Old Ice Skates to Centerpiece

Hi, I don't usually post on this forum. I mostly post to Trash to Treasure, Garden Junk, and Crafts. I posted a picture of a centerpiece that I had made on the Trash to Treasure site to show one way old ice skates could be repurposed. Sunnyca and Jaybird suggested I post a picture on the Holidays forum.

I had a lot of people coming for Christmas and needed a large centerpiece for my table. I painted a pair of old ice skates, put them on a table mirror (both bought at yard sales), and made myself one. I know they are "different", but I have always liked the unusual. LOL

Great pictures! Great job Skyler! And that Reed is as cute as they get! I could never stand up on ice skates, but was fairly good on roller skates. We siblings did a lot of sleding, and even talked our mother into joining us a few times. :-) Our 'hills' were the railroad tracks and the ramps at the grain elevators. I'd say that is a pretty proud grandfather....:-), but I am sure he can not compete with grandmother.

The funny thing is - when I look at the house foundation - how much foundations is exposed between ground and bottom of brick siding - it all looks even to me. There is no way there is a 6" or more difference between the 2 ends of the house. So it still really surprises me that our yard is so unlevel. When it rains, we never notice precipitation draining towards our driveway. Not sure if we are going to try again this year. The whole thing is covered with snow right now. We never took it apart - I just drained it before we got that storm. So to start over we would need to first disassemble what we have. We originally installed it shortly after Thanksgiving. On a relatively nice day. But we didn't lay out the tarp then - I was concerned about potential branches falling. Or neighborhood dogs running through it. And if you get a hole in your tarp, the tarp is useless. And we didn't level it then. Since we weren't sure where the frame would need to be leveled. And we have no means of checking the leveling over the 34 foot span. (And in hindsight, I would have leveled the wrong places!) The manufacturers instructions say to wait until you are filling the rink to lay the tarp, and they say to level it as you fill it. I just never dreamed that our front yard was on such a slope. We own the rink now. In huge letters all over the box there are huge caution signs saying that you cannot return the tarp after you open it. So make sure your yard is level before you open the tarp. And I'm reading it saying Duh, how does someone not know if their yard is level or not. So I guess I'm that huge Duh! My daughter is a skater, so I justified the purchase of this rink by telling myself that I wouldn't have to pay for practice ice time over the winter months. But instead I just bought ice time for January and February. The world is full of good intentions.

I recently retired and my husband and I have gotten back to ice skating. Love it - we do go to adult sessions and one is even free not far from us on a Friday morning. If they do not have recorded music I suggest an mp3 player (example) with a head phone w/ music you can get a good hard skate. It is wonderful exercise and we love the adult sessions. Unfortunately there are not too many of them around compared to 30 years ago when they were all around us and we would go twice a week with so much fun with the huge crowd. Give it a try if you live in the Cleveland/Medina County of Ohio I can let you know where to go. Hope that helps - right now at 65 years of age we look forward to your ice skating sessions and the people. have fun!

LOL When I let Loki out on Sunday afternoon he fell on the ice too, flat on his stomach. I don't know who was more shocked me or the dog. LOL He wouldn't come back in and stayed on the grass out back and waited until he saw me open the door before he would attempt to cross the ice covered patio. My brother decided we were going to make our annual trek to Kingsville to Lakeshore Park to look at the lights. I could barely get off my porch and I was hooting and hollering when I started to lose control. I don't know why he couldn't have waited to go another day but I was unsure about him driving on the slippery roads. Actually the roads in the county weren't bad but the city roads were slippery. I couldn't believe the bozos on Highway 3 who decided to pass more than 3 cars at a time with oncoming traffic in sight when it was so icey out. They are putting everyone else in jeopardy. Our annual thing is we stop for coffee at Timmy's, eat candy canes in the car, he tells us to close our eyes when he drives by the park, get out (had to walk on the grass because the sidewalks were too icey) find Chip and Mrs Pots and as soon as we find them we leave the park then go eat at McD's. All that driving on a slippery road for 5 minutes in the park. LOLOL He said that it is our tradition but he wants to write the organizers a letter and have them separate Mrs Pots and Chip next year so they are harder to find or don't put them in the same spot every year. LOL I got home and Ken was outside cleaning off his truck. I forgot about the ice and walked across my neighbour's lawn until I stepped onto her flagstone along the driveway then I skated across. LOL I thought for sure I was going to go down but I guess I know how to skate too. LOL Dances, You and your DD are invited to stop by my house any time during the holidays for some Christmas cheer. shysue...Love it! Did you hinge blocks of wood to insert the skate blade & also drill a hole & tie down? Your tablescape is gorgeous & looks so festive...love the silver you used in ornies, ribbon, various snowflakes, etc. And how your napkins are folded like "pine trees!" Do you have a written version of instruction for those? TFS & good to see a post from you! I'm usually on GJ, too! But been pestering everyone over here, enjoying & learning so much! Jeanne S.

