Anyone bought from Designer Home Surplus on web or Ebay?

I'm tempted to purchase my range, 48" Bertazzoni online from

Designer Home Surplus either directly thru their website (can use Visa - maybe more protection that way?) or thru their site on Ebay: dhs dallas. They have great prices and good reviews which I assume are real - tho they aren't affiliated with the BBB. Has anyone bought from them?

Not so comfortable taking a chance on a $6000 item without

some reassurance.

More on safety. We tied our VISA Card with Paypal to use on EBay. In other words we pay with Paypal and they charge our Visa card. Double safety and faster shipping using Paypal.

I have no experience with DHS itself, but in general...

I am a fan of local bricks and mortar stores, especially when spending a fortune on a range, especially when that range is an (to the rest of the world) obscure European brand. I'd rather sleep at night knowing there is a human being I can smack around in case of delivery/installation problems etc. Yes, sales tax is a hassle but the local guys will often make deals that come close to internet prices.

Of course, others may respond with glowing reviews of DHS, and there are many threads titled "Sears nightmare" and similar, so YMMV.

I'd like to second what pebbles said about GIA certificates. At the higher end of the diamond world, stones are traded based strictly on certificates. They are that important. I'm another one who did a good deal of research a few years back. The way the market is structured, there are cities such as Antwerp and NY and sources in Russia and Israel where the market is centered and the best stones are traded and cut. There are wholesalers who buy stones, make up the rings and then sell them -- even to the high end stores like Tiffanys and Cartier though those often have exclusive styles. Harry Winston has their own workshop upstairs above the store where they make some pieces. But if you are going for a stone larger than 2 carats and with good cut and color -- pebbles again is quite right, chances are you are not going to do very well outside a big market. Even some discounters here have trouble getting larger stones of good quality. Many local jewelers are clueless about diamonds no matter what they say. The industry is structured on fixed pricing per carat, clarity and color. There's a publication used in the wholesale market that determines this and changes weekly or monthly (can't recall). Then there is cut, which is an eye thing developed only by extensive looking and relationships with the 'better" dealers who get the better stones. Point is, there are regional diamond centers in big cities such as Chicago and elsewhere, plus the online folks. With every layer of distance from the source there is an upcharge. Pebbles also makes a really good point about resale. The only fallback anyone has is to buy the best color, clarity and largest carat size you can afford from a name jeweler such as Tiffany, Cartier, Winston, Bulgari etc. as these command a premium if you resell them at auction. But you will pay retail and those brands command premium prices. I had a Cartier engagement ring that I resold at auction after many years and got a good price. But it was registered there with a number and I had retained the original invoice that stated the specs. I had worn it a lot and the engraving had worn off so I took to to them and they reengraved their name in the ring It was a pretty ring and I was able to sell it at auction advantageously because it was a prestige brand. But that's the only reason to pay retail (though styles go in and out of fashion and even values of the prestige brands fluctuate accordingly). If you are going for a larger stone than 2 carats then I would recommend a ton of research and asking everyone you know so you can get through the chain and as close as possible to the source. It might also be a good idea to check around on jewelry auctions where engagement rings are sold with certificates as you can sometimes do a bit better. My youngest brother got engaged two years ago. They had shopped extensively and he really knew his onions, plus the style she wanted and what he could afford. By making the right wholesale connection and shopping in NY (i.e. in a source market) rather than in Arizona or California, he was able to buy a ring that was a carat larger with the same color and clarity, and a better cut within his budget. The dealer was happy to deal with him because he knew exactly what he was buying and knew how good the price was and didn't dither over making the decision.

