Help! Red Wine stain on maple

I have a beautiful kitchen island of with a hard maple top. I keep it oiled and am careful with anything that may stain. I had guests over the weekend, and someone spilled red wine. I didn't see it until the next morning. I sprinkled with salt and rubbed with lemon (a trick which has worked in the past), and it is persistent. Any ideas? this is a piece which I really love....

Try a clorox bleach pen...carefully! Only on the stain.

Thank you, Linda. I was a little fearful of bleach, and had found an article recommending hydrogen peroxide (3%) and water. I dabbed it carefully, and it took away most of the stain. Then I took the bleach pen as you suggested, and very carefully dabbed it on the remaining stain. Between the two methods--Success! there is a slight lightening of the wood around where the stains were, but I have oiled it, and it seems to be evening out a bit. probably with time...

We had green carpet for 5 years and never spilled any wine on it. Now we just got cream carpet and with our 7 month old golden retriever are on our third wine spill! First I blot (don't rub) as much excess as I can get out. Then I run for the 7up can and drench the area with it, let it set for a couple of minute and then blot again (on really heavy stains I've left the 7up on over night). Then I clean it with regular carpet cleaner and cover the spill with a towel so it doesn't get dirtier from the dog while drying. So far ever spill has come out. Not sure if it will work on dried red wine but it works great on fresh spills.

Any of those woods will be sufficiently sturdy, but it depends more on the construction than the type of wood. They are all hardwoods. If you had a picture or link, that would be helpful. Are you sure they are actually made of these woods, or offered in finishes called "Teak," etc? More importantly, are they finished or unfinished? If you plan to eventually stain to cherry color, you want unfinished wood. If they are finished, I'd suggest you just pick the one you like the best; it doesn't have to match your cabinets if it's a standalone piece. I could see any of them as being compatible with cherry; I'd probably go with either the maple or oak, for color.

ok, I no longer think the stains are from red wine. Yesterday I gave the cabinets a very close inspection and cleaned every spot I found. Last night no one drank any red wine. This morning I found another stain from something settled on the rail of one of the 5 piece drawer fronts. I think it's from the Sparkle glass cleaner that I've been using to clean the granite and quartz counters. The granite fabricator recommended Sparkle to me on the granite because it's ammonia free unlike Windex. And I've been using it with beautiful results. In my other rooms I have quartz and been using up my windex in those rooms. But the kitchen I use the Sparkle. Those of you not familiar with Sparkle it has a purple tint to it. I think some errant sprays are getting on the cabinets and staining as they dry. That is what i suspect...I have not run a test on it as why would I want to add another stain to my cabinet fronts? anyways. I'm going to remove the sparkle for a week or so and see if I continue finding new stains or not.

I hope it worked for you. Back when I had light colored laminate counters and young children that drank grape juice I would squirt a bit of liquid dishwasher detergent on stains. It alway worked for me. That said I don't think the current gels are the same as the old "liquid" type. I don't know. I use powder. Soft Scrub with bleach also worked well.

next time you have a red wine stain clean it with white wine

a vineyard in New York told me this when i spilled red wine on a white shirt

I have Boos Butcher Block. Once a year I shave a little parafin in the oil, heat until melted. Oil as usual. This helps to prevent stains.

i didn't try the white wine yet (thankfully, no more stains) but will remember that. Janice, I used your parafin and oil trick... so far haven't put it to the test, but it certainly made the wood look lovely... brought out an even richer tone than the oil alone. Thank you.
