What to do when chair rail tile butts up against knob coverplate?

We are using American Olean tile all around the walls of our master bathroom with a tile chair rail. The tile goes just under 4' high so that it will be below the switch plates. The tile and chair railing will also be continued into our walk-in shower. Above the chair railing, in the shower, we are using 4x4 tile on a diagonal.

BUT, wouldn't you know the chair rail tile in the shower butts up right against a shower knob cover plate? The tile man thinks we should skip the chair rail tile on the wall with the shower plate. My husband thinks it should be trimmed to butt up against the plate.

What is usually done when this situation comes up?
