I cannot imagine why you could not recess it into an existing wall. What would you lose on? 2 inches of insulation behind a dishwasher (it was an exterior wall)? That seems like a non-issue to me. I cannot see why you would have to bump out left or right since the depth seems to be the issue.

I plan on a meile myself and plan on no more depth issues than any other dishwasher.

Miele dishwashers are not quite as deep as most American brands, requiring a minimum under-cabinet depth of 22-7/16", as opposed to 24" for most American brands.

That being said, in many older houses, kitchen counters weren't always built as deep as the now standard 24" base cabinets used in new construction. Many people living in older houses have still managed to install a dishwasher and retain their existing counters by either putting up with the dishwasher jutting out from the cabinet front, or by making some other alteration. The most common fix has been to carve out some space at the back of the space in which the dishwasher will be located.

Most older houses were built using much heavier timber than is used in modern construction. Typically, the wall studs were rough-cut 2X6 or 2X8 lumber. Since those studs are usually much stronger than is required to support the wall, it's usually possible to carve out an inch or two on a couple of the wall studs to accommodate the depth of a dishwasher. Naturally, before engaging in such a project, it's a good idea to determine the size of the lumber used in constructing your house, and to make sure you know the location of plumbing and electrical wiring inside the wall.

True, the only 24" deep Miele are freestanding (with countertop) models , not available in North America

I'm getting the KA panel ready dishwasher and wanted it to be fully integrated. My KD/Contractor came over today and punched some holes in the wall where it will be to see if he could recess it. He he found no unsurmountable obstacles in the wall. So, if the "coast is clear" it looks like recessing it is doable.

be sure he will recess also some place between DW place and the next cabinet towards the drain/sink syphon, so to route hoses and cord easily. You won't want to have them so trampled to have fill and/or drain issues

Thanks for the tip. I'll be obsessing over this for sure. I'm hoping they know to do this on their own but I will definitely make sure they do. In Florida, leaks can easily turn into a mold problem. A previous leak in our kitchen was the reason we started on this remodel journey in the first place!
