Smoke smell on ....... - How do I remove it?

I got some used roller blades for my daughter on ebay. They came yesterday and have that smell of something that was around cigarette smoke a lot. When I put my hand inside them, the smell actually transfers to my hands so I know they are saturated with what ever makes the lingering smoke smell. Any ideas of how I can get rid of the smell, not just mask it. Does fabreeze actually destroy the smell of cover it up? My daughter doesn't want to use the blades because of the smell, it's quite strong. Suggestions please.

You just put your hand in them and it comes out smelling? Alrighty then.

The easy way is let them sit outside for a day or two to air out. If you want them faster dump some baking soda in them while they air. It would be a good idea to disinfect the heck out of them too.

I think it's going to be multi-step. Put the blades on newspaper in a cardboard box. Spray them with 'Smells Begone' (link attached - I've not used their other products, but the simple pump spray does indeed get rid of - completely, apparently forever- the smell of tobacco smoke) which I find in the local grocery store. Close box and leave it overnight. Remove the shoes next morning and discard the paper. There shouldn't be a noticeable smoke smell, but they may smell musty. Now clean the leather with saddle soap, the plastic parts with a sudsy cloth, and the metal parts with metal-cleaner; spray inside the shoes and then stuff with fresh, dry newspaper. Again, put shoes on paper inside the cardboard box and spray. Close up again and leave overnight. The next morning, remove the shoes and discard all newspaper and the box. The smell of smoke as well as sweaty feet and musty smell should be completely dissipated. Use on old pair of athletic socks: fill each sock with 1 cup baking soda, fold over the top and secure with a clip or rubber band. Put a soda-sock in each shoe after wearing to maintain an odor-free state. And speaking of odors, soaking the feet for 20 minutes, twice a week in a solution of 1/2 cup cider vinegar mixed into a gallon of water will do marvels for keeping the feet sweet.

Smoke is strange stuff. It will absorb into anything porous, just as if it were a liquid. If the paint on your walls was a fresh coat of good quality, the walls could be wiped & done. If it's an old coat of builders grade flat, they will absorb the smoke and should be re-painted, probably. ANY other soft goods in that room stand to carry the same properties like drapes, carpet, upholstery etc. Before I went the insurance claim route I might try an industrial cleaning company for their special product for such use. They are usually mix-with-water chemicals that in various concentrations can clean smoke damage from almost anything. Good Luck!

Vinegar is a very poor choice for cleaning wood. 1 - Wash ALL surfaces with warm water and a mild soap. Don't forget the underside. Use a toothbrush on the cracks. 2 - Rinse with water and let it dry 3 - Wash all surfaces with mineral spirits and 0000 steel wool or a green scrub pad. Wipe it dry. You should be odor free, grunge free, and ready to paint.

Activated charcoal can help absorb the stuff. Lay out some trays of it in out of the way places - inside the cabinet with the doors open for example. You might try baking soda as well - if any of these compounds are weakly acidic, they will be absorbed by baking soda. I recently had a terrible fridge odor from rotten beans and once I removed them, it still stunk until I put a plate of baking soda in there. Not guaranteed to work but it doesn't cost much. I would also leave the door open rather than shut so it can dissipate.

I just bought a used wood bed, turns out it smells like cigarette smoke. It's a dark wood color and I was planning on painting it in a distressed gray finish. What would be the best and easiest way to get rid of that awful smell? Is it ever going to smell neutral or will it always kind of smell...if so I don't want to put much effort into and would rather get rid of it.

My kids rollerblades are all hard plastic, so a good washing with soap and water would be my first step and leaving them out in the sun for a couple of days to dry.

Thanks for the tips! These are actually adult rollerblades. My 13 year old wears a size 9 woman's shoe. They are a pair of K2 skates, which seem to be made from fabric (suede?), plastic, metal and padding. I stuffed the insides with newspapers, spritzed the outside with fabreeze and left them for a day. I think it helped some. I like the baking soda in an old sock idea. Next week my daughter is going on a canoe trip so I will be able to focus more fully without her hovering.
