I think it's going to be multi-step. Put the blades on newspaper in a cardboard box. Spray them with 'Smells Begone' (link attached - I've not used their other products, but the simple pump spray does indeed get rid of - completely, apparently forever- the smell of tobacco smoke) which I find in the local grocery store. Close box and leave it overnight. Remove the shoes next morning and discard the paper. There shouldn't be a noticeable smoke smell, but they may smell musty. Now clean the leather with saddle soap, the plastic parts with a sudsy cloth, and the metal parts with metal-cleaner; spray inside the shoes and then stuff with fresh, dry newspaper. Again, put shoes on paper inside the cardboard box and spray. Close up again and leave overnight. The next morning, remove the shoes and discard all newspaper and the box. The smell of smoke as well as sweaty feet and musty smell should be completely dissipated. Use on old pair of athletic socks: fill each sock with 1 cup baking soda, fold over the top and secure with a clip or rubber band. Put a soda-sock in each shoe after wearing to maintain an odor-free state. And speaking of odors, soaking the feet for 20 minutes, twice a week in a solution of 1/2 cup cider vinegar mixed into a gallon of water will do marvels for keeping the feet sweet. We have to research everything these days. I have been shopping for new leather couches and found this out today. A judge is expected to order several retailers to pay millions of pounds to people who suffered burns and rashes from faulty leather sofas. http://www.dvorak.org/blog/2009/05/20/toxic-leather-sofas-from-china/ After investigation, it was found that the couches were packed with sachets containing dimethly fumarate DMF, an antifungal agent intended to prevent the leather from getting moldy during storage and shipment from China. The chemical evaporates, penetrating the leather and can transfer to clothing and skin. Even small levels of exposure can cause serious skin sores, blisters, rashes and eye irritation. Thank you for all your ideas. I've passed them onto DD who is trying them out. Her clothes that can take repeated washings are getting just that. Thankfully, their new apartment has a washer and dryer right there in their kitchen. Her purses, shoes, coats, good dresses. slacks, sweaters, down comforter, blanket, throw, etc. are at the dry cleaners. They are being dry cleaned . . . and ozoned at another facility. Shoes are being cleaned by hand and then ozoned. The bill for these items is just over $620. Her painted furniture (lt. green nightstand, white shelf unit and white desktop shelf unit are now light brown-gray and smell badly of smoke. Washing and soaking have not helped. As per your recommendations, she is taking photos of them and the damage and throwing them away. We will add them to our insurance claim. The idea of stuffing her purses with newspaper is one she will do when she gets them back from the dry cleaners, as an added precaution. Smoke is strange stuff. It will absorb into anything porous, just as if it were a liquid. If the paint on your walls was a fresh coat of good quality, the walls could be wiped & done. If it's an old coat of builders grade flat, they will absorb the smoke and should be re-painted, probably. ANY other soft goods in that room stand to carry the same properties like drapes, carpet, upholstery etc. Before I went the insurance claim route I might try an industrial cleaning company for their special product for such use. They are usually mix-with-water chemicals that in various concentrations can clean smoke damage from almost anything. Good Luck!
