matte glazed ceramic for shower?
Comments (7)And how bad would it look if I use matte almond color ceramic for the shower and then have white commode right next to it and a white sink? I refuse to buy a new commode -- we just bought it a few years ago...but is that just Not Done? DH really doesn't want to have a white shower base with the gorgeous Atlas Concorde Fibra Canvas tiles we've found... The colors I'm working with: dark walnut vanity, labradorite counter, these Fibra tiles in kind of a beigeish-green-grey-linen texture, some Crossville 6x6s that I found that are kind of a darker version of the color of the labradorite, and white fixtures (and chrome hardware). The almond 2x2s I picked up just because I love the texture and they're so retro looking...but maybe I can't use them? Does white have to be the only neutral in the room if the sink and commode are white? Help!...See Morewhite 12x12 ceramic tiles for kitchen floor
Comments (13)I think the first question is: do your tiles look dated? Be honest. Unfortunately tile looks don't seem to stand the test of time. We had the 12x12 tile in our kitchen demo-ed. I would say that it is VERY awful...we were moved out while that was going on. The demo-ing only took a couple of days though. In our case the tiles were extremely bonded to a concrete subfloor so I would guess it was worse than usual. OTOH, floors are too often neglected in kitchen renos. It's sad when people spend crazy money on cabinets and appliances yet leave dated floors in place. It's not good when you can *tell* that they left the old floors in place. My flooring budget (replacing the kitchen tile with hardwood and refinishing the hardwood in dining/living/hall areas) ended up being 25% of our kitchen reno budget! It was a huge hassle as we had to move everything out and we are a family of four. We had to find alternative accommodations for a week because the flooring area included our home entrance. But I would say it was a critical element to the kitchen reno and I have no regrets now that I'm on the other side. I don't imagine that grout refreshing will be simple or cheap either. $3000 sounds like a great price to me if it includes demoing the old grout. I would add to that budget the cost of moving items and staying out of the house during the demo part. I do love a white kitchen. Personally I would not choose a white floor to go with that - I agree with comments that a mid-tone would "ground" things better. I think earth coloured ceramic would look great if they were VERY good quality - some are quite vulnerable to chipping. I also love this look: If you're considering resale, do consider alternatives to tile if you do not live in a warm climate....See MoreAnyone regret marble tile in shower?
Comments (19)The Sequelo is more rustic. I finalized and ordered my tile today. I switched the floor planks to Seta in Silver because it's a much lighter look. It is in 6x24, but the store had a floor display laid out in herringbone and it looked great. http://www.besttile.com/Tile-Collection.aspx?pid=384&cid=19 I also switched back to shower walls of honed marble, but the shower floor in a ceramic tile in a grey to coordinate. I was more concerned over having a marble floor than marble shower walls, since there are only two walls (other walls are glass). It will be sealed before and after grouting. I'm using the Seta 12x24" plank for the 4' shower bench seat. Since I couldn't order a few tiles (had to order a box), I'm also using the Seta Silver in the laundry room. Everything's ordered. Sheetrock went up today and the hardwood floor material was just delivered to let it acclimate before install....See MoreHardwood floors in kitchens: any regrets?
Comments (37)floor specifics, laundry room: we installed tiled slate and I must say not a week now, 6+ years later, goes by when I'm not thankful for this. It's a "lifestyle" choice of course, but we wind up having a lot of soggy laundry around here. One kid (now flown the coop, sadly), swims and sodden gear would strew the floor morning noon and night. And it can all just sit there harmlessly on the slate, no problem. Wet dishtowels -- I toss them in daily from the kitchen -- it's a straight shot from the sink to the laundry room door and I just heave em in. :) dh does yard work and comes in sopping -- *drop*, no problem. Etc. If you're neater maybe you can weather something else, but that slate floor is beautiful in my mind and incredibly functional. Also even though it's slate, it's brittleness is along a plane parallel to the floor not perpendicular, so it's hard. Our sideload washer sits on this and it does some pretty steady spinning and hopping and bouncing, all harmlessly on this hard floor. Highly recommended....See Morejohnfrwhipple
