Here I am again.........

The little ladies at my church are murmuring about another Mother's Day social.... I'm pretending not to hear, but my little brain is running wide open!

I think this year I will use the theme "Ladies in the Garden"...

wreath made with coiled garden hose for the front door

white table cloths with toppers to coordinate with paper goods

birdhouse centerpieces

paper goods to go with each birdhouse theme (different at each table)

Pattico's bookmarks(from the Crafts and Deco's forum)for party favors

con DGD into reading the book about the meaning of flowers

sprinkle various flower, bird, birdhouse figurines around the tables

a silver epergne on the serving table with a few flowers in the cups and mini bird houses on pegs to stand in the candle sockets......

What do you think???

Will I be able to find music motif paper goods for one table and red and white transferware designed paper goods for another table?????

I'm trying not to write a book here, so ask me questions or give me any suggestions that you might have!

That sounds like such fun and one of my fav themes. I love all your ideas.

Would the budget allow for small pots of herbs as table decor and gifts for each attendee?

Packages of seeds..usually can find them for 10 cents...gardening gloves...
So may things fit in...
The garden hose wreath sounds interesting...I am also picturing little watering cans...I wish you lived near..I have a whole box of green ones I bought for a shower..they looked sweet filled with daisies..
Any flowers in bloom there in May?
Oh I could have a good time with that theme!
Sometimes the paper good end up being very pricey..
Could you sub solid colored that you may be able to get on sale after Val..Easter etc?

I can see lots and lots of little girl shoes. You would start with the white hi-top walker, go through the patent leather Church shoes years, ect. Spray paint all with pastel pink inside and out. Icey glitter bling could be put on top of the paint. These shoes could become your floral holders with floral foam and silk flowers. You may have to mount the shoes on placks of wood to hold floral arrangements. Or each 'pair' of shoes could be positioned in an 'L' shape, attached at the heel, and smaller vases would stand between each shoe. These arrangements could be the little bedding plants from the garden center. The center arrangement could be a large crystal vase, elevated, with Mommy's hi heels also painted pastel pink. You could make these arrangements be door prizes at the end of the occasion. Friends closets also would probably have outgrown shoes to give freely to the occasion. (newbie Susie)

Well Jane, I can top you on the losing weight part...I need to lose over 100 lbs. My hubby and I are both diabetic, my kids are overweight too. We spend too much time sitting around watching TV in the evening and no one exercises at all. The most exercise I get is cutting my neighbor's lawn along with mine although it has been so dry here the grass doesn't grow very fast to even have to worry about cutting it. The last year has been a difficult one for me. A year ago April my DH was laid off from his job which came as a total shock to us. We didn't have health insurance for over 3 months and the cost of our prescriptions killed us. DH was able to get another job but it doesn't pay as much as his last job and we have to pay a portion of our health insurance plus a bigger deductible for prescriptions. I tried to find a job, but I am profoundly deaf and unable to understand well enough to talk on the phone so that really narrows down the job selections. I don't have much confidence either, I mean it's been a LONG time since I had to work, I filled out a LOT of job applications but Michigan's economy sucks and there just isn't a lot of hiring going on. I did get a job at Christmas working nights stocking shelves at Dollar Tree. I was asked to stay on after Christmas but by my working nights nothing was getting accomplished...clothes weren't getting washed, dinner cooked, etc...my family is used to my being home and doing it all. It kills me that my kids have to help us pay bills. I was depressed until January 2007 when I decided that I couldn't change our money situation so I just need to take it one day at a time. My DH does a few air compressor repairs on the side and he gives me some of that money and tells me to spend it on myself to get craft supplies because he knows I enjoy crafting so much. I've tried to sell my crafts but haven't had much luck, people around here just don't have the extra cash to spend on stuff like that. Oh well, eventually things have to get better, right? Barb

You should definitely list your "wants" and "don't wants" out -- including reasons why you think you want them that way. Everything in the "Welcome to the forum" posting is just as useful for a designer as it is for this board. You could show him the ideas so far, but make sure that you both agree as to what are the good/bad points so that he doesn't just copy the 'hated' parts. You've already gotten several layouts or tweaks from this community, I wouldn't worry about gathering any more for the moment. You should ask for: References, references, references. Scope of work. If you are planning on getting multiple bids for the cabinets, then does that mean you only want a layout and are not using the designer to pick materials? Talk about the scope of work, what you are hiring out and what you want to do yourself. A good designer will be knowledgeable on different price levels of materials, and can recommend installers as well. How much running around do you want to do? After a while, I loved having the designer pull a limited number of colors and materials to choose from, it made decision making less overwhelming. It did take some time before I trusted her, but after that I didn't feel the need to re-research every little thing. Get a sample contract, but don't sign it until you have had time to look it over and check references. Make sure you have a clear understanding of costs/billing. (If he's billing at XX per hour, ask if that includes the time to drive out to your place in the country. Ask if that includes phone calls, emails, etc.) An experienced designer probably comes with a list of things they usually cover at a first meeting, so you can start there then add items from above as needed.

I am supposed to be making dinner, Jay..and I am thinking Garden party! Maybe because 2 ft of snow is predicted??

Jay,how about this idea ? Make a 2 or 3 layer cake of your choice. Roll out cookie dough fairly thick and cut into the shape of a watering can and bake. Attach the "watering can" to the top layer of the cake. Set cupcakes at the base of the cake and decorate with pastel frostings to looks like different flowers. Take several thin strands of beading wire ( silver ) and push into the "spout" of the watering can. Add small dots of royal icing to the wire to simulate water droplets. Saw something like this in one of Wilton's books and it was really pretty and "summery" looking.

LG, I have 50 teeny peat pots and some basil seed. I will start them a few weeks early in my sewing room window...
Kathleen, I apologize for highjacking your supper...I owe you one if I can ever entice you to Texas! Since each table will have it's own little theme, I can get by with using all sorts of paper goods. Tuesday Morning often has a good assortment of odd plates and napkins, so I will be checking there often!! Saturday I picked up a package of plates and napkins with birdies and nests on them...how cool is that?!!
OreosMom, that sounds like a cool centerpiece for the desert table....I have to think on that and see what I can figure out!

Hi Jaybird! I LOVE your birdhouse idea. I really like Kathleen's idea about the birds nests and candy eggs, too. I'll keep my eye out for more ideas for you next time I'm in HL.
