Floor tile size in a small powder room

I'm adding a small powder room (3' x 6'3") and am getting the floor ready to be tiled. I was planning on using the 12x12 through-body porcelain tile that is left over from my recent kitchen remodel. But I was just looking at some images this morning and wondering whether large tiles will make the small room seem even smaller?

Should I start looking at smaller format tiles? Or would 12x12 tile look OK?

12x12's would be fine. You might think about turning it diagonally.

We have 12 x 12 white tiles in our small bathroom and it doesn't seem to make it feel any smaller. However, they are on the diagonal.

Patty-2010 -- I'm just now seeing your message about the picture of the red flowers. I believe it is a Pottery Barn framed print, but I myself got it at a yard sale. Don't you love it? And this should interest people who wonder whatever happens to the decor of rooms that people feature on this site -- I've made a few changes to the bath since I first posted. I'll post a photo when I get home later, but I'll tell you that we did change the hanging light, and I changed the picture. I know I said I never would, but we inherited a small chandelier from my sister in law, so we thought we'd go with a different style. Look for the photo later.

Since you have a wall mount sink, most of the floor will be visible. Go with what you love. The 12x24 will look great and will give you the modern look you're going for.

I‘lol comment on the “quality” aspect a little. My previous house had tile throughout the main living areas and it was laid on the diagonal. Initially when we looked at (&bought) the house we too thought it was different/special/unique/whatever. Friends commented on it looking nice. However, it just really sucked. Rugs and furniture placement always looked bad bc it was hard to get them lined up with the angle or exactly perpendicular to it. It quickly became a PIA. It never just blended away as a floor. I know yours is a bathroom but I would still rethink it. It could easily end up looking like you just couldn’t make a straight line. Maybe use a smaller rectangle tile for herringbone or another interesting layout or find some interesting tile and do a stacked or offset pattern. I think you’d find it nicer and less “unique”. Sometimes unique is the equivalent of bless your heart.

I agree I love large format tile but not that tile in that small space . BTW you need a real good tiler to even tihnk about installing that size tile anywhere. IMO the biggest tile you can do would 12 x24 You do know everything has to come out of there before tiling .

A small powder room is what it is - you aren't going to make it feel like a football field no matter what you do! I've seen large tiles in small baths that look great and I've seen really small tiles that look great (we're doing a mosaic in our powder room at the moment) but I don't think they really do anything to make the space feel bigger one way or the other. And even the middle of the road size like subways look good. About the only thing I don't care for are the old 4 x 4's but that's a personal preference and there are probably new ones that could make me change my mind.

Our powder room is about 5x5.5 and has a pattern with 12x12s and 16x16s. Here's how it looks:

Our powder room is not even 6' long. It's a little over 3' in front of the sink and the 12" tiles (IMO) look fine. I think larger tiles have the illusion of opening up the floor space.
