lighting over bathroom mirror - guideline?

My mirror over the 60' vanity will be 48x36. Is there a guideline to the size of the light fixture above? I'd like a bar type of fixure to match the sconces on either side of the make up mirror (next to the vanity). Thank you for your thoughts!

I just did some research on this: The width of your light fixture should be 3/4 the width of the mirror. So for a 24' wide mirror, you would want to stay in the range of an 18 inch wide light fixture. Hope this helps!

I always say "you're going to spend a lot of money remodeling this room, so you might as well do it right." Too often I see folks live with something that is poorly designed (like your sink arrangement) or awkward to use just because that's the way it is. So let's talk about what it would take to "do it right." I think you already know this, so let me confirm that the right-hand sink is too close to the wall. I'm sure somebody is always hitting their arm on that wall -- but we get used to living with situations like this as I mentioned -- or we think it's impossible or way too expensive to change. Moving that sink just a few inches away from the wall could make a huge difference. If you can stop the cabinet-maker, and give yourself permission to replan the vanity with a new sink arrangement, and new countertop, this will allow you to lay out the wall sconces in the right way and get rid of those horizontal strip lights above. (see photo below) You may need to include some additional plumbing and electrical work in your budget, and I realize these costs add up. If you do this, though, I think you will come to believe in time that this was the best decision you made -- and a wise investment -- since your bathroom will function better, feel better and look so much better. Enjoy. ps. If you're planning to strip the tile off that wing wall, I'd close up that recessed medicine cabinet area, too, then add a pullout cabinet with shelves like photos below to hold smaller items. It looks like you have sufficient space to add "his and hers" pullouts -- and the cabinetry could "float" above floor.

A double light over each sink should be sufficient with a window and assuming the shower is directly across from the vanity and that is the extent of the room. Other options are three single sconces mounted on the mirror and an over head light to give more light to the shower. I have a four-light over a 60" vanity in a 5x11 windowless room. The vanity area is well-lit. The shower at the end of the room is a little more shadowed but not enough to make showering and cleaning an issue.

Here is your dilemma. if you take down those fixtures there will be two holes in the mirror, that being said, they will be up high and most likely off center. So, to get new lighting that is not stuck in the corners, and covers the holes behind it, might be next to impossible unless you run a thick bar that covers the space. But some times back in the day they only drug wire over and did not put in actual junction boxes, so the bringing it to code might be another issue. 1. take one of the lights down and see what is going on 2. probably have to replace the mirror and move the electrical location.

Thank you so much for these really helpful comments. @kandrewspa, Interesting suggestion about changing the sconces next to the mirrors, and I'll consider it although I do really love the ones I've got. Re the ceiling fixture, I do have one but unfortunately it is primarily an exhaust fan with just a small LED light, which I forgot to turn on when I took my photos. I need that fan, and there isn't room for an additional ceiling fixture. That's why I wanted to put in the lighting over the mirrors, to augment the sconces at the sides. I do already have both categories of lighting on dimmer switches; forgot to mention that. @JustMe, for up-facing sconces to go above the mirrors, do you mean something like this or this from Justice Design, or this one from Capital Lighting, or this one from Swiss Passport? Would you place them above each mirror, or between them?

Has anyone used this product before and if you have, could you please post some pix? I am considering this in my bathroom and am worried that it will look cheap. I have seen single samples 18x18 however I can't picture how this will look on a larger floor area. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

we will have a long double sink vanity...2 30" cabinets with sinks separated by an 18" drawer bank and 18" drawer bases on the 2 outside ends of the vanities with 18" single door/drawer wall cabinets sitting on top of either end.....so the inside wall space is 78".... i am thinking of just framing one big mirror, rather than hanging 2 mirrors over the sinks,(mainly because i don't know what i would do with that wall space between the mirrors-i don't know if it'll look too barren). i would plan to hang two 3 light vanity lights (~28" wide) above the mirror and centered over the sinks, but am having a hard time finding pictures of this. would it look weird? i just don't know what i would do with ~ 18-20" of wall space between the 2 mirrors if that is what i did.... any opinions/guidelines for this situation to share???

Busybee - what about wall sconces on either side of mirrors over the sinks. I've seen where there is a mirror over each sink, a sconce to the left and right and one in the middle between the two mirrors. Or you could have four sconces, one on each side of each mirror, if the spacing isn't balanced with three. You would have to get mirrors more narrow than the sink base so the sconces won't interfere with the wall cabinets on each end. Or, if you keep the vanity lights above the mirrors, you could hang three coordinating photos or artwork in matching frames over the center 18" drawer bank. Just throwing a few ideas out there!
