OK, Shameless First Thing You Can Already Help Me With (LOL!)

As I mentioned in my other post today, DD is away at college. And, she's in charge of her sorority's upcoming date party/mixer that's scheduled right before Valentines Day. (See, this is great because it's not me decorating, but my daughter, safely away in another state-LOL!).

She doesn't want to go with the usual, romantic Valentines theme because not all the girls will be bringing dates . . . and not all the dates being brought are boyfriends. Some are just close guy friends or maybe just casual guy friends. DD doesn't want to scare them off or make anyone uncomfortable.

So, does anybody have any ideas I can pass along for a Valentines themed party that's fresh, fun, but not drippingly romantic? Maybe an out-of-the-box theme that would appeal to college kids with a Valentines spin to it????

. . . a "Dallas, The TV Show" theme (Bling Meets Cowboy). DD just got back to me and the party may be the week after Valentine's Day.

With a "Dallas" theme, the girls can go pretty, sexy or tongue-in-cheek slutty. They could probably raid their own closets or that of their friends for their outfits.

The guys would only need to wear a pair of blue jeans along with some sort of appropriate shirt. They could bill it as "Cowboy Hats & Boots, Optional". Heck, they all have jeans and, depending on what their date is wearing, they could wear a sports coat or blue jean jacket, too, if they wanted. No need for complicated or expensive costumes . . . which are hard to come by in February anyway (LOL).

So, any ideas for decorations and food, if they go that route? I'm thinking "Bling Meets Cowboy".

Lynn, should be a fun party for DD. What comes to mind is Boots, spurs, chaps, bandanas, wanted posters, straw bales and horseshoes. I think any dishes with a bandana around them would be neat. Or star dishes filled with goodies. You could google and come up with alot of ideas. Also Pinterest is a wonderful source. Here's two picturess I've kept for future parties I'll share with you.

Wouldn't these be cute for cp's? Maybe even put inside
a western boot.

Invitations or posters could read Time to Cowgirl/Cowboy Up and Ride on Over for the "Bling Meets Cowboy" date party/mixer. These are all ideas for after Valentines Day. Let us know what date it will be for sure when DD finds out. You might want to be there to help set up.LOL

Kev843: When you transplant a large, leafed-out blueberry bush like yours, and the soil is knocked off the roots, the plant is placed under great stress. Stress is greatly increased when you do this with an actively growing plant vs. one that is in its dormant period. Pruning back the top growth and removing blossoms and berries reduces this stress. If there is anything you "always" do, it is to use judgment. If you were able to install the rootball intact into the larger container, stress would have been greatly reduced. At this point, I would recommend removing not only the berries and blossoms, but also pruning the plant down, or you might end up with a large, but dead plant. In your SC climate, the days will be rapidly growing warmer, which does not favor your plant. A smaller plant may be a little disappointing, but there is a great advantage to having one that is alive. If, having practiced on blueberry #1, you think you can do a better job with blueberry #2, go ahead and try it. But you know what you have to do: Keep that rootball intact. And prune the plant down and remove blossoms no matter what else you do. It's worth your while to wait one season for your first blueberry crop. Patience is the name of the game in fruitgrowing. It is always easier to transplant blueberries or any other fruiting plant in the dormant season, which in your climate would be the months of January and February. In the dormant season, you can transplant blueberry bushes bareroot, with no soil at all, and they will do just fine. Hi growingup - Not sure what you mean by "tree trimmings (dry plants)" - can you post more specific details? Branches? Wood chips? But keep in mind that just like fresh wood chips from live branches they may be considered "greens" until well aged. A big pile of fresh wood chips is so "green" it can actually catch on fire. If you are talking about dead tree branches - so dry they snap - then I suggest you don't count them too heavily as they are very slow to decompose and so won't interact with your pile in any way like straw or dead leaves will. Just like the saying "the more stuff the merrier", in composting, the more variety the better. :)

that firebox is a Schrader and I bought it from a friend, about 20 years ago..I had another friend put it in and seal it..it's only a metal sheet in the back and sides, so it keeps the fire more contained but wasn't anything that was either already here or even necessary. I don't use it all that much and if the power goes out, with a proper screen, there's plenty enough heat from it...and then there are the generators...plural! lol he works up in the hills, so generators are a foreman's friend. I do believe he has about 5 of them. not much to worry about in the event of power outage. we could accommodate the neighborhood, I do believe..lol I liked the look of it, in the beginning but I'm to the point now, of just wanting the fireplace to be more decoration than function. I"m not so "little house on the prairie" mentality anymore, since I can't be lifting the firewood, like when I burned all the time, when the kids were in school and would come home to a roaring fire. geez, I even used to bake fresh bread, once in a while for them...hot bread, with butter all drizzled over it..., not so now....I just turn up the heat and curl up on the couch...no afternoon noise, or chaos anymore. and the dog has relocated to the end of the block, at my oldest son's place..lol she gets much more attention over there. it's just me and the chirping birds, during the day. (5 love birds and 1 cockatiel)

Ooooh, pretty colors! I may need to head back to SW. Got a call tonight, the couch is arriving with the chair a week from tomorrow. I'm going to continue to investigate all suggested colors and get more chips. Then hopefully once the furniture is here it will be easier to pick! I need to focus on getting a closet system in the living room closet so I can clear some floor space this weekend for the furniture, but I will try to post a few of the suggestions with the suggested color swatches after I get some chips to look at. Hello, Lynn. For a cowboy type theme I think of the same things that Punk mentioned. I don't know any college age kids who have ever heard of 'Dallas'! lol!

For food, I heartily recommend that you make 'Texas Caviar' and serve it with baked "scoops" (scoop-shaped tortilla chips) if you can get them.... regular tortilla chips otherwise. I tried it at a party just before xmas and it was a HUGE hit. The basic recipe makes 8 cups and it's perfect for all special diets because it's gluten-free, vegetarian, low-fat, etc. I just varied an on-line recipe according to what I had and my own tastes -- the basic recipe is very forgiving.

Hi all! Thanks for the suggestions. Party Music, you're right, I don't think today's college kids are familiar with the original version of "Dallas", but they do know and watch the new version which does have (had) the same JR, and Bobby and Sue Ellen but focuses more on their children, now young adults. Same glamour, same drama, same fun. The party direction that they're thinking they want to go is more of the campy bling/glam, big oil baron, former prom queen, Western aspect . . . if that makes sense. But, I'll get back to you as soon as she meets with her committee again.

How about a Diamonds and Denim type theme? That way they could mix in some "bling" and yet have some things more casual. Did you see the burlap tablecloth OA made? Denim cloths would work great and bandana napkins. OA has a really funky cactus I bet she'd send you, right OA? LOL
