dishwashers without food grinders - is rinsing required?
Comments (27)"bleaching salts" That's rather loose terminology. The component of dishwasher detergent that can etch glasses is the strong alkaline salt(s) that are there to destroy organic materials, such as fats and oils. This is the same principle as the washing soda (sodium carbonate) used by our ancestors, and the lye (sodium hydroxide) used in some drain uncloggers. Dishwasher detergent also contains components (such as hydrogen peroxide aka "oxygen bleach") that are intended to remove stains and kill bacteria. These are what I would describe as "bleach". Of course, there is considerable overlap in functionality between the two groups, but I think it is misleading to use the word "bleaching salts" in this context. Much better to stick to "strong alkaline salts". This leads us to a solution for the pathological dish rinsers amongst us: add a small amount of vinegar (acetic acid) to your wash to neutralize some of the alkalinity. ("Lemi Shine" is a commercial alternative that uses citric acid.) Here is a link that might be useful: Finish Quantum ingredients....See MoreRinse and Hold or Half Load Option?
Comments (8)I would opt for the half load option over rinse and hold. I had a Bosch from 2007, SHE58. It had the half load option. I used it sometimes, I try to run a full load as much as possible. I reduces water and time, plus you can put dishes anywhere in the machine and was available on most cycles. It gave me good wash results. My current Miele LaPerla 2 has a prerinse that I've never used in the two yrs I've had the dw....See MoreWhere have all the copyeditors gone?
Comments (33)Annpann - You asked whether I had had something published. Yes, as I used to freelance write a column for Entrepreneur magazine's sister website. The column was based on work/life balance which is incredibly ironic as I am such a stress monkey at times. Anyway, that gig lasted a year and then easy come, easy go as the saying goes. Then I have lots of ghost writing floating around, which I wrote, but has someone else's name on it. Grumble. Topics range from engineering to medicine to book reviews to anything in between. And then I have a meeting with an agent at the end of the month to talk about a novel and NF book on sustainable energy I'd like to do. Wish me luck on that! I am rather nervous about it, but we'll see. Back to books: one of the best writing related books I can think of is "Bird by Bird" by Annie Lamott.......See MoreMiele Inspira g2120 dishwasher rinse/drying/end blinking
Comments (23)Steve, when the kitchen remodel was done about 10 years ago, I went with a GE Profile (about $1000) and over the year I had it there was 6-8 service calls due to continual problems. Lowes took it back and went with an Electrolux Wave-Touch at $1200, it had even more problems and after 3 months it went back and ended up with a full credit. Then researched a bit more, looked at Miele and Bosch for several month, and ended up with the Diamante Plus model (about $1400). Had 7 years of no issues, until the solenoid went out last year. The part from Miele was $200, but I was able to use a GE part for $40. Now a year later the circulation pump went and is $700. No way getting around that unless one shows up on eBay at a lower price. Even today, a higher end GE, KitchenAid, LG, Samsung, Bosch can run in the $1200+ range, so might as well go with a Miele....See MoreUser