We spent $20,000 over the last three years with AJ Madison outfitting our guesthouse and home. All new washer/dryer (Bosch and GE), dishwashers (Bosch and GE), stoves, and refrigerators—the works. The dishwasher in our house never worked right. We had technicians out five times in the first six months before I contacted AJ Madison. I emailed the sales agent I had dealt with for all of the purchases. She referred me to Kellee in the “Client Experience” department. This is the email I got from her: Hello, Thank you for reaching out. We apologize to hear you are having troubles with the unit. While AJ Madison offers a 30 day return window on un-used and un-installed items, the manufacturer provides a full year of coverage. Should the technician deem the unit non-repairable, GE with authorize a direct replacement and organize the exchange. Should you have any additional questions, please give GE a call at Since I purchased AJ Madison’s “White Glove” delivery service and had it installed, this absolved AJ Madison of any responsibility, from their point of view. Lesson learned: don’t bother with their delivery service which was mediocre at best. Better to use someone local that you know and trust. Anyway, AJ Madison’s “30-Day guarantee” is worthless if had your appliance installed. How would someone know the appliance was defective if they had not installed it? I responded that I bought my dishwasher from AJ Madison, and I expected them to replace a defective product they sold, just as when I bought a KitchenAid mixer from Target and it went out two months afterward. I took it back to Target and they replaced it on the spot. The next email I received from AJ Madison informed me that if I continued to have trouble, they would be happy to call on my behalf to schedule service. I can do that. I DID do that, several times. After this, I never heard another word from them. I thought a retailer with the bulk of appliances they sell, that AJ Madison would have the bargaining muscle to take care of their customers; obviously, that’s not the case. Several friends had urged me to use Best Buy, Lowes, or Home Depot, which take back appliances that are defective, but I thought I’d support a lesser-known supplier for better service—my mistake. I’m so sorry I ever dealt with AJ Madison. They don’t stand behind their appliances and they don’t stand behind their word.

OK> So, I'm reading this post due to a recent experience with the plumber my GC is using for our renovation. I got a babysitter to watch my toddler so I could go look at fixtures at their showroom with my baby. So, I get there and they don't have many of the nicer brands on display- they want to show me everything in a catalog!! Well, thank you but I can do that at home. So, fine- I briefly look at the catalog and pick a few things to get prices. They gave me some pricing and I left. So- wouldn't you want to see products in person if you plan to invest nearly $2000 on them?? I dragged my two small children to another local plumbing outfit to see the higher end stuff I got quoted for at the previous place. The prices were more than $500 different!!! I mean to do I have stupid written on my head b/c I have a newborn? Do they just think I don't have time to research and will just take their price?? This mother has an MBA thank you very much. Fine. So I talked to my contractor and he said to approach them on the issue. I did. They claim their product is better quality and that you can get the same things from other dealers but they aren't as heavy... blah blah blah. That may be true for some Kohler fixtures, but not Rohl!!! And I don't even believe them at that. For the amount of money saved I can buy a whole new fixture in a few years if I decide to change it or it goes bad!! Can someone please tell me if these people are just jerking around with me?? I thought about how they may try to pad the rest of the bill if they adjust the fixture prices, so I'm not really sure what to do with this mess. This is why I do NOT trust vendors like this- b/c of dishonest people who try to make excuses for their ridiculous prices.

I bought all my Franke items on ebay from 2 different companies at the end of 2006. No issues. After I purchased the Orca sink from one vendor (which was a great price), I found a company that was discontinuing their Franke line. I made out like a bandit buying my faucet and sink accessories from them.

I bought a $200 item from them.

Everything was fine. Yeah, I know that is not a $6k range.

I live 20 miles from Capital Cooking Equipment.

I will look for a real good deal on line for a Culinarian range.

If anything happens and I don't get satisfaction I could always throw a grate through the window at Santa Fe Springs LOL. J/K.....kinda

The one ebayer I contacted said it all went smoothly and the range is covered under a warranty as they are an authorized dealer altho I have to find an installer and its' my prob. if that goes awry.

They are $1200 cheaper than any B&M store in my area. That could buy a great dishwasher! And I still get the "free hood with purchase" promo.

BillP1: will tie paypal to my Visa - might as well get
my 2% cashback and double the protection if I decided to pull the trigger...seems like a no-brainer...but what if....?

Just thought I would update everyone. Thus far I have received the range, not installed yet but appears to be in good shape. I have received not one but two damaged vent/hoods now from DHS aka Designer Home Surplus and am currently at a loss of what to do. My kitchen had been finished for weeks. I have no hood....while always polite, they keep sending previously opened and damaged goods. Update to follow.

