Help! Chip in brand new glass shower door!

The final task of our new bathroom was the installation of the double bypass glass shower door yesterday. Contractor told us not to use it for a day while the silicone dried. Today is the first day we used the shower, and I noticed that the glass is chipped on a lower corner edge! I cannot imagine that this happened after the contractors left! What is my recourse at this point? The door is made by Glasscrafters.

Your shower door is tempered glass. It is damaged and not repairable. Tempered glass breaks into a zillion pieces which are not sharp and your's will break because it has been weakened where the damage occurred. That's the very bad news.

A new piece of glass is necessary. I would be speaking with the installer who should have noticed the defect during installation.

Thank you for your reply. Actually, the wheels are in motion already. Our contractor (who installed the door) called the showroom, who called Glasscrafters. They are fabricating a new door for us.

Are you saying that it is not safe to use in the meantime? The showroom guy said we should just put a piece of tape over it so that we don't accidentally touch it, but that otherwise we can use the shower.

Yes, I was a slave to two bathrooms, and a family of teens, who had no clue what a squeegee was... You will never match the frame size from the previous, buy all new as frames are not interchangeable and the glass cannot be altered.

Our kitchen Reno has been a nightmare. Our cabinets were installed 12 weeks ago and the job still isn’t complete. We are waiting for missing drawer fronts that had to be refinished because of dents and flaws in them that couldn’t be touched up. Many pieces damaged in transport. Peeling veneer on fridge panel already repaired. My issue now is our island. The island looked almost flawless except for quite a few paint bubbles when installed two months ago. Originally, the cabinet maker accidentally had the island pieces painted white to match the rest of our cabinets. It was meant to be Navy. They repainted on top of this (sprayed in factory). Now two months in they are chipping and showing wear. You can see the white paint underneath. We have scarcely been home this summer and have not even really used the kitchen and already it’s chipping. Could this be from the extra paint? I don’t know if they primed under the navy but they certainly didn’t sand the doors down and start from scratch. The paint bubbles also show a spec of white underneath. Has me worried that wherever the bubbles are, it will wear off and be white after cleaning.

All cabinets chip with normal wear and tear. Sharp 90 degree edges will always show that first. Sharp 90 degree edges should be avoided if at all possible. Edges should be slightly rounded over. Painted cabinets show normal chipping far worse than stained. If the project is not finished, touch ups have not yet been done. Those are normal wear spots for chipping to occur. Whether or not that is normal chipping depends on the processes and materials that were used. Site built and finished with house paint? Normal. Conversion varnish? Less normal, but not unheard of with those sharp edges. Learning how to touch these up is in your future as they will need that every so often. This is a teaching that your cabinet maker or installer should provide at the end of the project, along with how to adjust your doors and drawers to account for seasonal movement.

Adults only using the shower? Then the tape should be a good precaution. Don't close the door abruptly though.

I would advise against children using it. They just won't be as careful. The glass is not dangerous in the sense of injury, just that I've seen tempered glass shatter and the clean-up is pretty messy. I'm glad the manufacturer is standing behind their product.

I have seen tempered glass shatter and it DOES cause injury. The glass man who was holding the pane when it broke had cuts all over his legs and my furniture (front of vanity, linen shelf and the walls) was marred considerably. Yes, it breaks into a jillion pieces, but don't kid yourself, it's GLASS. It is sharp and can cause injury.
