how to clean porcelain drip pan spill over on gas range???

My son was cooking up his "beer" last night (Wolf 30 inch gas range) and it boiled over. He moved the pot to the other side and took everything apart and cleaned up when they cooled. BUT it all won't come off the porcelain drip pan (right under the burner).

Any suggestions?? thanks for any help.

Forgot: I did get some of it off with baking soda (my new "best cleaner") but it is really hard work - I needed a break.

I did a search with no luck but I read on another post that there is a spray that will dissolve spills.

Anyone remember what it is?

Try cold Easy Off on it.

The confusion is in the word seasoning in this application. OK it's not a wok or a cast iron pan that needs to be properly seasoned but here's Bluestar's recommendation: This is from the BS web site..."Your ring grates, top grates and burner heads may darken over time with use. This is normal. TIP: To prevent your burners from darkening at an uneven rate, rotate the ring grate and top grates between more and less active burners. BURNER CLEANING Ring Grates and Top Grates TIP: Clean spills as soon as possible to prevent sticking and build up.  When burner is cool, remove the ring grate, top grate and center filler grate (30” models only).  Wash in hot, soapy water. Rinse well and dry thoroughly to prevent rusting.  Handle gently to prevent nicks/chips, which can lead to rusting TIP: If you have a nick or chip you can season the area to prevent rusting. Nicks or chips are not covered under warranty.  Put corn oil or other high smoke point oil on a paper towel and rub onto rusted area.  Wipe away excess oil and replace the part on the range. Do not submerge the burner grates in water for extended periods of time. Prolonged exposure to moisture may cause rusting.  For heavy soiling, use a commercially available oven cleaner. Follow the cleaner manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure the cleaning chemicals do not contact any stainless steel or painted surface on your appliance.  Reinstall grates in cooktop and make sure they are seated properly, and do not move unsteadily from side to side". So, BS says it's OK to hand wash or DW and they also use the word "season" so this is maybe why it's a bit confusing to some. It's not seasoning in the traditional sense but oil on these grates will keep them looking good over the life of the grates, IMHO. Pllog makes a good point. Thank goodness for small mercies - no peeling, no flaking. Funny about that with the previous ovens. Rather surprised about that too as I hadn't heard anything about it. Must say, am a bit mystified by a convection oven whose fan cycles off. Why??? Not to save energy surely since the most energy-light part of the oven would be the fan! I downloaded the manual and saw that bit on page 17 that Rocs pointed out to you. A convection oven that may or may not convect. That's not averaging, I wouldn't say. Anyhow, Monogram has received good reviews and I will say that the forward/backward flow is a not half-bad idea to get good coverage. Not to sound totally condescending, but I just wanted to reiterate a few things that you probably already figured out cooking oh in the course of your life and re: convection anywhere (these are the things that I needed to learn): - pre-heat time. Never mind the beep; let it pre-heat 30-40 mins. - Selecting the correct racks and rack pairs when multi-rack baking. All specify to watch for this esp. with multi-rack cooking. - Air-flow: Take them at their word when they talk whatever their oven needs for clearances and to ensure laminar flow in their ovens. Yours says 1-1.5" clearances on either side from the walls, center the dishes on a rack, stagger them when one on top of the other (mine is v. tolerant about the last in convection mode but the clearances for airflow are definitely imp. I've found) - cooking to dish type: darks, vs. shiny vs. glass. Spills vapourizing to smoke is also surprising. Sounds like the bottom element was on and scorched the spill. I think using your drip try from here on out to help catch spills sounds like the best bet. I don't really know what to say though as it sounds a bit odd. Wouldn't have thought the bottom element could get that hot that it would char spilt pastry. No way that Monogram will come out to check the element to see if it is out of place somewhat? (Its a stretch but that's such an odd happenstance, I'd be dying to see what's under the panels ;-) ). Rhome, you'll figure out the ovens' idiosyncracies no doubt.

Oh geeze, here is my anal retentiveness rearing its ugly head again but here we go again. Hang on... Probably due to the terrible review that Consumer Reports gave Bertazzoni years ago on an older model people are shying away from the new model. Does the new model make up for the sins of the last model? So how about this comparison, The Bertazzoni MAST366GASXT vs. the Fisher & Paykel OR36SCG4X1? Off the top, I can get an extra burner with the Bertazzoni. The Fisher & Paykel offers only 5 burners. The Bertazzoni has better btu numbers, going from 750 btu's to 19,000 btu's. Fisher & Paykel goes from 1,000 btu's to 18,000 btu's. One of Bertazzoni's burners goes down to 750 btu's but the rest of their burners have higher btu's. What if you want to simmer more than one sauce at a time? Fisher & Paykel's burners only go down to 1000 btu's but all of their burners go this low. I am not worried about the btu's at the high end but the low end I am worried about. Are Fisher & Paykel's 1000 btu's low enough for a gentle simmer? The Betazzoni doesn't have a storage drawer. The Fisher & Paykel does. The Betazzoni seems to have a thin rubber door seal which can wear out faster than Fisher & Paykel's more robust woven door seal. Also, on the Bertazzoni, I can easily see sauce spilling into those rear air vents at the back of the oven. Is there a way to clean these vents if this happens? The Fisher & Paykel doesn't have this problem. The Bertazzoni has a 11,000 btu infrared gas broiler. Is it similar to the ceramic infrared broiler in the BlueStar Pro range? Though infrared broilers are preferred, is Bertazzoni's 11,000 btu broiler better than Fisher & Paykel's conventional 13,000 btu gas broiler? I finally found a stat that is the same on both ranges. The baking/roasting power on both ranges have a maximum 17,000 btu's. The difference is that Bertazzoni's oven is always on and kept at a constant temperature. I've never cooked with a range like this before and I wonder how much of an advantage it really is over conventional oven that turn on and off to regulate the temperature. Finally, at least of this writing, Fisher & Paykel is offering an extended 5 year warranty on all of their products, unheard of in the industry. Bertazzoni's warranty is the conventional two years so you will have to purchase an additional warranty for peace of mind. There are other questions I have too but this is a start. The problem with appliance dealers, blogs, and reviews is that no one really seems to be a consumer advocate. Has anyone addressed the issues I brought up here? I think potential customers would like to have answers to these questions.

