An neat little bathroom heater

In hindsight I wished I'd installed the whisperwarm or in-floor heating....but we didn't and now we are stuck with a beautiful but cold basement bathroom.

Ever since, I've been looking for a small heater that was safe, affordable and didn't require us ripping anything out. All I could find were the little ceramic heaters, which are not supposed to be used in a bathroom and then the next step were the $300+ bathroom wall heaters.

I'd about given up, when I found this neat little heater, quite by accident, at the Bay here in Canada.

It's call the Seabreeze Thermoflo "off the wall" Outlet Mountable Bed/Bathroom Heater.

It was the simplest thing to install. It fits right over the outlet. Although I wouldn't call it "whisper quiet"...(then again neither is my Panasonic whisperfit ventilation fan), it warmed up the room really fast.

I paid $75 for it.

Anyways, I just thought I'd post it here in case someone else was in the same situation.

We could use one of those in the upstairs (attic reno) bathroom--there's just an ugly old baseboard in there now, hardwired.

A question: does it get hot to the touch? Because that's where our daughter will be and I'd love one that doesn't get hot.

Nope it didn't get hot.

My instruction manual also says under safety features:

cool-touch cabinet: The enclosure is made of a tough ,impact resistant polymer and does not conduct heat like metal housings on ordinary heaters.

What you need is a Metlund D'Mand system, you push a button on a transmitter that looks like a doorbell. I have a button in the kitchen and one in the bathroom. When I get the master suite built this spring there will be a third button in there. The system purges the cold water from your lines. In our house I have to wait 35 seconds for the pump to work its magic. Then I turn on the water and within 5 seconds it's full hot and it stays hot for several minutes even if I don't turn it on right away. The Metlund unit is plugged into the wall beside my water heater, I'm not sure of the exact plumbing involved. This system is much cheaper to operate than the standard always-on hot water recirculation system like my grandmother had. I love my Metlund system and no longer have to waste water waiting for the hot. I get hot water right away for the shower, sinks, washer, and dishwasher. It's great. Get a piece of plastic to test on, and spray it with a plastic-compatible spray paint (there are many at HD; i just sprayed my blue plastic rain barrel with hammered bronze paint, it looks great). If it still looks too painted to you or the wrong color, get a little tube of rub 'n buff, which comes in some good metallic tones, and rub on/wipe off color until you get the color/texture you want. When the wax dries, the rub-n-buff won't budge. I used it to adjust the tone of the house letters on my front door to match the antique mail slot, and a year later, the finish is still perfect. So it will stand up to bathroom humidity of it can stand up to a new england nor'easter. I don't recommend rub 'n buff directly onto plastic, but I believe it will adhere well to painted plastic. I prefer having the double sinks, myself. Have you considered not leaving all your stuff out? I hate for everyone to see my cosmetics, toothpaste, hairbush, etc. What I do is have great storage not only in the drawers but in the cupboards below, which are generally awkward. Target has those plastic Sterilite Drawers (which I hate out in the open) which make good storage out of sight under the cabinets. One is just for my hairdryer, wide tooth comb and brush. Another has make up, cotton balls, tooth paste, vitamins, everyday stuff basically. The drawers basically function the same as expensive pull out cupboards for about 7.00 each! The tops of the containers are not perfectly flat, but flat enough to store toilet paper. By keeping the majority of things below the vanity top is tame and functional. HTH.

Do not put heat under the shower floor: 1) Electric mats can develop defects and the presence of water can lead to a shock hazard. If you think this is far-fetched, there is more than one thread in these forums about such problems. 2) Hydronic heat (warm water circulated in tubes) does not present a shock hazard, but it is also of little use in a shower. Radiant heat only makes the floor warm enough to keep the ambient air at a decent room temperature...as soon as you turn on the shower, the initial blast of water overwhelms any contribution of warmth from the floor in a second or two.

My bathroom is 11 x 7.

I've used the heater twice now. I turned it on just before getting in the shower and by the time I was done...oh..15 minutes...no gasping....the room was nice and warm.

The heater has two settings...1500 watts which you feel immediately and a power saver mode of 1000 watts.

From the brochure:

"120F Exit Air Temperature. The exit air temperature is approximately 120F, warm enough to heat an entire room."

The only thing I wish it had was a timer...and that it looked a little more modern....

but heat is always a good thing.

Just discovered the heater we wanted won't fit.

Wondering if you're still happy with this heater, or if anyone else tried it.

Here's another option: an undervanity, toekick heater. I didn't realize that such a thing existed until our electrician said they were pretty neat. We have a very small bathroom on 2 outer walls which limited our supplemental heating options. I kept thinking what good is a bathroom that no one will use in a Wisconsin winter because of it being cold. Our new heater will be controlled by a wall switch.

If anyone is interested, I'll get more info from the electrician and try it out after it's connected. Currently, it's hot with high humidity here.

lkremodel - do you have the name and/or specs on your toekick?

We had planned on using a toekick, but my GC just told me it won't fit under our custom vanity.

If anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

It's a Broan and the front of it is about 18 inches wide. The vanity is standard depth. Unfortunately, I don't have the spec book yet.