That's quite a different and unique centerpiece.
I'm sure it made a real hit at your table.
I like the Silver Baubles and the Snowflakes for added
'Bling' and putting them on a mirror...Great Look.

What a wonderful idea for your centerpiece. Great painting and decorating job. I love the chocheted snowflakes. Did you make them yourself? Thanks so much for sharing this with all of us.

I painted two roses on one skate and haven't gotten back to do any more. After seeing this maybe I don't need to paint. I could just decorate them.

That's a really pretty pair of skates, and what a great idea to put them on the mirror along with the little crystal snowflakes. I like your plates and the folded napkin too. Glad you came over to share with us--please come back often. ;o) Luvs

I love repurposing things and you did a excellent job. Glad to see you posting over here, I forget to look at some of the other forums. The mirror table runner really sets them off. And Jeanne is right, how do you fold those napkins?

Welcome to our forum, Shysue . . . I'm glad you came to show us your tablescape! I think it's wonderfully imaginative and very lovely! Painting the holding blocks silver was a super idea and the mirrors add so much to the arrangement. The entire table looks so pretty and festive. I like your out-of-the-box ideas!! Please come more often!

For those who requested the napkin fold, I got the fold from a blog, but I'm sorry, I can't remember which one. I looked for it again, but could not find it. I will try to give you her instructions. She stated that she did not want anyone to use her photos, and I will respect that. So maybe you can figure it out without them.

* Start with the napkin fully open.

* Fold in half and fold again in half. You now have a square.

* Turn the 4-layered open corner toward you. Begin to peel up each of the 4 layers to align with the top point of the napkin. Space each layer about 1 inch apart.

* Now carefully turn the napkin over trying not to disturb your layers.

* Bring the left and right sides together, neatly aligning the top of each panel to form a triangular space at the top of the napkin. The bottom point should be about 1 inch wide.

* Now flip the napkin over from bottom to top.

* Once the napkin has been flipped over, take the top flap and gently peel it up until it forms a neat triangle. It will look sloppy if you allow the triangle to droop. Be careful not to pull the top up too far as this could result in having to start over.

* Repeat this step with each layer, tucking the tip beneath each previous fold. Make sure the bottom portion is perfectly aligned with the backside.

At this point the napkin can be arranged flat on top of a plate, or it can be placed upright by pulling the back panels out slightly or leaning it against something. This fold looks beautiful as is, or a metallic star sticker can be placed at the top of the tree.

I tried the napkin thing and it works! Oh my gosh, it's so great.

I only had a problem with one step. In order to make it clearer because there are no pictures, I think one of the last steps should read:

* Repeat this step with each layer (including the last folded layer), tucking the tip beneath each previous fold. This should make 5 layers. Make sure the bottom portion is perfectly aligned with the backside.

I used an 18-inch by about 19-inch napkin that has been washed several times. Just grabbed what I had. It stood up very nicely. Imagine it would be even better if a little spray starch were used.

Thank you so, so much for going to the trouble of sharing this. One could always put the name of the guest on the sticker star.

I'm off the buy some kelly green napkins.
