Here's My Table Now

I finally had some time tonight. I replaced the large square plate with a white one. I added another black placemat, a flowered napkin, put the red napking up in the cup and added some crystals for a little sparkle.

We will be eating BBQ ribs and one can never have enough napkins. Just Kidding!!! I used my crystal hurricane vase I got for Christmas asthe centerpiece on this one.

Very nice. Just a few chances here and there and you have a whole new tablescape. You're learning pretty darn fast! I like the little bags of kisses. I'll be using that idea for a couple of my February tablescapes.

I LOVE! the color combination (maybe a little to much as I am planning red/black & silver for my Christmas tree for this year..lol).
Versatility is a great thing and with just a few changes, you have a whole new look.

Hi, Kim, Welcome to the forum. Many of the experienced growers will give information about AV culture that is aimed at growing the best possible plant you can, using optimal growing medium, pots, fertilizer, lights, etc. There is not usually just one way, so you have to gather the information and pick what works for you. However, a lot of the wheel has been invented, and some 'standard' practices have developed over the years. You certainly want to remove the suckers, for they will distort the shape of the mother plant, which is very pretty, by the way. I find it much easier to do this after knocking the plant out of the pot. I use an x-acto knife on larger suckers, and large tweezers on smaller suckers. If there are no roots on the sucker, I remove enough leaves to give me a stub that I can put into my potting mix to root. I do cover them to increase the humidity. I do not use any rooting hormone. If necessary, I will 'stake' it using toothpicks to support it in position. About pots.....plastic is most frequently used for several reasons. They are cheap, come in an infinite variety of sizes, and they don't absorb fertilizer salts. A general rule of thumb for size is to have the diameter of the pot be 1/3 the diameter of the plant. Try not to get caught up in the idea of having the plant grow into the pot. AVs prefer to be rootbound to bloom their best, so if the pot is too big, they spend all their time trying to fill the pot with roots, instead of blooming. Also, since they are a shallow rooted plant, the use of a 'squatty' pot is better than taller pots. In a worst case scenario, the soil may stay too wet in an oversized pot, and the roots may rot. Clay pots can be tricky. They absorb water and fertilizer salts will build up on the rim, burning any leaves touching the rim. They can be hard to clean. As the water evaporates through the pores of the pot, cooling occurs and can affect the roots. Three ounce solo cups with drainage poked in the bottom work well for small plants, leaves, and suckers, and are used by many commercial AV growers too. A word about potting mix....a sdtandard mix consists of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite, in equal portions. You will see this referred to as a 1-1-1 mix. There is no commercially available mix of these proportions, unless you buy it from an AV vendor such as Cape Cod Violetry. But, if you can find the ingredients, it's very easy to mix yourself. Or, if you have a mix such as Miracle-gro, add perlite and vermiculite to it, treating it as the peat ingredient. If it has fertilizer in it, don't add fertilizer for about 8-10 weeks. The table looks almost identical to mine - made in 1965. My MIL had bought the set new - it's a Thomasville, but the only place it's identified is in one of the drawers of the breakfront. Have you checked there? My chairs and breakfront are different than yours, but the lines of the table and the chair legs are almost exactly like yours. It appears to be the same pecany color as mine, too. I've been looking for a set with chairs in better condition than mine; mine have had a hard life (LOL!), but I haven't seen anything yet in as great a condition as yours. What a great bargain you got!