I just ordered the 30 Berta yesterday from designer Home Surplus and didn't sleep last night. I always order from local stores in our area as they are so many to choose from here on Long Island. I couldn't pass up the tax savings and great price, however I called first thing this morning for more reassurance. I didnt use pay pal or anything else secure. I will let everyone know how this transaction plays out. Good or bad. took a leap of faith. We'll see.(I also let them know that I will need to purchase more appliances in the near future (true). But First lets see how this worked out. (my way of getting good customer service is the do good by me and I'll do good by you approach).

Lisa; how did your transaction go? have you received your
Berta and did you get a hood with it?

My 48" Berta is finally installed and seems to work fine - altho we can't do too much since we are still waiting for the hood. Somehow we have been sent two very old and damaged hoods and are now waiting for the 3rd one to arrive.

DHS has been very good in responding and trying to control
the problem of the bad hoods that keep arriving. Will let you know if/when I receive the 3rd one and hope it is in perfect condition....

Just thought I would give everyone an update on my Bertazzoni purchase from Designer Home Surplus (DHS).

My 3rd hood finally arrived and was fine. We were able to finally start using the range now that we had the hood installed and noticed both ovens were off. Bertazzoni has sent someone several times and currently only one oven works properly. The small oven can barely crawl up to 300 degrees.

Bertazzoni now claims the DHS sold us an open box (news to us!) and thus we are not covered by the warranty. DHS paid for last tech to come - it was another failure. We have a 48" range from Bertazzoni via Designer Home Surplus that is completely useless to us.

We are assuming we were sold a faulty unit. A big fat lemon of a Bertazzoni. We are hoping DHS can remedy the problem by either replacing or letting us return the unit.

I hope this helps someone out there...perhaps you can avoid our situation.

Nice to see the DHS guy here, trying to help, butttttt-----
That would be a "Heck of A SHOCK" to me, to find out,
(after the fact) that it did not come with a manufacturers
warranty.

Unfortunately, (Some times, maybe even Most Times), The old saying "You Get What You pays for" holds true.

The post is a bit confusing though, as it seems the larger oven has been fixed so is the stove "Really" completely "Useless".

I wanted to give you a quick update (although I'm sure you've spoken with someone at DHS today over the phone as well). I can tell you that the warranty on this unit is valid, and the item that you received was factory new. I'm not sure why anyone at Bertazzoni is telling you otherwise, but we will make sure that this discrepancy gets straightened out. We are very careful about clearly stating whether an appliance comes with the factory warranty or not (since we also sell scratch & dent units). Rest assured that you are covered by Bertazzoni's official factory warranty on this unit. More details to come tomorrow.

Had a similar situation with them. Bought a fridge - new, with warranty, came with all the paperwork, but a scratch & dent unit. It stopped working within the first year. Long story short, we had a manufacturer's service tech out & we discovered that the unit was not under warranty. According to factory records it had been "scrapped" (manufacturers term) and was never intended for sale.

DHS did give us our money back, so that's a good thing. But the whole situation was a hassle to deal with and we were out the $75 service call from the manufacturer.

Maybe the solution is to get a serial number & check that specific unit with the manufacturer in advance to make sure your unit is covered. We learned that another thing to look at that might tip you off to problems is the power cord. The molded, factory plug on our unit had been cut off & replaced with an after market plug. The service tech said that he had seen this before (not saying the other units were DHS supplied) & this was a dead giveaway that the unit was scrapped.

Again, had an issue & it was solved, but would have preferred to avoid the problem from the get-go.

purchased new 48 inch capital rangetop, good price. they shipped it out without labeling do not stack or put anything on top. Box looked ok upon receiving it. I signed with a subject o inspection. After uncrating found under one of the cast iron grates enough weight was applied to damage underlying metal. In contact with Designer, waiting for resolution . Shipping company they use will have you sitting around all day. Told between 2-4, left work early. Show up at 6;30. Guess I was lucky. will also check serial # for any warranty issues, thank you will update
