I know this is an old post, but I thought I'd throw this out here anyway. I recently used 100% cotton, white cloth and napkins and by the end of the meal they were covered in spots (I'm a very sloppy eater!) The stains included quite a bit of red wine. The laundry didn't get done for several days and I thought that they were all "goners". Not so. I sprayed them all with "Spot Shot" and EVERY SINGLE STAIN CAME OUT. I just washed them on a regular cycle with a regular amount of laundry detergent. Incidentally, when we had our carpet cleaned recently the cleaning company couldn't get out some black grease spots from the ladder used during painting. I just said "no problem" and cleaned them all up in a jiffy with Spot Shot. It's billed, I think, as a carpet cleaner but we use it for almost everything around the house. I have no idea what is in it so if I were using very fine linens I would find out a little more about it -effects from long term use on certain materials, etc. but for cotton linens, spotting our clothes, etc. we consider it indispensible. We've found it at various grocery stores but usually buy it in quantities at Sams Club. Here's to more linen-requiring occasions! Amy

Oxiclean...straight from the spray bottle...is the only thing that works with my cat's carpet "contributions"...and she's getting on in years so her "contributions" have grown of late. Unfortunately...you've already applied so many "remedies"...including vinegar which may have set the stain rather than doing what you wanted it to do...that you may need a professional's opinion. If your carpet is 100% nylon...you have a better chance of removing the stain. Nylon doesn't absorb color the way other carpet fibre does. Any other fibre and you may be stuck with the stain now. I think the wine smell will eventually dissapate. Clean up as much as possible and let it dry. I had two jugs of wine for cooking freeze in my car while out shopping and the bottles exploded. Yes, they were glass. The frozen wine could be scrapped up along with most of the glass shards. It was impossible to rinse all of the wine out of the carpet since it was so cold even hot water was freezing on contact. The smell was bad for a while but eventually gone and I did not have to do anything special. Once I had a package of raw meat slide out of the plastic shopping bag and hide under the seat. It was not noticed for about ten days since the car had not been driven anywhere. Ooooph. It was summer. The meat package did not leak but the odor came through and I smelled it for a long time. I sprayed vinegar around the car and lavender water. I don't smell it anymore but it took a long time.

Not that easy to answer, not knowing what type fabric is on your upholstered piece. There should be a code to the fabric, either under it, on a cushion tag, or store receipt.... If its a fabric that will not take a water based product or DIY attempt, the water or product could leave a permanent stain in itself...and I learned that the hard way.
