glass towel bars opinion

In the final stretch at last! Traditional bathroom; want to put 18 inch towel bar on clear glass shower door. That will serve as the door pull; will also need a 6 inch pull (or a knob) going vertically on inside of door.

You can get these with the center bars (and small protruding ends) in clear borosilicate glass.

The finish on the supports would be polished nickel and traditional-looking, to coordinate with faucets/other towel bars in bathroom(Restoration Hardware Lugarno).

I'm thinking the glass bar/handle would "disappear" a bit more (desirable to me) being "glass against glass" when a towel is not on the bar anyway.

Or would it look odd and not in keeping with the all-polished nickel bars, etc in rest of bathroom?

Are you paying lots extra for a frameless glass door?
Because if you are, I think adding a towel bar will work against the 'invisible' look you're probably going for.
If it's not a frameless door, most already come with a towel bar.

Is this a a frameless door?
Have you considered that unless you hang up the towel on the outside bar perfectly EVERY time, it will likely look a mess. Part of the point of a frameless door (in my opinion) is to show off what is behind the door, not to mess up the view with hanging towels. I would seriously reconsider putting a towel bar on a frameless door. I just think towel bars are meant for the wall not a frameless door. Just my opinion.

I just had another idea that I could have a knob pull on the other side of the towel bar. There's one that's 3/4" in diameter just like the towel bar. Anyone has one and can tell me if it's easy to use?

Linelle Once again, you rescued me regarding my hand towel issue with your experience. :):) I have exactly the same layout and was debating between 2 single rod/ 1 double rod/ 1 single rod and 1 ring next to each other. By chance, I started hanging towels on the 2 robe hooks on the back of the bathroom door. To my surprise, they dried significantly faster than the towel that was draped over the towel bar. Perhaps because one side of the towel over the bar is against the wall and covered, I don't know. I am re-doing a guest bathroom, and seriously considering towel hooks instead of bars for two reasons: (a) the guest bathroom is small, and the towel hooks don't take up much real estate, and (b) don't want to make guests feel they have to fold towels or wonder where to put them after use; they can just hang them on the hooks. Now, if anyone has suggestions about a source for good towel hooks, please chime in! I figure some aren't so good cause the towels won't stay put. The ones that are on the back of my bathroom door work well, but aren't very nice-looking.

Tara, good point. I ended up getting my faucet early - Contractor needed it. I did realize by wanting all the grab bars for aging in place, I was going to have to go chrome instead of my preferred polished nickel (in my case). So I did that. My own towel bars are on the other side of the room - and the lone hook for my bathrobe is behind the door (and yup, cannot be seen). I fell in love with a double towel bar, and it is situated over the forced air heating vent - awesome in winter. And no, this doesn't match other fixtures (except in material), but doesn't look out of place.

Yes, it's a frameless door, and yes the door people said the same thing---why mess it up with a towel and towel bar.

HOWEVER, we really need the towel drying area.

So, let's pretend that I'm going to be stubborn and insist on a bar anyway, if there are times when no towel is on the bar, wouldn't the glass bar disappear more?

OR, would it look funny cause the other towel bar is not glass in center?

IMO, it would just make a frameless door look more like a regular framed door.
Not look "BAD" -- just look like a framed door.
So I'd save the extra $1,000 or so and simply get a framed door.
Or find another place for the towel.

I can appreciate what you mean about space for towels, but why not consider getting a rack that hangs over the back of the bathroom door that has hooks on it and hang the towels there...and Yes I think that the one bar will "disppear" but I also think it would look funny if the two bars don't match. Sorry not what you want to hear but just my opinion.

I actually kind of like the look of a metal towel bar on a frameless glass door - the door disappears, and the towel bar just seems to be hanging in space.

But that's just me. :-)