Hannah, I don't necessarily clean it after each use. It really depends on how messy it's gotten on any given day or week. I might leave it go if I know I'll be using the burners that night or the next day, and can just tackle the cleaning afterward. It was a trial and error thing early on, as to how to clean/what to use on the burner pans so they wouldn't look all smeary. At a Wolf Showroom cooking demo, they had recommended the Perfect Kitchen spray, which worked well. But I'd started mixing up and using my alcohol-water spray on my granite counters, and then tried it on my SS and on the burner pans, and it worked well, so I just started using that. I do clean with a sponge first if it needs it, but if just lightly "soiled" or dusty, I just use the spray. My grates don't look new or pristine, and some of them are pitting (rust spots), but they aren't covered in food residue or anything (I do wipe them occasionally, or as needed, like I said). They just look well used, which for cooking grates, is just fine IMO. I actually have another set or two in my attic (long story), so can always swap them out at some point.

I'd try easy off, too. And tell your son to go buy a turkey fryer. The burner and stand operate off an LP tank and can be used outside. They work fine for typical 5 gallon batches of homebrew and if you get a boilover you can just hose off the mess. Plus, the big burners on turkey fryers will get the pot boiling faster than any stove.

I haven't purchased oven cleaners for years - with the self clean ovens. I didn't kow there was a "cold Easy Off" I'll try it.

It's not Cold Easy Off, it's just plain Easy Off. What Weissman means is just spay it on cold and let it sit for awhile. It will loosen baked-on spills. Try not to breathe the fumes if you can, the stuff is just lye in an aerosol can.

No, that's not what Weissman meant :-). They make a version of Easy Off - called Fume-Free Cold Oven Cleaner. I believe it's somewhat less toxic than regular Easy Off which can also be used cold, as mojavean said.

Sorry, Weissman, and datura. My bad. I looked for "cold easy off" just to be sure that there was no such thing and there isn't. I saw that there was "fume free" but didn't know that that was "cold". Sorry for the confusion.

I have the Viking which is porcelain top and have been unable to also clean well. It is baked on. Mine is from frying chicken and the grease splatter. I will try the easy off. You are sure this will not hurt the porcelain finish?
A lot of the new stoves have the porcelain finish but is not as easy as I thought it would be to clean. When I called Viking they said use the BLUE scotchbrite. I have to go down and buy one. I will also get the cold easy off.

No problem, I'm just very happy that you replied to my post. I learn something new here almost everyday. You did put a smile on my face. I loved the "what Weissman means is ---" and "no, that's not what Weissman meant ----"

I had some easy off downstairs and IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!

I sprayed it outside and put plastic wrap over it.

The stove looks great again. Thanks for the help!!!!!

You can also try Dawn Power Dissolver (a spray on gel). Let it sit for ~ 15 min and then scrub/wipe w/ blue scrub sponge. FYI, don't get it or the Easy-Off on HW floors--they eat through the poly.

I could not find the Dawn Power Dissolver at the grocery store. Not sure where you would get it. I tried the Easy off and it worked. Unfortunatly it looks like the splatter onto my cooktop pitted it. I am not sure if Viking has a poor porcelain finish or all porcelain is that non durable. It seems odd that they would put on a cook top if it cannot take splattered oil. Did you notice any spots on your wolf porcelain finish? Mine also scratchs easy. I spoke with Pacific Sales and she said all rangetops will look like that if you cook on it. I just thought I could keep it new looking for longetr then 3 weeks. I can't imagine what it will look like in 3 months. I would be curious to how the finish on your wolf is holding up. If I knew how I would post the pictures.

I'm going in tomorrow to look for it, faith. I'm sorry to hear about your finish. That's frustrating. No pitting on ours. It's my son's apartment off the house so he's the only one using it. But there are some scratches. Those grates are so heavy, that it is hard to position them over the holes. That's what the scratches are from.

If I were you, I'd go above Pacific Sales and give Viking a call. That really shouldn't happen in three months. I know Wolf is really good in their customer service department. I know someone that works there and he says that if the customer is nice and not demanding, they will do whatever they can to help.

Why don't you do a post about the pitting on Vikings and maybe you can get info from other Viking owners.

I just redid my island. I put in Wolf's 15 inch modules, one induction, a steamer and a multipurpose gas. I like my gas much more than my son's because it is a closed unit. It's stainless and so easy to clean.

Don't put it off, call asap. and keep me posted.
