I know this is an old post but since there is a current question about this, thought I'd share what worked for me. I had a healthcare worker that was helping with my Dad who I hired and didn't know she smoked. She was great except for that but she reeked so badly I could not even stand next to her. My DH found a larger version of an Orek air purifier we'd used before and we put it right by the chair she sat in and there was no more smoke odor!! Problem solved! (Worked even faster than the smaller one we had used before to get rid of paint VOCs) It was amazing. Room smelled of fresh outdoor air and was wonderful. Then I used the same Orek later on to clear cigarette smoke and moth ball smell from several expensive leather purses that I'd gotten a good deal on in eBay. It took about 2-3 days to get rid of both smells, and I thought I'd leave it a few more and I was pleasantly surprised to even have the smell of leather retur! Had I not known what to do, I would have had to trash them. And just recently, helped my sister with very strong VOC odor from a huge brand new cat tree that was about 6-7 feet tall. It was particle board and sisal and her cat was starting to get sick and was giving them headaches. It was in a room by itself and it had improved in a day and was totally cleared by day three or four. She was so impressed. So I've never done multiple large pieces of furniture, but it it can clean the smells from several rooms of the VOCs from new paint smells, cat trees, purses and chairs, it would probably do great with yours. I would leave it several days to a week but you should smell improvement in 1-2 days I would think. Oh, and I always put the side that pulls air in, towards the item to clean and not the side blowing out. The brand is Orek and no I don't work for them or anything. Just pleased with a product that worked on this difficult problem and sharing it. The larger one we got that worked so well for us is called Orek DualMax and it even has a small remote. If you try it, hope it works for you as well as it has for us, our family and friends.

I have a few rentals and my last tenant was a smoker (we did have a non smoking clause in the lease but what can you do to police them). The house reeked when she moved out. I was sick to my stomach when I walked in because I knew the amount of work I would have to do to erase it. She said she only smoked in the dining room and bedroom so she didn't think it was a big deal. Ummm...smoke goes everywhere in open concept houses you imbecile. First you have to wash every wall/ceiling surface and all woodwork with a cleaning solution to remove the nicotine. Otherwise it will seep through water based paint and turn it yellow. I used vinegar and ammonia in water with a few drops of detergent. I forget the amounts but you can google for recipes. I changed the water in every room at least. Then I had to paint all walls and ceilings. The woodwork seemed ok after cleaning so I left it as I just had painted it when the prior tenant moved out. I used the same solution on the hardwoods and cleaned multiple times. All window treatments were thrown out (weren't mine anyway). I also wiped out all cabinets as well. If you have ductwork, get it cleaned as well and change the furnace filter. All carpet and fabric things will need to be removed as well. Literally every surface in the house needs to be wide down as the smoke goes everywhere. It took me a full weekend of wiping down before I was ready for paint. When I was finished, it was almost back to normal. There was a slight off smell but not specifically smoke. I think the smoke got into attic spaces and insulation etc but it is definitely habitable and over time should be back to normal. Good luck. edited to add that the brick fireplace seemed fine. I did scrub it with cleaning solution.

Thanks for the input. I called a duct cleaning company, and they were very helpful. First, they wanted me to check the cold air returns to see if there was any dust in them. I checked, and not only is there dust, but it is sticky matted dust which I think might be the culprit. So, I have scheduled a duct cleaning. Another thing they suggested was to get my furnace coils cleaned, so they will examine them also, and clean if necessary. They would have suggested this option first if I hadn't found evidence of the ducts needing to be cleaned, since coil cleaning is less expensive. Lastly, they did warn that a duct cleaning won't help if the odor has bonded with the metal of the ductwork. For that, they recommended I contact ServPro who can perform an ozone treatment. Hopefully, though, the duct and coil cleanings will be enough.

The previous owner of our house smoked. I kept getting a whiff of smoke every once in a while. Turns out it was the light bulbs in one of the closets. You really do need to wash down each and every surface. Priming and repainting will seal any smells on the walls if that is where they are coming from. You could also look into having a company come in and run an ozone machine.