Nicole, Thanks...I'd been looking for months, in furniture stores, craigslist, everywhere and nothing really wowed me that didn't cost a fortune! Liz, It's a very deep cherry...sorta like brazillian cherry...has sorta a zebra effect dark brown/black hue then the deep red. It's VERY heavy, took 3 of us to move. I think the top has a thin layer of veneer on it though from everything I could find on the FFDM site, but it's in great condition, one tiny bruise less than the size of a dime right near the corner, I touched it up with a furniture marker and now it's not noticeable at all and i'm very picky! Any idea on wall color? i'm sorta a matchy matchy person and this DEF is out of the ordinary for me, I usually lean towards very dark espresso furniture. I love color though.. My kitchen is louisburg green by BM with red accents -Valspar red , (have the color name somewhere) but it's a deep red inside very upper cabs, with glass fronts and lights..the rest of the cabs are white (wanted to make the kitchen very bright since it's gallery style and long!) The kitchen leads right into this dining room, and then into our living room which is a light taupe (prob change in the future so that color isn't important). Any ideas on what will fit with the louisburg green? I'm not a fan of just beige/offwhite, and I do love color in my life, esp greens, blues, greys, etc. (I hate purple hues or anything with a purple hint)

I think you can leave the teal bench, and perhaps get fabric to tie in the teal, brown and black tones. A long cushion on the bench in plain black, with pillows in the print fabric, and then print cushions on the chair seats. Perhaps something like this? rice licorice Here is the other thing I see. What feels off to me is that the table appears to be no where near as wide as the bench, and of course curves in at the oval ends, so it appears that the people sitting on either end of the bench wouldn't be near the table. What you might consider, given that the table is not an heirloom piece, is getting a larger tabletop cut from a nice stain grade plywood. It could be a slightly larger oval or even a rectangle. You could attach it to the current tabletop, or it would likely be fine just resting on the top, since it wouldn't be that much bigger.

I really loved your first table and I love how a few changes really 'Glitzed & Glittered' it up!!

I can't believe you truly just started tablescaping and are turning out these masterpieces!

I think we have the same coffee cups. I will be using mine for hot chocolate. I ran them through the dish washer today thinking about what I had to go with them for a tablescape. Something DS and the GKids will like. :o)

Punk, there are so many things I love about your table...I don't know where to begin! First of all, let me say I think it is simply beautiful.

I love your crystal snowflakes and the big red ribbon around the hurricane. I really like how you arranged the napkins in the glasses. I can never manage to get them to look right when I try it. Way to go!

The stemmed glasses with the ornaments and snowflakes are too cute! You can expect me to copy that idea in a future table! LOL

I like how you layered your setting from the placemats to the tiny bags on top of the dishes.

I think you did a superb job!

Betty, your so sweet and thanks for your comments. My cups are Princess House Heritage design. I have two china cabinets full. One has the fantasia pattern and the other has the Heritage pattern. One of my close GF sold crystal for years. However, I've grown to love my Waterford and Milkasa far more after discovering them.

Dream, thank you so very much for all your sweet comments and I would be honored to have you use any idea you want. I folded the napkins back and forth, full length in the first table setting I post and then slipped the ring off and turned it around and slid it up to hang on the edge of the cup for my other setting. Did this help?

Jane, thanks so much and guess what??? I'm hiring a gal to work at my office tomorrow so maybe I can have a day off here and there to play more this summer. Thanks for the warning, I hadn't been told one will start dreaming about tablescapes.haha I can hardly wait to start going through more of DM and DGM's boxes nest spring. I will be begging the other kids for all of it.

Luvs and Prosperity thanks so much for your sweet comments. I couldn't resist playing with some of my Christmas treasures. I wish I had more time to tweak but am enjoying this tablescaping with what time I have to put into it.

It really cuts into my painting time but plan to try some table settings with some of my trays I've painted soon.

Sorry I'm late posting, just can't seem to get everywhere I want to be. I love your black and white dishes and the settings are super. Crosssing the two placemats is very clever. I think I like the first setting the best, love the napkins in the mugs with the darling napkin rings. I just saw some of those tiny gift bags at DG for 70% off, I better hurry back and pick up a few, thanks for the inspriration.

Bravo, Punk!!!!! Your latest efforts with this table are perfection! The addition of the black placemats really anchors the table and the black & white print napkins were a brilliant idea. The added red bow on your centerpiece and the "bling" add such a festive touch! Love it all . . . BIG congrats!
