Hi Chuck, I love my HFGH 10x12, but I think splitting it in two to make a 5x20 lean-to would require a huge amount of rethinking and re-engineering. The roof pitch in the kit is predetermined by angle brackets at the corners, and by a formed angle in the framing piece at the top of the side wall; I don't think you could use that major component if you changed the roof pitch. The framework really doesn't lend itself to cutting the structure in two as far as critical bracing. Not saying it couldn't be done (anything is possible for hard workers!) but personally my husband and I think you'd be better off to consider building your own structure (which would allow you to go wider than 5' if you wanted.) It's nice you will have a solid structure to anchor to. I now know the twinwall polycarbonate panels that come with the HFGH kits will not last more than a few years in my own sunny climate, due to (in my opinion) a lack of UV protection, even though HF continues to advertise otherwise. The panels represent a huge part of the value of the kit, since true UV protected twinwall polycarbonate is expensive, so I now advise folks to take this into consideration, depending on climate, when they consider the kit. Some of the close-up photos in my blog may help you see what I mean about the pre-formed angles in the aluminum framing at the GH corners: Mudhouse blog for 10x12 HFGH Also, here's a link to a helpful site with many links to info about building your own greenhouse: Free plans for building greenhouses and solar spaces I also agree, I'd encourage you to start a new thread to get more opinions from other folks...lots of folks here more knowledgeable than me, and some of these older threads with many slow-to-load pics get skipped by folks who might be very helpful to you. Is your original color espresso? It is hard to get the espresso shade with using a wood other than cherry or a few others. With maple and like woods they do not always take a dark stain well. I think it likely someone tried to fix a blotchy stain with a dark glaze except they used too much. Doing a glaze over a dark stain on maple and like woods is fairly common in order to get the dark stain to look uniform. The cabinets you put in look like espresso with a heavy handed sable glaze. If it were me and really wanted the original I would try to make a deal for cherry in the color of stain you want. Cherry does darken over time though.

I know nothing about this kind of stuff, that's why I like coming to sites like this to get opinions beyond just the one tech guy. I do not have the skills to be changing and diagnosing parts myself. There are just some things I know I'm not good at. I mentioned to the tech that I was puzzled by the system failing, and being low on refrigerant since as part of the Hiller Club they come out and check my units in the spring time and everything checked fine. I understand with a system being as old as mine, certainly something could have failed even between the spring and now.....but I think given that they had just checked it in the spring, maybe that's why he filled up the refrigerant for free. @fsq4cw I did not see the tech measure the current. I left him to do his thing up in the attic. I try not to bother people when they're working, I certainly don't like having people watch me when I'm working....although I insist on going around with Terminix when they do their inspections since they tried to screw me once already! @klem1 how in the world would I know if he's being 100% truthful or not? I've been dealing with Hiller AC and Plumbing because they were one of the few companies I trust around here. The first AC guy I brought out last year when my main system went out tried to sell me on a new system without trying to test or repair anything. Hiller has always been professional, and on-time. Do they tend to try to sell me things and upgrades, yes, but I always assume that's what they're going to try and do anyways. But they always give me options and pricing that will get me by. The tech didn't insist I had to buy a new motor. He didn't insist I had to buy a whole new unit. He gave me the situation, and the pricing, and let me make the ultimate determination. He came across a little dopey, but I don't think he was untruthful.

But then you made it clear you arent in the trades your an accountant gone weekender and maybe youre good at it who knows Well I grew up in construction had both a plumbing and electricians license....So yeah I am pretty damned good at it. but we know thats rare as evidenced here by all the travesties in reno's on these forums Ninety five percent of the posts on these forums are from trades taking advantage of people. Do you even look at the posts? How many times have we seen tile installed terribly? So I am sorry if these particular forums are evidence of anything it is the incompetent nature of the trades. Now I am not saying that this the case, people post here when they have a problem, but I am saying it sure as hell isn't evidence to the contrary. Jumping to defraud folks now Huh? how about selling a home without permitted bathrooms.....defrauding... This is a deflection. I am sure my mom said something about two rights don't make a wrong. Furthermore, can you please show me anywhere I said that bathrooms shouldn't be permitted? I have never made that claim, in fact, I said permitting was pretty easy. Furthermore, there is nothing and I mean absolutely nothing fraudulent about selling a home with unpermitted work done. NOTHING. Now it is fraud if the homeowner doesn't reveal that, but in no way are those things equal. But I may be charging wages for the hours of time I spend driving to procure building materials for you at which I pay taxes at the point of sale and I may get my standard 10% markup on that or I may add it to the job if you choose to purchase and procure all that I have no idea what you are even trying to say here, but I will note that you are prohibited from benefiting from a 10% markup in either a time and materials or a cost plus contract. So are you saying that you are working in a time and materials contract (assumed because you are charging for driving around) and not passing trade discounts on to your customers? Heck I could spend an hour explaining SPF2 KDHT lumber vs KDAT and then have you call me from the lumber yard or show up with abunch of warped lumber. Again, this really has nothing to do with a bathroom remodel. Did I advise people to go buy treated lumber? We are talking fixtures and tile. But its also the first place people come to complain when it goes horribly wrong. See above... Someday when an isurance claim gets declined.. Homeowners insurance can't deny claims for DIY work unless the work was done negligently (which it wouldn't be unless you were intentionally trying to damage your home). Furthermore, where am I advocating for a DIY? I didn't. I advocated for consumers purchasing their fixtures and tile smartly. You are all in a bunch about something I never said. ETA: i know you are a good one at arguing with pros here over the years. No I am not. I am a good one at arguing that people think about the marginal costs of projects. There are times and budgets when pros are necessary and I absolutely defend pros when they are needed or when they are right. Again, I am not arguing for a DIY project nor did I ever. I am advocating making smart consumer buying choices. There is no legitimate reason that a time and materials contractor needs to be the one to purchase fixtures. Consumers should ensure they are buying the right product and there can be a few problems if the contractor isn't given model numbers and relevant information in advance, however, done properly there are significant savings with no cost to contractor.
