back in order. They finished the sidewalk - did a beautiful job and still needed to replace the edging. Well, thank goodness for direct depost tax refunds! We went out and bought two truckloads of what the stoneyard calls "Panhandle dry stack" and laid those out as edging along the beds and down the sides of our property line. We didn't have enough to go all the way down one side, but will need to get one more truckload to finish that later on. Next step is putting the plants back in the ground and we should get that done tomorrow. So, what I did in the garden today, along with husband and my three boys was to lay stone edging. Gosh, I am tired tonight! I should sleep really well. Okay - time for bed since we're supposed to set our clocks an hour ahead this weekend.

Luckygal, where in the world are you? Somewhere near a beach obviously--but which one. Sorry no good luck on the TS shopping, do keep trying! Jeanne, I have two baker's racks outside, one is a corner unit--but neither look nearly as cute as yours with your collections and vignettes. I need to work on mine I think. That is so neat that you do the Farmer's market too. Candy, I'm another one who does tablescapes for my "imaginary" friends. DH will only eat at the table when we have company--rest of the time he prefers to eat in front of the tv. Karen, I didn't do a table, but I did glue a little cheese tray and glass dome on a pedestal and decorate it--can I get any points for that? ;o) Kathleen, the rooster napkins like in your photo that you shared with me are some of my favs. We don't do sit down breakfast often, but I like to just sit the table and display them on the plates because they look so cute.

that bird house looks right at home nestled among the others. Great spot for it and also a great 'shot' of all of them. I always enjoy looking at pics of your outdoors...you've created so many pretty areas to enjoy.
Those crocus are so uplifting to see...like Spring is actually on its way!! Well, we did have a nice day today, but tomorrow & Friday...more rain and snow...I can't believe how long Winter is hanging around.

Like Candy said.. please show us the birdhouses when they're all finished. I'd love to see them.

Oh sure, go and show me all those beautiful purple flowers! Even if they'd grow in Phoenix, they wouldn't last 24hrs with me. So here I am with purple flower envy.
I really want to hang out at your place! Especially next two days during the fool "heat wave" when its suppose to be 97! This is March, for Pete's sake!

I was reading about that neat ol' birdhouse going out in the yard...and it looks great where you put it...but thinking I'm not sure I'd be able to put it outside. Then I read your talented DH will be making more off it. So tell me, do you guys ever come to the Phoenix Farmers Market? I'll be a good customer if you do. ;o)

Very cool birdhouse arrangement, Jeanne. The blackbird looks like he is in charge of the Condo LOL.
The crocus are beautiful. With the way the weather has been here it will be July before any thing blooms here. Rain, snow and fog today and up to 6" of snow overnight.YUCK, YUCK, YUCK!! Anyway I can come back and look at your Pretty flowers and dream.
I really hope you are feeling better now.

Jeanne, I love that your little birdhouse city in the lily garden, can't wait for pix of it when the lilies are blooming. I wish we had a decent farmers market to set up at, sounds like fun. Those striped crocus are just beautiful, never seen that color.

Love your birdhouse village. And your pics of crocus are just perfect. I can actually see spring coming! Lilies, did you say lilies? I love lilies. Do you all post garden pics somewhere else? Cottage gardens?
